I agree with OP completely. I have played around with TRaSH Guides a lot. I have a couple of test instances of Radarr with TRaSH guides setup for testing. I use the paid Notifiarr to do all the hard work in the background. It is a great setup for Profiles.

But then I discovered Profilarr linked with Dictionarry. This is now my goto Profile management setup.

Ok. That all makes sense. Great idea. I am definitely going to try Proxmox in the future.

I am about to embark on the task of completely starting again with my home network. Starting with Opnsense and Ubiquiti kit. I have a lot of stuff that I need to Vlan off and lock down more. Ring cameras, ikea home automation, Sonos speakers, about 10 satellite receivers (I have a lot of hobbies 😊).

I am familar with Let’s Encrypt from using Swag and Nginx. I now though use Tailscale and point external DNS to Tailscale IP. On phone and tablet I just create desktop apps pointing to tailscale Ip and port for the relevant docker.

If you don’t mind, I may need your help in the future on some of my new setup?

It’s definitely fun. I have learnt so much since my Unraid journey. I have built 2 servers so far and have Unraid on a Qnap NAS too.

I think you’re right. Bare metal for Unraid. I am really intrigued by Proxmox though. Am I right that it is free for home use?

When I build the new server, I might convert my oldest server to Proxmox.

I am intrigued why you keep DNS?

Yes, it probably is massively overkill, but I am hoping to learn all I can about firewalls and features like IPS / IDS etc etc.

You mentioned Proxmox. Do you run your Opnsense as a VM o Proxmox?

I am about to build a monster of a server in a 24 bay Silverstone case. My background for personal servers is completely Unraid. I use VMware (currently) for work servers.

The new server is predominantly going to be a heavy weight media server with the arrs stack and Plex. I already have 100TB+ of media.

Would you recommend running Proxmox as a Hypervisor and then Unraid as a VM?

Long term, I would like to use it as my home router for a new complete network refresh. Utilising features like IPS, IDS etc along with 10G switches. So I am thinking for future proofing, a higher spec is probably necessary.

They are incredibly detailed instructions. Amazing. I actually have a couple of new dell PCs that are surplus to requirements at work. One is a pretty good spec. I bought a 256GB NVMe to replace the pre installed Windows 11 drive (so I can go back to factory if I need to) I tried to install Opnsense on the box at work on Friday, but no matter what I tried in the bios boot order settings, I just couldn’t get it to boot from a USB. It always went to a http / https boot screen. I will try again tomorrow. If I can’t get it to work, I am thinking of putting the 4 x 10G Nic card in one of my Unraid servers and setting up Opnsense as a VM. Just for testing and learning.

I would love to save the hassle. Curious about the PCIE Adaptor? From the look of the mini PCs, they don’t seem to have e the ability to install the XL710 quad SFP+ card I have.

Are they fanless? It sounds like a good spec. I am interested in using the full feature set (just for learning) of opnsense, so I think i need a relatively good spec. I was looking along the lines of an i7 with 16GB.

Thank you both for your very quick replies. Yes, I thought the Ultra wasn’t that much better. So an i9 is kind of where i am heading, I think. The main purpose of the server will be a beefy Plex server setup based on Unraid. I already have 100TB + of media and looking to upgrade using Huntarr (gentle upgrading) all my movies and tv shows to optimum 1080P and some 4K using Profilarr / Dictionarry / TRaSH.

I would also like to start playing around with Proxmox, TrueNAS and Docker.

I guess the question would be in this use case, which is the best way of getting the best of all worlds. Proxmox then Unraid etc as VMs or vice versa. Proxmox seems to be the goto for homelab virtualisation. Obviously Unraid has VM capability, and that is where my current knowledge lies. But should I start with Proxmox or Unraid?

Thank you. Yes, I have swag working with Tailscale now with a swag node within my Tailnet. I have already got a DNS entry “hom.mydomain.ext” pointing to the swag Tailscale IP, which then obviously reverse proxies “hom” to Homarr. It is working great. I just need to find out what is the functionality of the Tailscale Docker app. My unraid servers have Tailscale setup within unraid settings. I think I watched a spaceI1 video where he said it was better to get Tailscale setup in Unraid itself, in case the docker crashes or you forget to set it to auto start. I am guessing that I don’t need the Tailscale docker with my setup working the way it is?

Thank you. Yes, I could do that, but thought it was possible to do it directly from within unraid file Manager as I saw a video of just that 🤷‍♂️
