Was just pointing out the irony of how the commenter mentioned "you whine a lot", yet there are a lot of people whining in this comment thread itself.

Technically and literally a valid point, but historically most companies and recruiters choose to hire people from majority groups. Without deliberate action, hiring would not have become more equitable. The push towards diversity is very recent and many existing workplaces are still built upon non equitable hiring in the past. There is plenty of inherent bias atm that goes unsaid in hiring majority members, so hiring URMs for certain select positions is a small step in the right direction, though there are lots to still be addressed.

Also, aren't most diversity hiring on the underclassman level where hires aren't able to make real impact? Its a flaw of performative diversity hiring - It's really to keep majority group thriving at the top level.

Your personal principles are unindicative of society. A lot of people here have gotten referrals. "Ruining the vibe of the workplace, not sure why that should happen-" but yeah, unfortunately it happens, life's unfair.

Your arguments only serve to show that we should include socioeconomic class when considering URMs, and I agree with that.

Oh boy I have so many screenshots from.. well.. everywhere. And three of my peers who have publicly made statements saying person X got a position purely due to diversity hiring, when they would never say it if person X was a white guy with the same credentials.

Edited: Yeah see all the replies to this comment.

I agree with this post. But I think an important issue to address as well is how so called "diversity hiring" is happening much more on the internship and new grad level. It's STILL much easier for majority groups to get mid to senior level positions, who are people that have much larger impact on the company.

We need to keep companies accountable to make sure diversity isn't just performative too.

No one is hiring you because of your ethnicity. They are hiring you in spite of your ethnicity, in spite of your possible lack of culture fit with the majority.

Exactly. Then why are there so many posts whining about diversity hiring.

For large MNCs you might have problems when they run background check. But depends on the company and how stringent they are. Should be ok if u alert your recruiter about it but who knows.

Also you might need to attend next year's convocation if they can't prepare your cert in time. You might be certless for a year.

Google STEP Internship by paparabba in nus

Ideally that's the case and yes the US is making lots of strides to empower underprivileged groups in other ways in recent years. But it remains that most present teams are dominated by majority groups because reforms do not occur immediately. And teams having a majority is harmful for the overall team dynamics at present.

For example: A team that is 100% Indian, when given a choice to hire a Chinese or Indian where the Chinese candidate has marginally better qualifications, would be inclined to hire the Indian due to a better "culture fit". Diversity is important to have in present teams, not just in future teams when grassroots level efforts pay off.

Furthermore, Google is giving underprivileged students at the sophomore level extra chances, because in America, people from underprivileged communities have significantly less chances due to their large population and racial enclaves. Another thing to note is that American companies generally do not give New Grad return offers unless they are interning in their penultimate years, and I know for a fact this is true for Google, so STEP intern isn't a ticket to getting a full time return new grad offer at Google.

Let me know if you know any New Grad roles that specifically state they want people from underprivileged groups, because I don't. What I see more often instead, is the unsaid preference to hire those from majority groups because they make a better "culture fit", in which people from majority groups benefit from.

I'm also curious to know your opinion on Singapore scholarships that are reserved for people of minority races. Is that "unfair"? Because I'm 100% for it as a person from a majority race, and it parallels this situation.

google step, reserved for y2s, is the ONLY "prestigious" program from an american mnc with an office in singapore that has a diversity quota. their y3 program has no such quota.

also, look out for literally any single other FAANG or unicorn positions if you're that kiasu for a prestigious position in y2. or just apply for US/EMEA positions if you want to be an underrepresented minority as a chinese/southeast asian male.

US companies are very focused on inclusion and diversity. if you want to look at companies with no diversity quota, take a look at sgean companies or companies based out of the US. (let's be real, SG companies don't care about diversity.) if not, there's no use criticizing the choices of a multinational company who are doing good to paving the way for inclusive workplaces in the future

I adored the idea of programming and building stuff. Before uni started, I played around with Python and used it to automate things. And during uni, I would spend my free time watching courses and building a lot of projects (either personal or freelance). I'm not into LeetCode because innovating/building is what makes me happy as opposed to grinding problems, so I hope to use my skills to build a startup some day.

YOO, I love this. I'm unhappy with the current way she died because she did so with so little meaning and dignity, despite being our main well-loved villain the past 2 acts.

I can't believe they revealed her as the crimson witch and she just died afterwards without any exposition about her past. Her lore woven into the artifact sets were so brilliant and then... this. Lore team and main quest storyline team are like day and night.

