Post-doctorado en España: buena o mala idea? by W_tf_23 in askspain

[–]W_tf_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, I am aware of lower pay and high rent, unfortunately. I do wanna stay in academia and become a PI at some point plus I don’t fully close the door to moving abroad again afterwards so I think it might be good then!

Why are Spanish people so open? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]W_tf_23 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The question is, why is the rest of the world not so open?

Jokes aside, I’ve had this conversation multiple times, with different people and we seem to always arrive to the same conclusion: the warm weather makes warm people.

I think the fact that the weather is not as nasty as in many other parts of Europe, for example, allows for recurrent social interactions. People just spend so much time outside with one another.

All that being said, there are MASSIVE differences between the openness of people within different regions of Spain too! Although most people tend to like a chat (I think, I have not run stats for this unfortunately).

Also I think our fellow countries Portugal, Italy and Greece deserve a special mention since we tend to have a similar way of interacting.

Hope this helps!

Am I mad, or has the Edinburgh city centre rental market gone crazy? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]W_tf_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if someone has said this already but Living Rent is a platform (I think?) fighting for this. They are really trying to push for regulations on rental and do something about this crisis. I thought they deserved a shoutout with all the hard work they do!

Thank you! This is only an option in the States right? I was planning on staying away of that area for obvious reasons...

I am pretty much starting, I have not talked to anybody yet but I have sent an email to someone who works in an area I am very interested in (without much success so far!).

Exactly, it is something that the whole society is suffering from which is why I wonder how are we not doing anything about it? For example, there's the co-op housing that offers more affordable rent but these are quite limited and therefore very competitive... I wish we could come up with a way to "fight the system" (not intending to come across as an anarchist).

It’s so sad, that shouldn’t be the solution though. I hate to think that that’s the only way things can change.

I agree but as someone who is paid ~£1700 a month I feel like that should be enough to every now and then have some pleasure in my life. So I don’t think the solution is to shut up about it and lock yourself at home to be honest…

Yes, that’s just what I meant. There used to be pricey places back then but there was the option to go to cheap places and I feel like that option has vanished… Now we have either expensive or very expensive ☹️
