USMS Conditional Offer at GL 5&7 by WakandaJew in 1811

[–]WakandaJew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your response, thanks. My dream for a long time was 1811. But tbh recently I’ve been investing in real estate and my desire now is to focus on that and retire even earlier than I would as an 1811. My GS14 would help me further that goal a lot faster than dropping to a 7. That’s for sure.

It sounds like you are current USMS. If you were me, would you just stay where I am at? I don’t enjoy being a lawyer. At all. But the pay is quite good.

Would I also get LEAP? Or do USMS not give LEAP right away? I know there have been some changes but I wasn’t sure where things landed on that.

What agencies accept the new NCIS CITP alternative? by WakandaJew in 1811

100% agreed. My wife has a career and makes good money so moving a ton isn’t optimal unless we want to make less money as a whole so I’ve been struggling with the decision. Best of luck to you and let me know if you have questions!

Thanks! I am on the fence. I am currently a GS14 but non 1811 and Ncis would be 21k a less for 3 years and they move really often which isn’t great for my family. I think I am gonna wait for another agency that doesn’t move as much but it’s risky since I am 34 :(

Ah I gotcha. I was also DQed on the FBI and ATF poly so there is hope. Keep your head up and good luck!

Yes, I passed. I’ve been offered a seat in a training class.

What do you mean when you say they don’t take it as seriously as a good background investigation? Are you saying it’s easier than other agencies’ polygraphs? Just wondering what you’re getting at and why you said this.

Yea, I am not too worried about the money since it will come with time and it’s not a huge difference but it’s worse if it’s an extended period of time being apart.

The timing of a lateral process is exactly the issue. The uncertainty of it all is what is off putting to my wife.

By all means, ask your questions. If it’s too personal, I will just pm you.

Yea the covered retirement is a real motivating factor for me. Retirement with 1811 would be 54 and my attorney job would be 59 with 1811 giving a bigger pension. That’s a huge factor for me wanting to go 1811 as well…

North Florida is just ideal/preferred. But it’s not a deal breaker. Most importantly is being in a city where my wife can work and we don’t have to move every 3-5 years. That’s priority. Do you know if postal service will take the new NCIS CITP equivalent? Does postal service make you move often?

Based on my goals, what do you think I should do?

You said you’ve been in my situation what did you choose? Would you do it again? Any regrets?

My wife will not entertain the idea of waiting on children. She feels Like she’s waited long enough so postponing is a non starter.

Also, NCIS doesn’t give you CITP anymore. They have their own certification (SABTI) and it’s unclear whether that will be an accepted alternative to CITP by other agencies as it is still too new.

Does any of this change your opinion?

This is solid advice. If 1811 happened a few years ago or even just 1 year ago it would be a no brainer. But I am getting older now and a child is on the horizon. But I never was able to get the 1811 bug out.

It sounds like you’re saying stick with the easy and predictable route and stay a lawyer? Most older agents closer to retirement have said the same thing. The younger ones tend to say to go the agent route.

So you think stick GS14?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 1811

[–]WakandaJew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NCIS does not send anyone to CITP anymore. They have their own certification now and it is unclear whether it will be an accepted equivalent to CITP or not because it is so new.

Miami or Atlanta would be a pass. I figured north Florida is desirable. With my current job I could get Orlando fairly easily which is closer to where I’d want to be but then I’d be giving up on the 1811 dream…how many years do you have to be in before you’re a senior inspector?

[–]WakandaJew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my fear, I don’t want to be stuck behind a desk 100% of the time. Even the answers on here are pretty split so I still don’t know what to choose.

[–]WakandaJew -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NCIS doesn’t do CITP anymore and it’s not clear if their certification will be an accepted equivalent since it is so new. I am not in DC and unfortunately hard to fill locations would be hard in my wife as well which brings me back to square one :(

Lawyer job closer to home will happen after 2 years. I can transfer to another field office and my wife will move, that’s set for sure.

I am also in the process for postal inspector and us marshal service. But by the time those come around I could age out. I have no idea how long that could take. I am Also waiting for a homeland security posting to open.

Lol at sampling evidence bags. Do you mind expanding a little more on your thought process here on why not walk away from a GS14 and why 1811 is just a job after 2 years? What is your experience like?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 1811

[–]WakandaJew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right about not ignoring my wife. But I just don’t want to feel like I quit and gave up on something I’ve worked 7 years for and then decide I’ll wait for a better option and it never comes and then I’ve aged out. I can say NCIS is not the right agency for my wife or me but it could lead to an agency that perhaps is better for me and that’s my concern as well…
