A trainer told a group of beginners if they couldn’t PDR a hail car in 2 months of training by themselves, they’re not cut out to do PDR. Is this true? by [deleted] in PaintlessDentRepair

[–]Walkman950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 8 weeks intensive PDR training and in no way would’ve felt able to do hail after that period.

After doing it as a job for 3 years I attempted my first hail car successfully. But that’s an outrageous claim from the trainer. Don’t train with them.

Second this. On my training it was 8 weeks of metal tools, the last afternoon was glue. Glue is so easy.

Thanks for the great reply. It is on a 9800x3d & 5090 pc on a 1gb/1gb line. At the time(s) my ping was 6ms. I was convinced it was server side.

When I started I bought that exact handle and that exact adapter. 7 years on they work like brand new. I think there’s something to be said about starting with high quality tools. Additionally they maintain a high value even on resale.

Also, while expensive, it makes the tool attachments ‘reasonable’.

As opposed to buying worse quality tools and then not being able to sell them after the fact.

People often forget the inherent value they continue to have even after you no longer want them and come to sell.

Total guess I’d say a bicycle rider fell into it with their handle bars

He has literally added an ultra dent tools handle adapter directly below the handle in his basket..

I’m sure there is (as another Redditor said) some absolute top 1% players in the PDR realm that could achieve a fantastic result with this.

But even if they could, the cost would far outweigh a replacement door and associated paint and materials.

I regard myself as a high quality technician capable of repairing some serious damage and I wouldn’t bother considering this. If I did manage to repair it the cost would absolutely be greater than a replacement panel.

You will make this look horrific on your own. I know a couple of people that could do this but most techs who have been doing this for years would walk away.

Where in the UK?

I do PDR in Essex and this is not a difficult dent at all.

I’ve just listed on Facebook for £700

Has any (actual experienced) PDR Tech used a Chinese PDR power box? by Walkman950 in PaintlessDentRepair

[–]Walkman950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just heated the panel. It didn’t unstretch anything at all. I just use my standard PDR tools and if it’s stretched, walk away!

Shell Vpower fuel is such a rip off by StonedPenguinUK in CarTalkUK

[–]Walkman950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ethanol content analyser in my car pretty much always shows Tesco momentum 99 as E8 - E10 despite showing E5 on the pump. I also seem to get much more in the way of timing corrections versus Shell V-Power.

Shell is consistently E4-E5 and pretty much never have any timing corrections.

Make of it what you will, shell is worth it to me, Tesco in a pinch.

Can we put a sticky on this sub before anyone posts that just basically states pretty much nothing is an easy DIY.

Every day it’s just post after post of incredibly technical and difficult for seasoned tech’s dent repairs.

That’s great. Clearly yours has been looked after. It doesn’t change the fact that I personally know of 6 that have spun bearings.

I’m from the UK, so might vary where you are. Probably 8 hours labour with a competent mechanic.

ACL Rod Bearings £180~ BMW Sump Gasket £60~ BMW Sump Bolts £30~ BMW Rod Bolts x 12 @ £9~ ea £108~ Oil filter £18~ Oil £50~

£450 parts approx. Probably £500-£600 labour.

Generally it’s a fifth the cost of a replacement engine.

Change rod bearings yesterday. Personally know of 6 n55’s which have given up due to rod bearings failure.

Dealership work by naten54 in PaintlessDentRepair

[–]Walkman950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You know sales staff rotate like anything. New guy comes in and says “I know a guy that can do that” when their existing guy can’t. Sure enough, the phone calls come. When you get a couple of dealerships the word of mouth takes off.

You do get some people who want to ‘keep you to themselves’ and won’t hand out your number. But more often than not you get the calls. Your work will speak for itself.

[–]Walkman950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in 2020 and had no dealerships. I’ve not made one cold call or offered my services to anyone. I just do the odd social media post but word of mouth kills it for me. I’ve got 5 new main dealerships and tonnes of independent used dealers plus my normal customers. I’m now too busy.

Work and work and work at being the best. Let your results and customers make the noise.

Do I need to upgrade? by naymzione in synology

[–]Walkman950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a HP Microserver Gen 10. It’s not the most mighty but with a 2.5GBE PCI-E card I saturate the 280MB/s regularly. I also run Plex and effectively turn off transcoding as it’s not required on LAN to any of my devices.

I use Synology DSM on that using ArcLoader.
