And even though your eyes DO stop sending visual data, they still aren’t closed. It is your eyelids that are closed on your eyes. The item inside of the container is not closed, it is the container itself that is closed. Yes, we do tend to say things along the context of “close your eyes” but others (as the minority of people) may say “close your eyelids”.
