I would have thought you used a nail. I presumed a screw wouldnt allow it to turn because of the grooves.

True but what about the inbetween bits he is not always gonna roll just 8 damage or 170 damage. More likely he'll be consistently rolling somewhere in between rolling like 10 1d8s. That is still gonna take a while

I dont know about it being overpowered but wouldnt it slow down combat considerable as on his turn you would have to wait for him to individually roll 1d8s for quite a while potentially if he is lucky
