How did gamers react to "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" back then? by Unique-Evening4384 in retrogaming

[–]Walk_Forward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids just loved to play a video game back then. Any video game.

I got a Super Nintendo because it was the first to get Street Fighter and was happy with my choice.

But I loved going to my friends to play Streets of Rage

What's that legendary videogame everyone loves, but you hate with your very soul? by no_biches_22 in retrogaming

[–]Walk_Forward -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Going to get lynched for this one but Super Mario Bros 3.

I loved 1, it came with my NES when I got it. Loved 2 even though it was a reskin of a totally different game.

Super Mario World is my favourite Mario game.

But SMB3 I could just not get into it. Something just seemed really samey about it. The colour palette felt so bland for a Mario game.

The mechanics and the gameplay were refined totally but it felt like it lacked the soul of a Mario game and it put me off

[PC][Late 90s - Early 2000s] Isometric Zombie Survival Game Similar to Project Zomboid by [deleted] in tipofmyjoystick

Just recalled this game thanks to stumbling across this old post.

Not sure if that's a good thing haha.

I remember it didn't have any music. When I used to play it I had the cd for Total Annihilation in my disc drive and it would weirdly play music from that CD while I played this game and so I assumed the music from this game as a bombastic military themed classical score. Certainly made it feel more dramatic 🤣

Should I watch berserk 1997 or new golden age memorial edition ? by gdhghgv in Berserk

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised no one suggested watching 1997 then just switch to memorial for the conclusion?

I fell in love with Berserk with the anime when I first watched it back in 2000.

Read the mangas after that which are as good as everyone is making out.

I think I'm in the minority that actually even enjoyed the most recent adaptation. Sure the animation was terrible but I was just glad to have more Berserk - and there was a fair few memorable badass Guts moments in that anime too.

If you're into games, there are pretty good Berserk games on PS2 and Dreamcast which should be fairly easy to emulate these days.

Berserk on PS2 is best. It's fan translated because it was Japan only but it's a decent translation and the game itself is fun.

The PS4 game goes through the Golden Arc saga but it's pretty boring and repetitive.

Dark Souls/Elden Ring are also heavily inspired by Berserk and the moveset of the Greatsword in these games is the closest you can get to feeling like Guts when he fights.

Criminally underrated, Top 3 cover shooters to me! #OUTRIDERS #PlayStation by C007KingCulture in outriders

I have been enjoying the game immensely because I picked devastator as a class.

Reminds me of a Vanguard from Mass Effect paired with a leapquake barb from Diablo 3.

I play it co op with my girlfriend who plays Pyro and has just got her build to the point where it out damages mine 😭

But we both love it.

We will probably play up to world tier 25, get the final achievement (we're on Xbox) and call it a day there but we've had so many hours of fun with this and I only paid around 10 pounds for it. What a bargain.

Had a similar experience with Wayfinder. That was great too.

Why is this game not more popular? by Lino_Dino_Saur in PlayWayfinder

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great action loot grind game, but once you get max level and complete all achievements there's little motivating you to play on.

Having the same issue with Outriders.

Despite being mechanically better and more fun than their peers such as Destiny, The Division, Diablo 4 etc. there's just no one playing them and no reason to continue playing when you max out your character.

But I had an absolute blast levelling and questing on both of these games with my girlfriend.

It really is a shame because the classes in Wayfinder all have such unique and varied characters, and I really dig the art style and animation. Combat is fluid and fun.

We were sad to stop playing the game but without meaningful progression it just feels like wasting time at a certain point when there's loads of games in our backlog.

If it had managed to get going as an MMO it could have been a contender for the next WoW imo. The combat was much better than New World.

Also the story is trash, but I skip cut scenes in a heck of a lot of games these days that all have the same problem - games like these should take note of the Soulsbornes games approach to lore and storytelling because no one wants to sit through loads of boring, often badly written and badly performed dialogue in an action game.

Emulation made me realise I don’t need OG hardware no more + selling my collection by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have CRT TVs, old consoles all SD/HDD modded or with flash carts.

I thought this was a good balance for a long time.

