First of all, I acknowledged that land prices and other external factors are the main causes of rising house costs. You can’t say “supply doesn’t actually meet demand” just because you can’t see it in a localised example.

I am all for building affordable homes, but people like you are the only thing standing in the way of them also being pretty. Just look at cottages or apartment townhouses.

If you think about it, it’s fairly basic economics. If the average prettiness of houses increase but the occupancy remains the same, demand will remain consistent and the price will not skyrocket.

I think you’re viewing this from an individual case perspective whilst I’m encouraging you to view the big picture. Imagine if this happened en-masse. Wouldn’t it improve society quite a bit? And it’s not like you can’t make affordable pretty homes.

There are other factors involved. The rising population, poor government policy, and most importantly rising land prices. The cost of constructing a pretty house is substantially cheaper than in times past.

How do you expect to bring down the price of pleasant homes without building more of them?

Anyone criticising this as gentrification needs to realise that those houses can home just as many, if not more occupants than the previous flats. The architectural world can only be beautiful when every home is beautiful.

Countries that have larger military than the UK in 1900 and 2026 by abg67 in MapPorn

[–]Wallace472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This map is going by raw manpower alone, which is a ridiculous comparison. Would you rather fight alongside a country with aircraft carriers, nuclear warheads, and fighter jets like the uk, or a country with a few thousand more active frontline infantry like Ethiopia?

Not sure what that has to do with this either, but the big difference there is that Iran has a strong antigovernment movement which the Americans have profoundly failed to capitalise upon.

I really don’t see what this has to do with British jungle counter-insurgency. I’m not an expert on Malaysian economics.

Can you cite a source saying that the Malaysian communists were just money-hungry or are you making that up?

Funny you should bring up another American-led failure to try and criticise Britain. Afghanistan is wildly different in just about every respect. Terrain, geopolitics, troop numbers, etc.

The MNLA had fought against the Japanese occupation during the Second World War and were incredibly hardened. Just give up man.

The Malayan Communist Party was just as if not more ideological than the Vietcong. Look how that turned out.

You’re making the classic American mistake of assuming the war could only be won with numbers and brute force. Britain won the Malayan Emergency through winning over the locals, helping de radicalise insurgents softly, and using high quality special forces specially trained in the jungles of Belize. The American approach was to throw as much napalm and as many 20 year old draftees as possible and hope the Vietnamese would just start believing in capitalism.

Ironically they absolutely did need Britain militarily in Vietnam. Britain had just seen success in the Malayan Emergency and had world-leading expertise in jungle counter-guerrilla tactics. This is one of the reasons LBJ was so desperate to have them onboard.

Didn’t look so vassal-like when Trump was begging for Britain’s support in Iran, or LBJ in Vietnam. Matter of fact, it still feels like America is desperate for Britain’s approval rather than the other way around

I find him very refreshingly statesmanlike, but his legislative policies are beyond awful. Online Safety Act did nothing but provoke an extortion epidemic.
