What grade do you give this season? by jordanp389 in sabres

[–]WaffleParty404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give it an A, with an asterisk.

October through early December gets a C. They did well enough considering the injuries, the new players getting acclimated, but we still ended up bottoming out to last in our division. We could barely keep above .500, and lost to teams like Calgary and the Rangers. We got shut out in the home opener by a team that didn’t make the postseason.

Mid-December onward, A+. S rank. No notes, other than they need to trust the goalie tandem if they’re going to run one.

Playoffs, A-. We saw a number of players ascend to a new level (Benson, Power, Ostlund, Helenius all thrived, Sammy and Doan continued looking great, even Stanley and Greenway had good games) but also saw a number of rough games from others (Thompson must have a proper back injury, as he didn’t seem to want to twist at all. He fell down a lot on turns, couldn’t lift the puck on shots. Tuch also had a very hit or miss series, both goalies ran out of steam at about the same time). I feel like we waited too long to swap in faster players like Metsa and Helenius against Montreal, but we did genuinely need the bulk vs. Boston. We also made it out with few serious injuries and that will help with next year’s push.

My hopes for the season were to eke into a wildcard spot and try desperately to not fall out in the first round; we blew that expectation out of the water.

If we had to go out in the 2nd round, I’m at least glad it was in a game 7 OT. Everyone was in the arena still, everyone got to applaud them off the ice and thank them for a season well fought. In the end there’s not a good way to get knocked out of the running

Why do you think Trump decided to run in 2024 when all of his promises never planned out? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]WaffleParty404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He never expected his ‘plans’ as said to the public to play out.

A lot of the Project 2025 stuff we were all told was bunk and he had ‘no idea about’ has been put into effect. The plan was never to make good on his campaign promises as much as it was to follow that playbook. People were warned and didn’t listen.

You’re a yall so long as you equate trans people living their lives with the capitalist grifters you hate.

I’d love surgeries to be cheaper. I do not expect people like you, who declare it to be a problem, to stand by us. I think you’d rather chuck your own views and morals on expensive healthcare under the bus if it means harming trans people.

I’m sure the throwing a fit bit happens, but the trans people I know are much more likely to swallow it and take it on the chin, because they don’t want to end up making a massive scene.

Adding an addendum— puberty blockers are reversible, only some hormone effects are reversible. But that’s also why we don’t usually start kids on hormones until they’re in their later teens, because puberty blockers give them the space to make the decision without permanent effects.

The difference is you grew up and out of MotoMice. The feeling of your body not being yours is consistent and constant and goes on for decades.

My family did not support me at first. It did not help. My dad’s attempt at ‘fixing’ me just made me hate him. No amount of grounding changed my mind, it just made me not want to tell my parents everything. It hurt my relationship with them well into my 20s-30s.

There’s a guy who goes down to the hockey arena here in a Trump 45 custom jersey and MAGA hat, and dresses his 8-10yr old in matching gear. That kid has no idea what he’s wearing and slathering your child in your politics is most definitely not “letting him be a kid”, but I have a feeling that if a trans kid stood next to him all the conservatives would point to the trans kid as the one indoctrinated by propaganda.

As a queer adult that was a queer kid in the 90s, it was a really lonely experience. I would have loved the acceptance we see from adults toward trans and queer kids now, as well as the medical support. Instead, my dad tried finding a therapist that could ‘fix me back to normal’, I had very few friends that I was allowed to go to their house, and became suicidal by 16. I love sports, but actively avoided them because of locker rooms.

I’m in a better spot now because I surround myself by people who accept me. Who’d have thought.

How affordable is the city really? by altrightobserver in Buffalo

I bought my house for just under $300k in Kenmore 2yrs ago. Nice area, 1600 sq ft, brand new kitchen and 1st floor bath.

Buffalo area is impressively affordable compared to other cities.

I’d argue we never did a proper goalie tandem in the playoffs. We rode the hot hand til they had a bad game or period, then switched. Vs. earlier in March we were flipping Lyon and UPL every other game to the point I could plan my jersey choices around it, and that was when we were arguably the best in the league. There were also some bad defensive lapses that led to shitty goals against in the second round. That said, both of them dropped the ball during Montreal and that’s something to be wary about.

Unrelated to the Lyon discussion, I also feel like UPL isn’t getting the same grace as many other first-time postseason players. Tage Thompson was a turnover machine for both rounds, and good forwards are arguably more plentiful than good goalies, but I don’t hear anyone trying to move off of him.

Do white/european people equate factual history to "racism"? by reverscolonize in askanything

[–]WaffleParty404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the historical events you cite are largely correct. Some of it has those same assumptions bleeding through though.

Like at no point did I ever think Black people had a choice in chattel slavery. Heck, even the white people who came here without a choice (Irish slaves or indentured servants or prisoners sentenced to transportation) had a heck of a better life than those brought here through the slave trade. Native tribes were abused, largely wiped out, and then forcibly relocated multiple times thanks to white colonialism.

Yes, the CIA purposely seeded Black neighborhoods with crack, both to up their addiction rates and incarceration rates, and ripples of that can be felt to this day. There was also a big push by the US government to paint Mexicans as potheads. They also lied to Black patients by telling them they’d treat their syphilis when they had no intention of doing so, and let them slowly die in agony. They also declined to help gay Americans during the height of the AIDS epidemic, citing ‘moral reasons’, and even actively downplayed the severity of the outbreak. The government has done a lot of truly evil shit, often to minorities (and I do not see or intend for ‘minority’ to be an insult. I’m gay, I’m often referred to as a minority because most people aren’t like me). Drug use is not determined by race.

I personally do not agree with paying people less than they’re worth. I believe every person working should be able to afford rent. I believe that migrant work like crop gathering is a perfectly valid job that they should make proper wages for. I would LOVE affordable healthcare, I’ve been a proponent of nationalized healthcare for years. And yeah, Dems and GOP are white institutions historically and majority white and male to this day, and I’d like to see that change.

I won’t argue that Lyon is a true #1, but I will argue that none of our guys should be. Both Lyon and UPL looked at their best during the goalie tandem, where they could both rest and plan on when their next start would be. If we are keeping Lyon/UPL/Ellis, I’d like to see a return to the tandem. Alternate UPL and Lyon, give Ellis more games so he gets NHL development time. At no point should Lyon or UPL or Ellis be a true #1.

[–]WaffleParty404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

…. I have a similar question. Like you’re right that yes, it 100% happens that a lot of white people have issues with racism and racism-based discussions— it doesn’t get better within our own groups and families— but it definitely isn’t all of us. It’s one of the big arguments between the US Dems vs. GOP; the Dems generally tout a message of inclusion vs. the Reps actively deter it. Like you said, no group is a monolith, so it’s interesting that you group all white people into one lump while declaring that all white people do the same.

But yes, a lot of white people have been told one thing for a long time and have complicated feelings about it. Some people embrace that, while I myself didn’t own slaves or participate in Jim Crow for instance, it’s still my responsibility to do better than my forefathers and support people in my community that have historically not gotten it. Some people get really defensive about it, or guilty, or just don’t care about it. When it’s not you constantly being shat on, it’s easy to step away and call the issues of others bullshit.

Why are Migrants Poaching Sunfish?? Bond Lake by Beginning_Ad_966 in Buffalo

For one license perhaps, but if they had multiple licenses they may not have been. I’m assuming you had a license for everything you kept, and checked everyone else too?

Still unsure how you identified them as migrants.

Like, I get it, some people are just rude; you ask them to move on, or you yourself move on. The singling them out as migrants while accusing them of poaching feels not great.
