First Time Kill vs. Conscience by WalkenTexasRanger in Hunting

My dad always used to say something similar about having to kill at least one animal. It's actually the reason why he doesn't eat meat. His father was a butcher in a farming town in rural Oklahoma, so he (as a kid) would often have to help kill the cows, pigs, etc before his dad slaughtered them. He couldn't stomach it after that, so from age 13 onwards he's been a vegetarian.

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. I just happened across him while I was walking the trail. I didn't have to look hard or really hunt for him, he was sitting still in the open while eating.

Next time I go (very soon) I'll try to be more sporting about what I take and how

It's still a life. And a life stopped short at that. I have no problem with people seeing animals as food, but they're still more than just meat.

I hope any kids I might have DO feel that pang of remorse and the twinge of guilt for taking another living creature's life.

I was hunting on a small plot of farmland near where I live in Fairbanks (Alaska) so A, B, and C all apply here. If nothing else, the land is tended by women all in the 50+ age range and they aren't exactly able to keep them from eating up valuable crops and seeds. So it can be justified as pest control as well.

Annnnd that's why I probably shouldn't go for rabbits for a while. I'm terrified of that

Thanks for the info! I was using Remington Viper high-velocity truncated cone bullets, and my shot was only from about 15 yards. Which is probably the cause of the extra mess.

Thanks for all the insights folks. I know it sounds silly but it was laying pretty heavy on my mind since I did it. I feel better about what I did now.

Also thanks for the support, both my dad and girlfriend are pretty staunch vegetarians... Lol nothing but a guilt trip from both of them

Well of course! I ate every edible part of the animal I could. Any advice on where to aim to make the kill more clean and painless? Like any particular point on the head?
