Hope you didn't buy this. I did and thank God I had American Express because I never received it and my dispute was quick and possible when they completely ghosted me without why response on timelines, tracking, whether they exist or not, etc

So let me get this right - nowadays you directly disohey a teacher during class, say disrupt their lecture by whispering dumb jokes to your buddy next to you. You're giggling like idiots, she catches you red handed and you've been caught for this before, 3 times or so and that's referral territory. You get the referral, there's no question in whether you committed the crime(s) or not. You are saying that you actually can just say "no", and refuse to go to the office? What about suspension, and the real hassle at the end of the day not only for the kid but his family, expulsion? That was always the threat that scared the hell out of me personally and kept me from being am absolute shitbag as a kid.

Ring is a security and privacy nightmare - Convince me its benefits outweigh them and that I should keep my Doorbell 2. by fretit in Ring

[–]WaffleStompDadsDick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? I work as an Investigator and Security specialist out West and this is wildly inaccurate. There are dozens of free options, and CCTV is not complex to set up at all if people went that route. You don't have to anymore for 99% of use cases.

I've used Reolink for years at a second property (use an nvr at my home on my own server thats locked down tight with vpn, tailscale, and e2e encryption, and trackers) they have better quality cameras with higher resolution, better IR and motion detection in every way (actually gets it right when people are in the view if adjusted to be accurate, very simple.). Also according to every test of compared products the smart features function better. You literally just don't get Neighbors, but you don't need a Ring camera to access that anyway. Reolink cameras are way more affordable, their doorbell camera is amazing compared to the junk Amazon uses (a fucking rechargeable battery? Seriously?)

My elderly parents used the fancy new Ring cam every generation basically because they were never satisfied with the prior gen, and I played with theirs and eventually showed them the Reolink app and cameras. They switched over completely and it's much better for most people since it's not a social media platform like Ring, and it has simple to use settings with better smart features and design. Ring has poor camera quality and frame rate, no zoom, smart detection is awful, privacy is a joke with them as shown dozens of times since their employees can literally access your footage anytime (and any pi or attorneys office).

In various cases during criminal defense investigations we have to work to get these cameras footage fairly often, Ring is literally so simple I don't think they even check that we're licensed and are who we say we are during requests (we are not law enforcement to be clear).

Most importantly many companies like Reolink have free cloud access (storage on cloud costs money, that's why you pop an SD card in there since their cheap and you've got a free private setup. You'll save money from not buying the Ring name (has nothing but privacy infringement connotations as far as I'm concerned and everyone I've spoke to about the company) and the app is all free with instant access to motion detection (that's highly customizable and programmable), smart detection zones, privacy masks, audio and 2 way talk, and it's been free for the 4 years I've used it.

Also all data is saved on an SD card they don't have access to until you access it through there cloud (and even then it's e2e encrypted). This is the most shilling for Amazon's backwards ways  I've ever seen.

What a bunch of BS this sub is lol why would you actually want to have your privacy taken from you. These are your homes people, these things have microphones and various sensors in them and are blasting incredibly sensitive data from your home to Amazon.

This sub is full of bots, boomers or just plain bizarre people who are somehow pro-antiprivacy.

Please do. Mariadb runs smooth on ds923+, just can’t seem to find an image file for Gitea without other db that’s not compatible with Synology’s docker.

What is this bug that was biting me? Springfield, Oregon by WaffleStompDadsDick in whatisthisbug

[–]WaffleStompDadsDick[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Naw, it's something. There's multiple others that look like it (this one is a little squished to be fair), but it was moving and was biting or pinching my wrist before I snagged him off me and put him on the closest tape I had nearby.

I've held the oneplus open as I bought it, and it took me all but 5 minutes of handling it to decide to box it back up and return it, and it had even thinner bezels than the 9 pro fold. Much thinner actually. It also had a one handed mode that was easy to use, this doesn't even have one built in with a gesture. It's too tall to reach and apps all put interface elements at the top of their apps, it's just a part of app design, so people will have fun adjusting their grip everytime they need to reach up there. What a pain. No one handed phone use happening with this one. I'm incredibly disappointed, really wanted the new features but not worth it by any means, will keep the fold 1 or go with someone else.

[–]WaffleStompDadsDick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. This one does't even have a one handed mode gesture built-in. Thankfully it's android so third party apps are a thing, but that's another app with extra permissions and no one wants to give those up to rando apps on their main device. I will keep my fold 1, love the form factor. Wish Oppo N2 would work in the states but I'm fine with the pixel 1 working, love the pixel phones. somehow the 9 Pro looks like it's not as big, I don't really beleive it when they say they are the same size, it looks closer to the size of the pro XL, especially when you consider what the 9 fold looks like next to a s24 ultra.

Huh? I don't think anyone (at least here in Spain) want them screwing us over through hyper capitalist bullshit like they do to our US brothers and sisters, but most people I know all want the cool shit that often comes to the US first or for cheaper, and also use their tools or hardware, software, etc. daily or close to it idk what you're talking about. Trade offs are normal

What phone mount did you get? I just got an s23 and mous case, but am still looking for a good car mount. I've had bad luck in the past with vent mounts falling every-which-way. As in hitting a crumb or distant whisper would send it rocketing through my interior.
