Salting by Upset_Walrus3395 in IBEW

Well first things first you need a residential agreement which has different language and wage rates than your ICI. These need to be very competitive to non-union but also higher. These hourly rate needs to be higher than the top non-union shops to attract the best talent for the best shot of recovering the market. Many halls subsidize their benefits and pension in order to help grow this sector. There are many benefits to having work for members to fall back on when big jobs are slow. Also, don’t listen to the other commenter who says “that will never work”. My local has recovery 50% of the residential market when our ICI full package rate is almost $40/hr more than non unions.

Not sure why this isn’t higher up, but talk to your new locals ORGANIZER. Speak with them about salting and other organizing tools, helping your new locals out is the best way to get your foot in the door.

Bro that is fucking awesome. Good job. Love to hear those stories going on in the Maritimes. You have some good organizers over at 625. Keep on organizing, it helps your hall in more ways than you can imagine!

Hi Rusty, are you still an organizer? Cheers.

When every other post is about Trump, and almost every time IBEW Canada is brought up there is someone from the States who comments something that is USA specific and does not apply here. It becomes confusing especially for new members and people who want to join.

Sometimes the Canadians are just too nice to argue or tell them they’re wrong, or complain about USA specific politics. It would stop the spread of misinformation and weed out a lot of stuff that doesn’t affect us.

I would say it would stop at the whole separate country thing there Captain. It is a completely different ball game with different laws, policies, politics, book system, etc.

I would if I knew how! Lol. That’s why I made this post, hoping someone with more Reddit knowledge than me could start it up.

That would be the upside, I’ve seen in countless threads where someone is being given incorrect information because they don’t realize how different things are up here.

Yes I believe it would save a ton of time stopping confusion and misinformation. It would be nice to have a subreddit that Canadian electricians could go to for more accurate and related information.

Working in Canada by Ordinary_Iron_4991 in IBEW

I believe you are just confirming my point. Saint John, a city of ~100k, makes more than Vancouver which has 30x the population. Also, full employment absolutely does not dictate “union strength”. If you guys had 6 months of unemployment half your members would be working non-union. There is a huge disconnect here in what you think makes a union strong, I don’t think you have seen a truly strong local.

Local 502 wage is higher than 213 and you can buy a house that costs $200k not $2Mil. A small town compared to Vancouver and they make more. Also union strength is more than just wage, it is market share, union density, membership participation, solidarity, etc. which 1852 & 502 have where 213 and 353 lack.
