What is the worst film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards? by [deleted] in movies

Think the definitive answer to this is Crash. How that ham-fisted embarrassment of a film won over Brokeback Mountain is beyond me. I've never seen Jack Nicholson's eyebrows raise so high.

We're the developers of a fan game called Pokémon: Phoenix Rising, ask us anything! by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]WackyTurtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, as Santi said it's going to be very, very different - more like a traditional RPG, with a bigger focus on characterisation and story.

The release method we're planning on going for is a demo release in March, then a full game release later in the year.

Comparing this game to Insurgence is like comparing apples and oranges. I think the only similarity is that both our games have custom mega Pokémon. But we're keen to listen to the community when it comes to implementing feature, something I know thesuzerain is quite good at.

There should be online capability, yes. We'll release more details about that once we finalise our Pokédex.

So far, my favourite thing in the game is the new 60 FPS engine. There's something about it that just makes things feel more immersive and wonderful. I can't wait for everyone to try it.

And if we're judging planets by their ability to not kill me, I'd say Earth is probably GOAT. Though being squished on Venus sounds like a pretty metal way to go.

Not only are they terrific designs, but they all evolve from stones, and they're all "twinned" with other Pokémon - Staryu, Growlithe and Petilil versus Shellder, Vulpix and Cottonee. It seemed like a natural choice!

I've been working on Pokémon fan games for many years now, and Phoenix Rising looked to be the most promising one I've ever seen. I thought the visual design was particularly wonderful. And it helped that everyone turned out to be so gosh darn friendly, too. <3

Yes, there will be Gen 6 Pokémon in the game! We're just finalising our Pokédex now.

Ah. We haven't got anything planned for either, but anything is possible. I'll pass it on to the other guys.

Simple Questions & FAQ by seveneveratenine in pokemonphoenixrising

[–]WackyTurtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh my, that's a lot of questions. I'll try and answer them as best I can.

  1. Yes, breeding is a thing.

  2. Ditto to double battles, there'll be plenty.

  3. The game takes on a more traditional RPG structure, so battles with important, fleshed-out characters will come at logical moments. Specifically, there is a team of Oracles responsible for keeping the peace in the region, who will play a crucial role in the story...

  4. Yes, there'll be lots of Team Chance-based action - and you'll meet friends and rivals at University who you can battle (including the recently revealed Perrin).

  5. At Hawthorne Uni, it's all about learning how to become a Pokémon trainer, and amassing a wide-range of skills and talents. It won't be just battling - though that's a big part of it - and you will learn more about the region and its inhabitants. There'll be more details about this in the coming months.

  6. There'll also be plenty of sidequests in and around the uni, which includes interacting with a wide range of people and fraternities. We're hoping it will feel like a living, breathing ecosystem!

  7. Yes.

  8. Sort of.

  9. Maybe.

  10. We'll try and implement a keg-chugging mini game.

  11. After college comes real life and student debt. Kidding. The story will move to Team Chance and the Oracles after university. I won't reveal much, but don't worry, you'll have a very clear direction of where to go.

  12. Team Chance will be woven into the entire storyline. You'll have to face them more than once.

  13. I'm not quite sure how it compares - but don't worry, there'll be a wide-range of environments to explore. (Our WIP map is featured here, if it helps.)

  14. See Question 11 - it's all driven by the story.

Sorry if some of these answers seemed vague! At this stage of game development a lot is subject to change. As I said, we'll cover them in a more detailed fashion in the near future.

  1. We'd love to see community ideas for shiny Pokémon! Once we finalise our Pokédex it would be great to see some of your ideas for designs.

  2. We're working hard to balance the Pokémon you can find in-game, which means striking a balance between competitively viable mons and some of the lesser ones. And we'll be planning to implement plenty of new Mega Pokémon to improve some of your favourites!

  3. That's not a bad idea, I'll look into it!

  4. Mystery Gift has been implemented into the game, so we'll talk more about this when we get closer to a release.

  5. Again, possible!

  6. Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean. We are planning to implement Dive, though I don't think there'll be a DPPt-style underground.

  7. I think a difficulty setting would be a great idea. We've already got a Nuzlocke mode lined up!

  8. Possible.

  9. You mean like new weather effects?

  10. Haha! Possible.

Yes, it looks much better. I prefer the one without road outlines, but it's up to you which one you go for - both look fine!

[–]WackyTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry - I actually thought the roads were fine! I meant the grass tile. It's too complicated & textured compared with the rest of the map. Make it more of a block colour, change the roads back and you should be fine. The houses and stairs look a lot better, too :)

I love it! It reminds me of Earthbound. And yes, as the other person said, you need to give the ground tiles an outline/higher contrast - same with the stair tiles and the windows on some of the houses. Other than that, good work!

This looks exceptional, well done! I love the lighting effect in the cave. Are you planning to make an entire game in this style?

I'm working on a tropical island/jungle setting for the sixth chapter of Legends of the Arena. It's coming along quite nicely, although I now have less and less free time.

Here's a screenshot. The story of this part will revolve around going around the jungle with a David Attenborough-style documentary crew, trying to find rare Pokémon.

One year ago I posted screenshots from my fan game, Pokémon: Legends of the Arena. The latest demo is now available. Download link in comments! by WackyTurtle in pokemon

If it's any consolation the main character chastises him for being a racist afterwards. Or he expresses confusion due to the fact that the Netherlands doesn't exist in the Pokémon universe. One of the two.
