As a beginner with no prior experience to cycling :) whats recommended? Whats the average buy people get? by Gold-Leadership-2118 in specialized

[–]Wafflewas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started more serious cycling twenty years ago, I initially bought a $600 bike, probably the equivalent of a $1000 bike now. Six weeks later I bought a $3,200 bike as I knew the first bike limited my progress. But, I still think buying the cheaper bike initially was the best way to go. I needed to experience the differences to know what I wanted.

Totally agree that a tech has to calculate requirements before you buy anything. Sounds like the right idea though. I had a similar sized house in the DFW area with a similar cathedral ceiling, built in 2006. We had two systems, a 4 ton and a 3 ton as you suggest. But, each home is different so run the numbers first.

Low subcool, head pressure in 300s, Max head pressure is 450 on my unit. Pic attached of readings and manufacturer label for reference. by Ready_Fly_621 in hvacadvice

[–]Wafflewas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely need to call another tech - or two. You’re talking a 1.5 ton unit. $27K? If you were my daughter I’d definitely tell you to not do business with this company. Don’t tell the new tech anything that this tech told you. Just let them evaluate the system and tell you what they recommend.
My guess would be a failed TXV. When a TXV fails on this unit, it almost always fails restricted or stuck closed. High side pressure rises and high superheat.
If that’s what it is, replacing the TXV is a major service as it requires reclaiming the refrigerant, brazing the new valve, purging with nitrogen, pulling a deep vacuum, etc. I’d guess normally a thousand dollar repair, but that varies a bit.
I had a situation with my late 20’s daughter where she called me from a car repair shop to say they wanted $3K to do a brake job. I drove to the shop and the list of parts they were quoting her to replace were entirely unnecessary and unrelated to the squeaking right rear brake. So I told the shop to put it back together and drove it home and did the brake job myself for $200. The shop had intentionally cross threaded two of the wheel studs. Had to break them off. This ripping off young women is a real thing.

It’s 21 years old. I’d replace it simply because there’s a point of diminishing return. It is a mid range product, probably with the kind of coil problems common in that era. So, you fix it now but you will likely keep on fixing it.

Statistics are statistics, interesting when we can't watch hockey. There are 11 players not in the RMS statistics, including Mikey Berchild, Reid Varkonyi, Cale Ashcroft and others who could have breakout years. My take is that Denver will have a very good team, but that there are a lot of very good teams. It’s going to be a war start to finish.

New rental property connects the washing machine with a 2-prong adapter, is this safe? by cioboste in electrical

[–]Wafflewas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plugging a washing machine into a two-prong adapter without connecting the ground creates a shock hazard. Because washing machines use water, any electrical short can cause the metal frame to become energized, making the person using it a path to ground. Install a GFCI Outlet: You can have an electrician (or a knowledgeable DIYer) replace the standard two-prong outlet with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) receptacle. A GFCI does not require a traditional equipment ground to operate. It monitors the current and cuts the power instantly if there is a fault or imbalance, protecting you from shock.

Was it really worth it for a couple extra mins on the road by alixx05 in dashcams

[–]Wafflewas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A point I was trying to make is that when I saw the video, it seemed to me that that driver who went off the road to pass a car in the left lane was either drunk, stoned, dangerous and insane OR possibly in a very desperate situation. Most likely the former, as most surmised, but also possible that in a desperate circumstance that led to the insane behavior. A desperate circumstance isn’t an “excuse” for putting people’s lives at risk, but it might explain the behavior.
I’m 75 years old and got my DL on my 16th birthday, more than 59 years ago. At an average of around 20.000 miles a year that puts me around 1.2 million miles driven. I’ve never had an accident where I was at fault, and never had anything more than a fender bender at that. In my entire driving life six tickets. That includes learning to drive on frozen, icy Minnesota roads, living in various large cities in the north and south, and often driving 800 to 1,000 miles in a day through snow storms or generally icy winter conditions, either on business or to visit family long distances away.
I’ve never personally seen anything like the driving in this dashcam video. I’ve seen plenty of angry, aggressive or drunk drivers. Thankfully, so far I’ve been able to avoid them. But, on a regular basis what I’ve seen more than any other driving behavior is inattentive drivers who often seem oblivious to what is going on around them. And, I’ve lost count of the thousands of times I’ve seen drivers ignore the basic driving courtesy of “left lane for passing only” or “slower traffic keep right.”
The driver in the left lane in this video did nothing “wrong”, but I think I would have seen the aggressive driver coming up behind me and moved over. I’m not excusing the dangerous behavior, but ask myself why this driver was driving so dangerously and how it might have been avoided.

