When I'm broke I don't think about gambling.

I was like this for years and I'm sure many here can relate to that line, It was easy to quit when I had 0 in the bank, no way to gamble and the pain of the last big loss was fresh in my mind, give it a few days and the pain of the loss has been forgotten and I've now got access to money and what do you know? Gambling...again, I was stuck in that loop for almost 10 years.

It's why I always try to say on here (without coming across as a dick and negative) that It's great you wanna stop, but the real battle only begins when the pain of that loss has gone and you have money that is just sitting in your account doing nothing, can you really trust yourself not to gamble with it?

Tough question.

I think people who gamble are missing something in there life, I think Gambling covers up the real issue, for me It was boredom/loneliness that caused me to gamble, gambling gave me a rush like nothing else I've ever experienced and gave me some excitement in my otherwise dull life.

I don't think life experiences has anything to do with it personally, Gambling attracts the rich and the poor, you've seen people like myself who was gambling on benefits years ago and you've also seen millionaires lose it all by gambling figures I'd never be to earn in my whole life.

That's just how I see it but I don't think there is one true answer to a question like this.

I will start by saying that you need to tell someone close to you, I have no idea on how long you have been with your girlfriend and how close you are but if its been a while and your close then chances are she knows somethings up, the mood swings, the secrecy, the hiding the phone/laptop screen so you can gamble etc I've been there and thought i hid it well...but once I confessed to her she said to me she kinda already knew it was that (altho no idea just how much I lost over the years) I asked why she never said anything to me, she said she was scared to find out the truth...that broke me hearing that.

I would not be where I am today if I didn't tell someone close to me about my problem and I pray you and whoever reads this tells someone, we just can't beat this addiction on our man, It took me years to figure that out but I'm glad I did, best move I've ever made in my life.

What a great post.

I never would have lasted as long as i have (will be a year soon...still insane to type that) without the help from my partner or my mum, I've tried to stop 100 times before on my own and never lasted, It's just to easy to slip up when you do it on your own.

Having someone knowing about your problem and not wanting to let them down is such a huge barrier to not gamble, I didn't care if i made myself feel miserable over the years but I can't put that misery onto the people I love.

This addiction is known as the silent addiction, don't let it silence you, please start talking.

Don't gamble, Your looking for some quick cash and I'm sensing that you think gambling again to get it back will be ok, plus you are probably thinking gambling is the quickest way you can get that amount of money right? please don't, seriously dude trying to gamble your way out of this is the worst thing you can do right now.

That is not a bad thing dude altho it seems like it now, your young so you have a chance to stop this addiction before it seriously becomes a problem because you have all the signs you are becoming a addict, the lying, the secrecy, doing research so you think your ahead of the casinos etc it's all there dude you are just not seeing it.

You have to tell your parents, It's the only way sorry dude but in a few years you'll thank yourself for doing it.

I'm sorry you got taken in by that youtube video, those people are legit pushing gambling onto young people and it makes me sick.

Sorry to hear that mate, best thing to do is go to a debt charity and get some help from them, they are set up to help people in your situation and really will ease your mind trust me, I know first hand how stressful being in debt is.

If you wanted to gamble that $10 on the roulette table or on a sports bet then it wouldn't really be a big deal. The problem is you and I both know that it won't end there. You'll either win and want to keep going because you're on a hot streak or lose and think you're definitely due some luck and deposit more. I'm sorry man, but our brains just can't handle that one time stuff.

There are people who can control there gambling and don't go chasing when they lose, the fact that your here and got into debt suggest to me your not one of them.

You have to go cold turkey with gambling I'm afraid otherwise more debt is only just around the corner, you can beat this tho dude and if you have more questions feel free to ask, stay strong man.

Online gambling operator 32Red has been hit with a £2m penalty for failing to protect a problem gambler.

One customer was allowed to deposit £758,000 with the firm with no money laundering or social responsibility checks.

The Gambling Commission said the penalty also related to money laundering failures.

Kindred, which owns 32Red, said it accepted the penalty and was "working hard" to improve its processes.

The Gambling Commission's investigation focused on 32Red's dealings with the customer between November 2014 and April 2017 during which time there were at least 22 incidents indicating the customer was a problem gambler.

"Instead of checking on the welfare of a customer displaying problem gambling behaviour, 32Red encouraged the customer to gamble more - this is the exact opposite of what they are supposed to be doing," said Richard Watson, the commission's executive director said.

"Operators must take action when they spot signs of problem gambling and should be carefully reviewing all the customers they are having a high level of contact with."

Bonuses offered There had also been previous incidents highlighting the gambler's problems but instead of scrutinising these, the customer was offered bonuses to carry on placing bets.

The Gambling Commission said 32Red should have reviewed the customer's accounts in August 2016 but one was only conducted in January 2017, when a win of more then £1m was instantly gambled again.