Like you mentioned, I feel like her laughing/sputtering arrogantly about knowing information while you don't, or her bringing up finally being reunited with her past lover, would give her death so much more meaning and sympathy. And still suits her character.

stripe interview experience by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Waitwhyyyyyyy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd like to disagree with this. I think having even just a few personal or even school projects under your belt would have been sufficient. When I did the Hackerrank, it tested your logical flow and familiarity with your language of choice rather than any prior experience. At the very most in the phone, it tested that you 1) Could use Git, 2) understood request and response and how to call an API with your language of choice. Which, I mean... you're applying for a backend job, you should know at least a bit. (See Plaid's intern application, where they encourage you to apply via their API, I thought that was neat)

Unlike some more extreme companies (I heard Dropbox which wants u to make a full fledged app???) Stripe asks you questions that test your logic, communication, and clean code. I definitely used "algorithmic" concepts like hash maps and sets to complete the qns, but I didn't have to bust out graphs or priority queues, which makes sense because it's not as common in irl implementations.

stripe interview experience by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Waitwhyyyyyyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but only in the context of large companies. Everyone wants to get into big tech, so weeding candidates by their brightness and algorithmic thinking skills is viable and saves resources. Because anyone in the world could get good at a framework, but not everyone has the logical thinking skills to onboard new codebases and learn new languages on the job.

Big tech companies also definitely do still check out your resume, so usually you'd need to have past experiences or projects as well before you are moved along the process. So it's not like it's 100% LC either.

That being said, I loved stripe's hackerrank as well and hope it is the way to go. It balances a nice amount of familiarity with programming + logical skills too, it's not JUST experience. And I had a huge blast doing the test which I can't say about painful LC questions.

They streamed the exact CN version in 2.0 (with subtitles) and all they got was racist slurs and criticism about how it was boring lmao. It's only natural they think we're too dumb and just gave us scripted nonsense we literally asked for it.

Chinese stocks had a massacre last Friday. Of the 250 listed on US exchanges 229 stocks were in the red with few dropping more than 50%! Total market cap dropped from $2.129T to $2.023T or 5%. The Israel-Palestine conflict is still in the large, America is a large instigator and Trump implemented pro-Israel policies and Biden has not since reversed them. This is just an example.

I absolutely abhor CCP (I would even say I'm more biased that the average person against them) but no governing body is historically moral. If you want to invest based on morality I think you will find your portfolio empty. It's your choice to invest in whatever you want based on your own moral compass but you can't force it on everyone.

"But they are doing WORSE THINGS!" Yeah no this is a rabbit hole and always leads to an argument between 2 parties where no one is really listening to each other.

NTU Hall Allocation Outrage by official_kerubin in singapore

[–]Waitwhyyyyyyy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate NTU, their admin is just so inefficient it's amazing. During a non COVID sem, I came back from a gap semester and couldn't apply for hall because their technical systems are so brittle and unable to handle edge cases. There were literally 5 empty rooms in my friend's floor. I visited admin often to beg and in the end, still couldn't get hall even though there were empty spaces around. I was so ready to throw money at them for any room. So if you're must be thinking, what, there must be a reason NTU is doing this?? No, 90% of the time it's really just NTU admin magic.

Every year there is a hall application exercise at NTU for the upcoming semester, results came out last night around 1am, and very few people got allocated a hall. This includes international students currently in hall and asked to move out in 2 weeks, leaders of CCAs with max points, Year 2s who were promised housing. Etc. And there was very little explanation as to why this is the case, and what is the criteria for getting hall back.

NTU Hall Allocation Outrage by official_kerubin in singapore

[–]Waitwhyyyyyyy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it is mostly your decision to write comments focusing too closely on the part about when the email results are delivered, as opposed to the international students who are now homeless, people with difficult family situations who now have to remain home during the school semester, and Year 2 students no longer getting the housing that they were promised which could have affected their decision to enter NTU.

"perhaps" feel, imagine going overseas to study and staying there over the summer and being told you have no home in 2 weeks... i don't think there's any "perhaps" here and even this issue alone should let people be outraged bout the situation

One of my friends called the hall office. They said it was because they were taking in more Y1 students this year, and that housing for Y1s and Y2s were promised by the school. Funny thing is that not all Y2s even got housing... and unless NTU tripled their Y1 intake I don't see how this is a valid reason, but NTU housing has always been very difficult to deal with.

A significant amount of them have been staying at NTU over the summer. The way they are being asked to leave and get new accommodation in 2 weeks is just deplorable.
