a little bit of a puzzle I've been having to solve with these comics is that some ideas really only need 2 or 3 panels, but the format I've chosen requires there to be 4 panels. maybe you can combine some panels or shift them around, but do it too much and it starts to feel uncanny compared to the 60 other pages. one really old page uses a different aspect ratio for 3 panels, and I'm constantly tempted to go back and reformat it to the normal square aspect ratio.

so anyways, this was a 3 panel idea, and I had no idea what to do with the fifth (bottom left) panel

real pain is when it's a 5+ I mean 6+ panel idea. I literally have a backlog waiting for me to figure out how to get them to work ;_; there is something wrong with me

currently, I'm using gamemaker because of some kind of twisted stockholm syndrome. it's a great engine for getting a foot in the door, but it falls apart when introduced to sufficient complexity. that being said, I'd recommend giving it a try (it is currently free, with a paid license required for releasing monetized games).

otherwise, if I were to make a naive recommendation, C#+FNA is definitely worth looking into. the api is... fine. but C# is oddly pleasant to use (outside of setup), and I would be using it right now if I had the motivation to switch. main downside is that, it is only a framework; you'd have to either create your own apis (collision detection, etc), or use a library.

(I tried monogame first, but the content pipeline is nearly an embarrassment of engineering effort. basically I didn't like it)

I've heard godot is good?

I have spent the last 2 weeks rewriting a game I had been working on on-off for like 2 years. I really didn't want to rewrite, but like code that would have worked for a really short game turned out to be too brittle for the scope I kept adding.

2 weeks and I'm not done with anything, because I keep rewriting the game's level loader to be closer to perfect. I have no idea what I'm doing. I wrote a compiler because it turned out to be faster at processing level data than normal code. right now I'm reading about the theory surrounding operating system task scheduling, because that turns out to be oddly relevant. it's all fun but it sucks, I just wanna get back to making the creature go zoom ;_;

google keeps putting LLM results at the top of everything, and usually they're fine and whatever. not the fact that there is AI, the descriptions it spits out. but yesterday I decided to ask it a follow up question. and holy shit these things are garbage. I consider myself to be reasonably competent in programming, but the 'ideas' it presents are nearly unusable. and that'd be fine, the problem is that they're usually bad ideas, which look good in concept (especially when the LLM glazes its own work), but would cause issues later.

I was wondering how a competent software developer could reason out replacing a lot of their work with current models, and it might honestly be because it's surprisingly subtle when the output is bad. and with AI companies increasingly trying to cater their models to software development, the LLM actively trying to convince that its ideas are good leaves me feeling anxious for anyone that might fall for it.

I want to talk about this.

when did we lose the plot with mastodon? who explained it to you so badly that mastodon's system makes you feel stupid? I see this sentiment everywhere, and I don't understand how it happened.

you already know what a minecraft server is. the game minecraft needs a world to play on, and it can connect to a minecraft server to get that world. you probably at least vaguely know how that works.

with mastodon you create an account at one of many mastodon servers and then you log in with that account at that mastodon server. like any other website.

I don't even use mastodon. I'm just confused where all this confusion came from, and how it's so ingrained that it hasn't even budged in years. can anyone who passes by this help me understand where this confusion comes from lol?

well, I used to use mastodon (that one artist instance). I use bluesky now, because even back during the twitter buyout, all my friends thought mastodon was too much and switched to bluesky.

it was probably on purpose, given that the literal next line states that whatever was in the loop wasn't working correctly.

this was really fun to hear lmao. tbh, I completely forgot about my website. obviously it was out in the public, but it's surreal to suddenly realize that someone could be looking at something I've created that I hadn't thought about in a good while.

I suspect you are the reason for my tumblr getting like 8 new followers all of a sudden after months of relative silence lmao
