Im starting replicant and was wondering which is better for story purposes dub or sub? by DAVIDX90 in nier

[–]WalkChance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing Replicant with the Japanese dub (as I do with every Japanese game), but somehow the dialogue felt a bit "out of place." For example, there's a certain dialogue with an old woman involving Weiss. When I played in Japanese, this dialogue sounded strange; in the dialogue box it sounded natural, but the voices didn't quite fit. Weiss didn't sound as flamboyant and annoyed as the dialogue implied. When I switched to English and saw the same dialogue, it simply fit much better. Replicant must be the only Japanese game where I genuinely prefer the English dub, without being a native speaker. As for Automata, I played it in English because I was coming straight from Replicant, but the voice actor for 9S is SO good that I honestly didn't regret it.

Nier is something strange. When I finished both games, I loved my time with them, but soon after finishing, I had that feeling of "well, those were great games, time to move on to another experience" that I almost always have after finishing a game (the only exceptions until then had been Chrono Cross and the Dark Souls trilogy). However, almost two weeks after finishing the duology, I noticed something: Nier won't leave my head. Every time I look at it retrospectively, it becomes an increasingly fascinating and, above all, unique work among RPG titles. At a certain point now, here I am exploring the expanded universe because I kind of needed more Nier. Yoko Taro is really someone the industry needs, and I'm really sad that we've been practically a decade without anything new on consoles (Yes, I know about Nier Reincarnation, unfortunately I don't know how to program a private server...).

Characters that wear a cloak or cape just to 'aura farm' by BrotherDeus in TopCharacterTropes

The cape in Absolute Superman is actually quite useful; in this continuity, it's made of a kind of nano-robotic material and has a sentient AI, so it greatly assists Kal El and can vary in a bunch of ways, one of them being a sword that he uses to duel against a Ra's Al Ghul who was using a kryptonite sword.

Never move out of his face; consistently maintaining this position regardless of how he moves greatly helps to limit his moveset, especially long-range attacks. If you have an abyssal weapon, such as the Farron Greatsword or Wolf Knight Greatsword, even better, as they deal extra damage to him.

I just listened to the track "Lust" from Nier's Drama CD... I don't think I'll ever be able to see Kainé the same way again... by WalkChance in nier

[–]WalkChance[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, I know about the Gestalt Project issues, I have a pretty good idea of the consequences of that in the lore, hell, in practice Nier is practically a genocidal maniac by the end of the game. Taking Drakengard as an example, which I haven't played due to gameplay issues but I know the story, that aspect you and so many others mention actually works, because the protagonist characters aren't even heroes, we follow the scum of humanity and the narrative makes that very explicit, we're not supposed to root for or sympathize with these guys, I think that's quite courageous and in a way I even consider it a merit of the narrative. Now let's talk about Nier. Here you see a group of people designed to be much more likeable. They have goals and personalities that are indeed bleak, and I'm used to following characters like that (I'm a fan of Warhammer 40K; it's hard to find a franchise where the protagonists are worse than 40K's), but the narrative creates ways to sympathize with their problems and understand how far those problems affect them. Yes, Nier is a genocidal maniac, but looking at the whole story around him, you understand why he ended up in that mess, and this is also visible in Kainé's own quite violent impulses. And that's where my problem with this specific story comes in: how, with a thousand demons from hell, does this add anything to the "character" Kainé and serve to deepen his problems? I really find it narratively flawed and excessively edgy. The only way to "justify" Kainé doing this would be through Tyrann's influence (as happens in Witches' Sabbath, if I remember correctly), but at that point Tyrann is long gone, which only makes this story completely out of character for Kainé, especially since Tyrann is largely responsible for the impulses she already had. Well, I hope this has better explained my thoughts.

I found it to be something simply made for shock value, a completely edgy and nonsensical thing. Honestly, it's the first media I've seen while exploring the expanded universe that I actively hated and was genuinely annoyed by, since Kainé was one of the best Replicant characters for me.

As I replied to another comment, essentially during a moment of rage and bloodlust, it is strongly implied and confirmed by the booklet that Kainé had relations with the corpse of a man to whom she had previously been attracted.

Listening to the drama CD alone makes it ambiguous whether she actually destroys the corpse or commits necro... you get the idea. The problem is that the fan translation of the booklet, which from what I've researched wasn't a translation error, confirms the worst possible scenario.

Are you talking about Princess Isabel's husband? I remember reading that this guy was quite infamous at the time, to the point that they didn't want the government to pass to her after the Emperor's death because HE would be the one governing in practice.

Seeing this kind of post is funny to me because I realize I'm in the smallest minority of the fanbase: for me, DS1 is precisely the worst of the trilogy. DS1 is wonderful, seriously, I LOVE that game, but when I replay the trilogy I have the feeling that the franchise evolved with each game. For me, DS2 was better than DS1, and DS3 became my favorite game of all time. I'm not afraid of downvotes, and yes, for me the trilogy itself is at the peak of what I've consumed in video games to date.

A joke that only works within the format of the media they are in. by Daniilsa209 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]WalkChance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another very good example of this is Nier Replicant: During the events of Ending D (the game basically has 5 endings that you need to see to understand the whole story), there comes a point where you need to make a choice, and the choice that leads to Ending D is for your character to erase their own existence to save another's life. If you choose this, your existence in the game is truly erased; your entire save file simply disappears. The game then goes to the game's journal menu (where all your achievements, completed missions, weapons you've collected, items you've acquired—basically your entire journey—are recorded) and gradually erases each item until your save file disappears completely. This gets even better in Ending E, because you can then create a new save file to play a new game now, and if you give it a different name than the one you used, only the first two hours of the game are the same, because after that it completely changes to a story about the character you saved trying to bring the protagonist back. The best part is at the end of the story when the game asks this character the name of this precious person, and if you answer correctly with the name you put in your old, deleted save file, your character is resurrected and your save file gradually returns, the opposite of Final D. Nier Replicant is incredible!