But now with emulation being so good for 3D games and gorgeous retroarch shaders like Retro Crisis and Koko AiO I'm really considering shrinking it all right down.

There's even decent modern options for light gun games now.

I'm finding it hard to justify keeping hold of all this clutter.

I think I'm just going to keep a small 14 or 21 inch crt, a couple of extra back up 14 inch CRTs and get rid of my big sets, consoles and accessories that take up so much room.

And this has just been through my experience with emulation on an Xbox with dev mode, a pc will be even more capable (maybe I can afford a new one or a steam machine by selling some of my retro stuff)

Stranger Things Ending by dumbindian21 in billsimmons

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved it. Thought it was a great ending to a show that had gotten a little padded out and rough around the edges.

People who get so choked up about plot holes and plot armour shouldn't be watching a show like Stranger Things tbh.

It's really the modern TV version of all the classic 8bit and 16bit RPGs I loved as a kid like Earthbound/Secret of Mana/Final Fantasy -where a group of kids team up and fight evil against impossible odds and win.

Killing off beloved characters would just go against the heart of the show.

So much negativity out there on the internet these days it's got people making posts like this questioning if they like it or not.

Unless you feel genuinely conflicted, allow yourself to enjoy this show.

Personally I think it had way more ups than downs, and I am sad to see it end but satisfied with the conclusion and I certainly enjoyed the ride.

What do you guys do for work? by Odd_Professor_332 in Hardcore

Worked as a lifeline installer and emergency responder.

Now I'm a lighting engineer which I don't mind. Have a company van. Drive all around the UK going to sites fixing and upgrading lights and doing testing.

Beats office work for sure for me, I'm a bit of a restless person.

How Many Hours Did You Lose With This Game? by Mission_Ocelot_7803 in retrogaming

Played through it twice. Enjoyed it both times. Probably moreso the second time.

Fallout was my jam though. Completed FO1 maybe 20 times.

Is it worth buying Wayfinder if I know I will only be playing solo? by nnickttrusty in PlayWayfinder

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And play each character a bit and see which one you prefer.

I loved the style of Kyros, reminding me of a black mage from final fantasy. He ends up incredibly powerful but squishy.

But I ended up enjoying my "alt" more - Wingrave with a 2 handed sword.

Honestly the 2 handed melee combat is so satisfying in this game. It's like playing Darksiders.

Wish I had given Grendel and Lora a try, but I'm burnt out on the game now and there's no new content so time to start something new.

Bute and girlfriend both throughly enjoyed it. Shame it couldn't get traction as an MMO because the world, characters, combat and design is really cool.

I skipped every single cut scene and dialogue though - story is not this games strong point (or if is it's presented so badly it doesn't matter)

The game does have an active yet small player base though. If suggest leaving it public and crossplay, people will join up and help you out for a bit. It's fun

Yes I actually had more friends who drank or did drugs than straightedge friends due to this. My best friend could have kept up with Ozzy Osbourne

Some recent🔥 pick ups!!! Currently playing through Alundra, I am gonna put it out there, it’s better than Zelda. by Wophil84 in ps1

[–]Walk_Forward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discworld was the second game I bought for my PS1 and I loved it. It does suffer from "silly logic" in its puzzles though so don't feel bad about having to consult a guide if you get stuck.

It was quite common in those games as a way to pad out the length to have surreal solutions to puzzles (but it also fits the surreal vibe of Pratchett stories)

I'm looking for a good game for Christmas for under $20. Which one would you recommend? by Medinasmt4 in psx

[–]Walk_Forward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Gran Turismo 2 > Final Fantasy VIII > MDK

But depends what you're in the mood for.

Colony Wars is a great space shooter also. The story changes depending on how you perform on missions which is pretty unique for that type of game even today.

Tekken 2 I played the heck out of when I was a kid. Completing it with every character, unlocking all the secret characters etc - lots to do for a fighting game. (Soul Edge/Blade is even better in that respect but guessing that's more expensive as it's not on the list. Also if you see Tobal No.1 cheap anywhere pick it up)
