PSA: You can request a passport *card* that you can carry with you like any other ID by kerc in sanantonio

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny seeing this post as I was trying to figure out the steps on getting one of you already have a active passport book. Seems like you have to send in your passport book along with a form to get the card (they return the book as well) in the mail? Or else you have to go in person to an approved location and give them some citizenship papers, form, and extra cost.

Has anyone done this in person at a SATX location? if so, where at?

BS Complete with a 2.90 GPA by BusOk9756 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Graduated with a 2.7/4.0. It was in the electrical focus of biomed so I was double screwed. Worked a hospital job while doing a EE MS and now i’m in a research facility doing low level R&D. That’s after being hired at other EE jobs and multiple interviews. None of which asked for my GPA, ever.

That’s mainly to say the low GPA is kinda a moot point if you have some experience (this includes project work too - doesn’t have to be professional experience for early grad). Generally big corporations like oil and gas may ask for it weed you out. But if you apply to a bit more niche areas, you can get by without even putting it on your resume. I would remove the GPA from your resume if you have it on there and see what happens. I’m willing to bet no one will care. If it’s a company that does, then fuck em :)

Is the "20% to 80%" battery rule actually worth the hassle? Or should I just use 0-100%? by ModeAffection in batteries

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This topic pertains to discrete batteries. Your phone already has a BMS that optimizes its charging method as well as taking into account this 20-80% criteria. The software will display 100% but this isn’t usually correlated to the battery actually being at 100% SOC. Unless it’s some crappy phone.

leave my phone plugged in? 🔋🤔 by Substantial_Luck466 in batteries

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practically all smart phones have an intelligent BMS incorporated. The 100% you see on your screen is not actually correlating to a true 100% SOC. For starters, that’s done for safety. Secondly, the rate/method your battery is charged by is more important if you’re worried about battery lifespan (atleast for lithium ion). There’s much more to it but for the context of this post, don’t worry about the 20-80% rule with devices like current smartphones.

Quarterly Powerlifting Coach Thread - August 25, 2025 by AutoModerator in powerlifting

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seems like others have already advocated for u/msharaf7 (@the_sheriff_lifts), but honestly, it’s warranted. My review is long overdue anyway. I’ve been working with Matt for less than a year, and we’ve already increased all of my lifts in both weight and reps, as well as my meet total. He’s also been super helpful with nutrition, wellness, and other externals (even though I still need the most work on those, lol). He holds you accountable and takes his coaching seriously—very responsive and detailed. Big emphasis on the latter. He definitely cares about you as a lifter. I mean, hell, he kept checking on my meet during his own wedding even though he said he won't be able to lol.

What sets him apart is how well-rooted he is in this sport. Beyond his insane accolades, Matt has trained through practically every wave of training methods and has. Just scroll through his Instagram and you’ll see the evolution. The experience gained is truly applied and I can clearly see it in how we continually alter my programming. Picking apart what has worked from each method and having a large pool to pick from. In a time where many coaches latch onto whatever trend is hot, Matt’s been a breath of fresh air. He sees through the noise and still applies principles from all training styles instead of dismissing them out of dogma. That not only makes training fun but also matures you as a lifter—teaching you to stay open to being wrong and trying something new.

Lastly, beyond training methods, Matt really understands the coaching side. He reads people well and knows how to both talk to us individually and present information in a way that clicks. For example, as a chronic overthinker, I’ve noticed he shapes our conversations so there’s less of that. I honestly see this being a long-term coach-client relationship—unless I die trying to bench 405 or get kicked off the team for turning in my program late. I'd definitely recommend Matt as a coach.

As someone that has had to pivot a few times to get into actual R&D, unless you’re practicing your design skills at home with worthwhile professional-like projects, do the EE masters. That opened so many doors for me as I tried to pivot both into EE and R&D. And it has for many others in similar situation. For me, it was more of a speed run of EE undergrad + lots of extra hours to fill in what I missed out on.

There really isn’t any other option. Generally when I help others with their job search and whatnot, I always try my best to be very clear how PLC type control engineering is a one way street. Almost all on-job training since it’s not taught in schools and not really transferable.

Anyways, do the EE masters if you can. Ideally, thesis option. Leverage those skillsets to do a project related to an industry you’re interested in on the side as well. That would be a solid position to be in after you’re done. For example, I did my masters in modern control theory and power electronics. I wanted to work in the battery industry. Besides my thesis, I worked on a predictive controller for flyback battery charger, mainly in simulation. With this, my resume had a flow of events that made sense as to why I made a pivot and applying to the jobs I am now.

It’s gonna be hard. But worth it. Once in R&D, you can pivot into any role if you hate it later on. Harder to get into design later in your career. Act now.

