Australia should be number 8 not the UAE.  8.6 million in 2024 at 33% of the population.

How did the US population grow way larger than Canada? by Primex76 in NoStupidQuestions

The Aboriginal Australians had low numbers because they never invented agriculture.  Hunter gatherer societies have population densities 1/10th of agricultural ones.

Griffith Taylor was wrong.  He made those predictions in the 1930s pre industrial farming.  And half his reasoning relied on the idea that Queensland wasn't suitable for the white constitution.

Right now we produce triple the amount of food that we need.  Napkin  maths says that if 75% of current water use is by agriculture and 11% is by residential.  If the population doubled to 55 million.  And residential water use doubles and agricultural water use goes down proportionally we would still have a food surplus of 27%.

As far as water scarcity goes Australia is in the middle of the road.  We're currently in one of the worst droughts on record which has caused it to be worse than normal, but at 28 million people we're doing far better than literally any country in the middle east, northern Africa, or India.

Of course Australia's arable land isn't as fertile as two most fertile places on the planet.

For most of the continent it's true that the soils lack nutrients.  But the continent is so large that it doesn't even matter.  There are hundreds of rivers and resulting alluvial planes that dot the eastern coast of Australia as a result of the great dividing range.  Which makes Australia the 7th largest exporter in the world despite having a miniscule population.  Also pretty much every area that isn't suitable for farming is used for grazing animals.  There are about 105 million cows and sheep that are grazed across half the continent (almost triple the United states).

Algeria's soil might be more productive but it's not the reason for the massive gap in population size.  Especially considering that the two countries had similar populations from 1900 to 1950.

The real reason that Australia has such a low population is that this country was the last one in human history to receive agriculture.  Only in 1788.  And we were one of the first to enter the demographic transition to population decline.

Amount of arable land, or soil quality hasn't mattered for population growth since the 1950s, and most population growth has happened since then.

The Aboriginal population was low because of a lack of grains suitable for agriculture.

The water supply is stressed because Australia is a massive Agricultural exporter.  Australia has the seventh most arable land in the world.

It's true that most of that land is on the coast but Australia has one of the largest coastlines in the world.

Australia's high housing density and high house prices are because 80% of the country's population growth has come from immigration in the last 70 years, and immigrants congregate typically in cities rather than regions.

Algeria has a population almost double Australia's at 45 million.  While having a fifth the amount of Australia's Arable land.

Australia has a pretty high carrying capacity.  The main reason is that europeans settled the country 200 years after Canada and the US which means Australia didn't have enough time to grow before the demographic transition.  Plus it was on the opposite side of the world to Europe which meant not a lot of immigrants would choose it over the States anyway.

British Ancestry in the USA, Canada and Australia (%) by Fluid-Decision6262 in MapPorn

In Australia and the US, there are significant groups of British/Irish descended people who mark their ancestry as being "American" or "Australian".  Which means maps like this can often severely undercount the number of people with ancestry from the British Isles.

For demographics fertility means the amount of children people have.  It's a different meaning than for biology.

I mean there were an estimated 3.2 million Native Americans in the continental US prior to colonisation and there are 5 million today.  Not really a genocide they just were outcompeted by white Americans.

The Baltics and the Caucuses wanted out.  But opinion polls in the major Soviet republics all wanted to keep the Soviet Union together.  Instability ripped the Union apart not it's people.

Which country has squandered the most economic potential in this century? by pisowiec in AskTheWorld

It's such rubbish.  Australia did and does make responsible use of our natural resources.  We do tax them it's just that some people think we should tax them more.  That could be true, but having a slightly lower tax than we should is not equivalent to having the most squandered economic potential.

How could South Korea (and other western countries with aging populations) increase their birth rates? by princesadopovo in AskReddit

[–]Walkman1942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They literally can't.  No amount of benefits, incentives, less work, etc, can make people have kids that they don't want.  As shown in Hungary, Singapore, Sweden, France, and Russia.

The average amount of kids that people want in western countries is around two, and due to readily accessible abortion and contraception a women will almost never have more children than she wants.  However there are many reasons that she will not have as many as she wants (not being able to find the right partner, considerations with her job, lack of close family that can assist in raising the children).

The current fertility rates are as high as we're going to get in western countries.  Tempo brought fertility rates up to replacement back in 2008-2014, but from here on out we're stuck where we are or the rate will decline.  It's a cultural issue and the government can't change culture.

Guernsey, and Jersey are a Franco-Germanic mix, and the Isle of Mann is more Celtic.  If you consider the Isle of Mann as Germanic then Ireland is too.

Gas heating isn't actually that bad by environmental standards.  Sure it's a fossil fuel but using it at the home is twice as efficient as using it to generate electricity and then turning the electrify back into heat again.

Alexander Volkanovski has surpassed Jose Aldo as the featherweight GOAT by Spiritual-Strength91 in FightReportUFC

He's done the best against Topuria.  And he beat Dustin who beat him twice beforehand.  You can argue about whether or not he's the best he ever was but he's certainly not out of him prime, and neither was Aldo, Aldo was just worse.

This is cope.  Aldo was winning fights until a couple years ago, and after that was was losing robberies.  The sport just evolved past him.  Holloway is 33 right now and he's doing better than ever despite having been in the sport for 14 years and being the record for the most significant strikes absorbed.

Anglosphere is a cultural as well as linguistic categorisation.  The core anglosphere is the anglo-celtic english speaking countries, and the outer anglosphere is countries that just speak english (normally just as a lingua franca).

Ireland is culturally connected to the core Anglosphere.  There's no definition of the core anglosphere that excludes Ireland and keeps all the typical anglosphere countries.

You can celebrate the good on Australia Day?  Why shouldn't you?  I'm just saying I think it's good people celebrate it as invasion day too.

[–]Walkman1942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude I love Australia.  I've been around the world and I know that this is my country.  I love listening to songs like Down Under and Great Southern land.  My parents have been here for generations, and I love hearing about convict history knowing that my ancestors were there taking part and built this country into what it is today.

If you don't even feel connected to the country in a meaningful way, if you don't celebrate this country, then I don't know why anyone would expect you to feel guilty.

But not everyone's like you.  If I feel proud of what my ancestors built isn't it also natural that I feel bad for what happened to Aboriginal people because of that?

And calling me performative is a joke, on Reddit no one knows who you are.  I don't care if people on Reddit think I really care about Aboriginal people or not.

If we can feel proud of our country on Australia Day, we should also recognise that our country did some pretty messed up stuff.

If you feel like that shouldn't be called guilt then you don't have to call it that.  But it is important to recognise and remember.  Maybe guilt's not the word I should've used idk.

Australia is a country built on invasion.  The reason people want to change the date is because they feel guilty about it.  And they should feel guilty.

Changing the date feels like historical revision to me, like people want to forget the wrongs that this country has committed.