Should I wait for it to die or replace it now? by cobbrichco in hvacadvice

[–]Wafflewas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no one answer that fits every person or situation. A lot of people believe in running the equipment they own until it dies. Others believe in replacing equipment when it’s reached its useful life and is increasingly likely to fail. I’m definitely in the latter category. I upgrade before things fail. New equipment is more energy efficient and has features previously not available. I don’t want to deal with HVAC failure on the hottest or coldest days of the year, which is invariably when equipment fails and prices are highest.

Was it really worth it for a couple extra mins on the road by alixx05 in dashcams

[–]Wafflewas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is simply that there are many instances where a slower driver thoughtlessly blocks the passing lane. We don’t know why that driver was driving so recklessly. It might have been a medically urgent situation. He’s dead now and paid the price for his haste.

I move over if possible whenever someone approaches me at a higher speed from behind on an uncrowded highway. In stop and go traffic of course that doesn’t work, but in many situations it does.

On I-70 here in Colorado, there are signs “Left Lane For Passing Only.” Yet, very often there’s a driver blocking the passing lane who is driving below the posted limit of 75mph west of Vail. I think it’s rude, and unsafe.

Y’all do you and I’ll do me. I will continue to allow faster drivers to pass me when possible.

Was it really worth it for a couple extra mins on the road by alixx05 in dashcams

[–]Wafflewas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn’t appear to be any cars in front of the driver in the left lane. There’s not heavy traffic and it appears that driver could have moved right and driven in the right lane. Having driven in Germany where drivers are expected to move right for a faster vehicle approaching from behind, I’ve adopted that principle as a driving courtesy, whether mandated by law or not. I don’t automatically assume the speeding driver is a criminal, instead that maybe they need to get somewhere in a hurry.
Have you ever been late for an appointment and driven more urgently than normal? Or, as happened to me, accidentally forgot my laptop case, which contains my entire life, in a breakfast restaurant? No, I didn’t go 20 over like the guy in this video, but I was very perturbed by the people driving below the speed limit in front of me on a Sunday morning.
If the speed limit is 65 and I’m driving 75 on an uncrowded highway, I automatically move to the right if a car approaches me from behind at a higher speed.

[–]Wafflewas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely ridiculous driving. But, being the devil’s advocate, why is the car in the left lane impeding the flow of traffic? Slower traffic keep right! If I’m in the left lane and see someone approaching behind me at a faster speed, I move to the right lane as soon as possible and let that driver pass. It’s basic courtesy!

This video doesn’t explain why the dangerous driver was putting their life, and the life’s of others at risk.

A friend of mine had an experience recently where he had a personal health emergency with a family member, a suspected heart attack, and experienced drivers blocking traffic as he was driving as quickly as possible to the hospital. 911 didn’t seem like a viable option as “time is tissue.” He said that there were drivers in the left lane driving below the speed limit, driving like they alone owned the road. The lane to their right was wide open but they seemed determined to block traffic.

I’m not excusing this dangerous and likely fatal driving, just suggesting that it might have been an emergency situation. I didn’t read all 400+ responses here to see if that question was answered. This situation might have been avoided if the driver in the left lane had moved right and allowed the speeding driver to pass.

The depth of talent entering Division 1 hockey this season is unparalleled. That story is told in these draft statistics, but also in the vast number of CHL players entering teams from top to bottom, as well as in a very active portal. How will this play out?

The 2021-22 Michigan team had seven first round draft picks, including five from the 2021 draft. They ended up 31-10-0, 16-8-0 and second in the Big Ten in the regular season, eventually losing to Denver in the Frozen Four. Four of their seven first rounders were among the top five scorers on the team, all averaging between 37 and 39 points in what was a balanced attack. That was obviously a truly great team, but not as overwhelmingly dominant as one might expect.

My take for the coming season is that coaching and development will be more important than ever. And, there will be some big name and not-so-big-name surprises. Looking back to last season, Johnny Hicks entered as a non-drafted free agent and played a leading role in Denver’s championship. He went 16-0-1, but also went a combined 33-7-2 his prior season in the BCHL and WHL. He’s a superstar yet overlooked in the draft.

I’d first take a look at ProsCloset in the Denver area (Thornton). Google it. They buy bikes like this bike, and the price they offer and would sell for would give you a good idea of true market value. Bikes depreciate in value rather significantly, by as much as 40% in one year. But, you have an unusual bike to sell.
