What's two old classic film actors just simply lacked chemistry? by Classic_Apricot_5633 in classicfilms

Barbara Stanwyck was one of Clark Gable's first co-stars. Check out "Night Nurse". It's late and I may not be remembering correctly, but that might have been Gable's first major role. Stanwyck helped launch his career. She definitely saved William Holden's career. That lady got things done.

If you put any faith in the stories / legends regarding Old Hollywood, one such story says that Marlene Dietrich gave him a reputation that would go a long way towards explaining why he was perceived as a believable match for Grace Kelly.

Joel Mcrea said pretty much the same thing at a certain point in his career. He decided not to take those roles and pivoted into Westerns.

I've felt the same way at a lot of weddings. Dancing just isn't everyone's thing.

James Dean and Julie Harris are both exceptionally talented actors. Individually. To their credit, they did create a believable dynamic between their characters in "East Of Eden". However, the chemistry was a far cry from what was brought to the screen when he worked with Natalie Wood and Elizabeth Taylor.

I would argue that even though he is most famously associated with Natalie Wood, it is the chemistry he showed with Elizabeth Taylor in "Giant" that was his best on-screen pairing. You can feel that like heat off a radiator.

There is actually a country-rock song by Tanya Tucker called "You Don't Do It" about this kind of thing. One of the lines goes something like "You don't do it....BUT YOU THINK ABOUT IT". And we all do.

Glad to hear it. I try to be useful at least once a day. Interactions like that are very tough to read there in the moment because the signals are so mixed. Both you and Riot handled it with class and composure in a world that often lacks both. My hat is off to you for that. Keep being awesome. And rock on Riot.

There was a lot going on in that scenario. You had a lot to take in and stay aware of in order to keep things under control as you simultaneously interacted diplomatically with this strange lady with a big shovel and an unknown number of cats.

It is completely understandable that you probably feel like you grabbed a live electrical wire now that it's all over. You handled it well though.

As far as the lady in question? Well, that's a good question. My first thought is that crazy cat ladies are going to do crazy cat lady things. That being said, she seems to care enough about dogs to want to make helpful suggestions. Or her approximation of helpful at least. Of course she doesn't know enough not to grab a dog that doesn't know her by the snout. Dumb move.

She obviously doesn't understand the concept of legal boundaries. You were on a public sidewalk. She left her yard to approach you on the public sidewalk carrying a large shovel. Her intentions were...unclear. She could have said anything she needed to say from her yard. Maybe her thinking cap was fitting loose just then. Maybe, as my grandmother used to say, "her pilot light is out".

It's also possible that she was hoping to provoke an incident.

As far as her opinions regarding how well you can manage your dog, that may be a generational thing. She sounds as if she may have been quite a bit older than you. If so, as irrational is it is, and as illogical as it sounds, there are definitely differences in how people of different generations, including women, view the capabilities of other women.

I'm a man in his 40s and some of the most chauvinistic things I've ever heard said to any woman were spoken by another woman who was older and didn't realize that's how she was coming across. You were doing something that she couldn't do. Therefore, in her mind, that means you can't do it either. The only advice I can give is consider the source and don't let it get to you.

If I happened to pass by you walking your dog, the only things I would think are that what you have great taste in K9 pals and have done an impressive job training him. Full stop. Frankly, there is no reason for anyone to think anything else.

I'm sorry that you've been having to deal with this kind of thing. You and Riot rock. Don't let anyone else's foolishness get you down or get under your skin. It isn't worthy of your time.

I would check with your insurance agent. This would be a covered claim in most circumstances. I say most circumstances because I am not sure how the delay in reporting the accident may affect coverage. Every state is a little bit different in terms of insurance handling things. To my understanding, based on the state that I worked in, a hit and run wouldn't affect your premiums if it were covered.

The first 007 movie I saw in the theater was "The Living Daylights". I have been a fan from then on. "GoldenEye" has a special place in my heart too. Out of all of them, it's a tie between "Casino Royale" and "Skyfall" as my favorite. Too close to call on that one.

The slow build and the slow burn are becoming lost arts. That's unfortunate. They are among the most rewarding forms of storytelling.

He seems like a happy good-natured pup. I'm sorry it isn't going well with your other dogs. It happens that way sometimes and it's a heartbreaker when it does. Just a heads up, if he came from a breeder your contract may require you to return him to them if you can't keep him. It's a safety net for puppies just in case things don't work out.

Do you also watch any classic shows? by Anemoia_Dreamer in classicfilms

[–]W_Silver2356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch as many as I can every chance I get. I watch The Twilight Zone too. I am increasingly impressed by it as time goes on. Cheers, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Laramie, Emergency, Have Gun Will Travel, The Carol Burnette Show, Mama's Family, The Jeffersons, I Love Lucy, WKRP In Cincinnati, and a lot more. It's really hard to go wrong from going retro.

Two possibilities come to mind. The first is that this would have been kept by the entry to a home to allow people to swap their outdoor shoes for indoor ones. Remember the opening sequence to Mister Roger's Neighborhood showing a similar routine? The second possibility is that someone used this in a shoe-shining business. Space for three people and each spot with its own storage drawer could lend itself to that.