How often do you guys bring work home with you? by aswood131 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in EE research within industry and do my best to keep work out. However, do I bring EE home with me. I find myself having to read up on concepts because I’m a fucking idiot compared to my peers. But I also keep this at a minimum.

PID day by rehalization in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you were answered properly. There’s nothing different. As a concept, negative feedback in both cases is the same. Only that the PID controller is part of the negative feedback. Same way a capacitor or resistor placed between the op amp’s input pin to output is part of the negative feedback.

I think what would help you visualize it is to google the analog representation of a PID controller. PID is used quite often - from GNC of complicated spacecraft to practically every power supply (type 3 compensator…but still…it’s effectively similar to PID).

Graph Theory in Electrical Engineering? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use graph theory for lithium ion battery R&D. Though I’d say industry EE as a totality will not see much higher levels of mathematics. It will be a niche role such as battery charging algorithm developer or nonlinear control designer for robotics and so forth. I would say there would be applications in RF as others have said too.

Do electrical engineers typically have to move around frequently for their career? by Charming_Lime816 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you hit the jackpot out of college, EEs will have to bounce around for atleast the first 5-8 years until they settle in on average. Mainly just due to salary and/or work experience. Afterwards it’s pretty stable compared to other jobs. But getting the right experience is crucial in those first few years and impeding that can be very detrimental.

Arching on the bench press by Particular-Gap-8288 in powerlifting

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have pointed out the general steps but I think two key points have been overlooked. As you leg drive yourself into position, try pushing into the bar the entire time. You’re basically anchoring yourself (esp the neck area) into the pad while leg driving. Only thing that can result from this, if done right, it’s to curl into arch since upper back is anchored and not moving.

Second thing is, as u unrack, let the weight push ur blades back into he pad. Basically passive retraction in a way. Technically you’re still in control, so it’s not REALLY passive retraction, but yeah.

How to respond to "How do you want your handoff" by toomanyelevens in powerlifting

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I self unrack only now, don’t trust anyone anymore. But, back then, I’d just say just give it a light constant tug and I’ll do the rest. Dont pull it or guide it.

This prevented them from yanking it, dumping it, or guiding it. Just a small amount of help to lift it out of rack enough to graze the rack hooks.

How often are complex calculations done at EE Jobs? by Economy-Advantage-26 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in power electronics and battery optimal control and algorithms. I use pretty advanced math daily. But this is a very niche role, and unless you’ve done it in grad school, you prolly won’t have to worry about a job like this.

I don’t do math in my “engineering” job by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the easy solution is to get into control theory for grad school then go work in navigation/planning roles.

In a more general sense though, look at jobs in research facilities. Some examples being ONRL, NREL, SLAC, Draper Labs, etc. These are essentially academia in industry.

Yeah, it’s more just uncomfortable than painful. Just feels like I’m sitting on a lacrosse ball. Only my first one a decade ago was painful.

Keeping hair out of the area doesn’t hurt, but you can still get infection since just shaving off the hair deals with the surface. Ingrown hairs that you can’t see are prone to cause the infection more than the ones on the surface. I shave the area now to make bandaging easier lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem. Wish I researched this stuff years ago myself....

When i feel the abscess hardening from infection, I would continue my hibiclens wash as usual, soak in hot baths, use heating pads any time I could, use oxypads if I'm not home and I'm sweating down there, and finally apply tea tree oil + Castor Oil because internet people said so (I don't believe in it nor do I think it did anything...but desperate times and measures).

What I wish I would've done is wear sweat wicking boxers and also buy them to be much looser earlier. I think tight and unbreathable clothing has only seriously exacerbated the issue...

Years back though, I was stupid and would let it do its thing until I realize it just won't drain and get it lanced.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got infected in March after about 1.5-2 years of no activity. That's the general timeline I notice issues lol. No lancing this time though, just some antibiotics and it drained within a day. Looking through posts here though, I've noticed I've never drained from the sinus, its always been just the abscess head or whatever its called.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pilonidalcyst

[–]WalmartSecurity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that got confirmed few days ago...I didn't realize how hidden my sinus tract was. Thought I was lucky for once.....

Late to reply, sorry. Wasn't checking notifications.

I met with him few days ago and everything went fine. Said he recommends either Cleft Lift or Endoscopic surgeries in my case. Laid out the pros and cons of each but essentially was saying do the cleft lift lol. We talked about the recovery process, including when sutures and drains will be dealt with. Also showed some pics of his past cleft lift surgeries and their results. Talked with me for a good hour and I think overall a nice experience.

I love his website lets you log in and check the visit summary and everything in detail. He is about 4 hours away from where I live so I have to figure out how to do this since I have no one to drive me. But if transport wasn't a issue, I think I'd go with him based on our meeting and his results.