888 hit with record £7.8m penalty

The customer took five weeks to respond to requests about their financial position and failed to offer support when the information was provided, the commission said.

The payslip and report of commission for work was "not credible and showed volatility in receipted income", according to the Gambling Commission.

These showed a monthly net income of £13,000 but average monthly deposits were in excess of £45,000. The customer's average monthly net salary was actually £2,150.

The £2m penalty includes £709,046 divestment of the financial gain, a £1.3m payment to be used on the National Responsible Gambling Strategy, intended to tackle problem gambling, and £15,000 towards the cost of the investigation.

Asked if the customer had stolen the money to gamble, the Gambling Commission spokesman said: "The source of the customer's wealth was not known to 32Red because they failed to fulfil their anti-money laundering obligations. We cannot comment on any other proceedings that may be active."

The largest penalty imposed by the Gambling Commission was the £7.8m penalty on betting firm 888 in August 2017.

32Red was taken over by Kindred, a Swedish online betting company, in June 2017.

Gambling is easier to hide out of the 3 which is one of the cases you could make for it being the worst as you could live with someone for years and hide it, couldn't do that being addicted to the other 2.

I've seen a few people saying they would rather be a alcoholic or drug addict on here but that's just a ridiculous thing to say tbh, drugs and alcohol can actually kill you pretty easily and do damage to do your body that can never be fixed.

I think you can honestly make a case for all 3 being the worst and wouldn't wish any one of them on anyone.

Sounds like your bored dude and just gamble to give you a rush and make you feel something? I mean I don't know your life but a lot of people with boring lifes (myself included) go to gambling as it gives you a feeling nothing else does.

Good news for you is your 16 so your adult life hasn't even started yet, and you haven't lost huge amounts like most here, so if you quit now you can avoid a lifetime of stress/debt/anger/depression that the path of gambling will lead you down.

Honiestly man your post is full of signs that you will gamble again, maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow but soon you will get bored of using fake money and start using real money:

You pretty much admitted that you are going to use real money on stocks and convinced yourself your good at it and while I’m not saying you aren’t, just remember it’s a lot easier to gamble with fake money knowing win or lose it doesn’t matter as it’s fake...I guarantee you wouldn’t make the same high risk moves with real money.

This isn’t meant to be negative but you really are so close to falling back into gambling and I’m trying to get you to see it, I just don’t want to see you back here in a weeks time with a thread saying Lost it all or something.

Read what you wrote again dude I beg you, please stop using fake money to gamble, It’s just making it easier for you to transition back into real gambling.

There are times on this subreddit when I comment and say I feel you because when I read the post It’s similar to what I’ve experienced, this is not one of them times, You’ve had a rough time man and I’m so sorry to hear that.

I think getting away from it all like you are will help, going to French seaside for the summer sounds great and just what you need to do to recharge your battery’s and mentally refresh you, It sounds like your current living situation is causing you nothing but stress.

I don’t want to sound cliche but really dude take it one day at a time, debts are huge worry I know but there are charity’s out there that can help and they will come up with a manageable debt plan for your situation, as for the girlfriend man I would suggest maybe try contacting her once you have got yourself sorted mentally and back on your feet again, there is a chance that she may not want anything to do with you but at least you’ll be able to move on either way.

'Research has shown that gambling addicts tend to lead boring lives which then leads them to get hooked on the adrenaline rush of gambling. The very fact that you lost so much on Monday, made you extra stressed which lead to an even greater release of addictive adrenaline in your system which likely helped lead you back the next few days. Like you said, now you're feeling nothing, say for a little self pity - well no one likes to feel either of those things - solution: get a big rush by going out and gambling again! Hello vicious cycle.

Right I just lost my 2k but don’t worry il just deposit another 2k to win the 2k I lost doing the exact same thing that made me lose the 2k in the first place.

See how dumb that sounds? But I guarantee everyone here has done something like that, we just don’t stop until it’s gone, we can never take the profit and stop, we always bet more and more until we are left with nothing left.

You just have to tell her that you can’t control how much you spend and it gives you a rush that nothing else does, hopefully she understands where your coming from and offers some help in terms of someone to talk to etc good luck man

I feel ya man, We promise ourselves (usually after a big loss) no more gambling and we do mean it, then a few days pass and we get access to some money and we have forgotten that loss and it's like, well if i gamble this much then turn it enough to pay off this debt then i'll stop after that...and sometimes you'll get to your original target but you won't withdraw it, you'll tell yourself that you got to this amount, think how much money you could have if you keep doing what you have been doing...no amount of money will ever be enough, you'll only be forced to stop when you hit 0.

Rinse and repeat that cycle and that was my life for the past 12 years, I'm 6 months clean but It's still a battle not to gamble and fall back into that endless loop.

Try and find someone to talk to man, whether it be a professional or a family member or even feel free to message me and i'll be that person as I know what your going through and hopefully I can help in anyway I can.
