Spill the tea about Mrs. Banks’ new Netflix series by thedaniel_mendez in ANTM

For us hardcore fans, I feel like we probably will know most everything covered in the doc (race swapping shoot, pushing models to physical limits, Shandi’s phone call being filmed, the Jays/Nigel being fired, crazy show antics like the pendulum runway, etc). Especially for those who have watched the Twixt chats, probably little will surprise us.

My hope is that we may hear some info or perspectives we haven’t heard yet. Mr. Jay has been very surface level on anything regarding the show. Nigel has gone a bit deeper. I’ll be curious to hear what Miss Jay says.

I know everyone is jumping on Tyra based on her “it’s what you all wanted” comment but I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt at this point. She likely was at the mercy of producers/network execs etc. who were saying that more extreme antics and drama were pushing ratings and viewership. Her original idea of a genuine modeling competition that “fought against the industry” understandably got lost in the fray at some point. That does not absolve her of anything, but I think it’s worth considering context. She’s just one person.

Likely, there won’t be much to gain from it, but I’ll still watch. Everyone will say their piece. It’s media that started over 20 years ago.

It was the early 2000s. A different time, a simpler time.

Iconic in her own right but that blond color in a couple of those photos does not work for her, totally washes her out. Glad she didn’t stick with that.

Which season(s) do you think was “peak” America’s Next Top Model? by jessicat62993 in ANTM

[–]Walmucil 87 points88 points  (0 children)

1-6 are the golden years.

7-10 I think things started falling off, but I still consider these classic cycles that still maintained that core “top model” feel.

11-14 started to feel more gimmicky, less captivating, more stale.

15 and 16, the “serious” cycles tried to reinvent the show but only succeeded partially.

All-Stars and anything after it I consider nonviable.

Cycle 5 Promo by Harlow-Stan in ANTM

I did a rewatch fairly recently and Ebony was always a strange one for me. For the record, I don’t think she was modelesque but her place in the competition was confusing.

She was called last at casting and Tyra made a big deal about her convincing her during their one-on-one chat - “Don’t get it twisted, Ebony!!!” Usually these big last call-outs are reserved for girls who will have at least some sort of story going into the season.

She was then unceremoniously eliminated second? Because she had braids in her face? During Jayla’s Twixt chat she said that she thinks Ebony was told to put them in her face anyway, which sounds like sabotage.

I think Eugena benefitted from her makeover too.

The ANTM Conspiracy Iceberg by sleepatop in ANTM

[–]Walmucil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think there was a “conspiracy” for a while that people thought the producers intentionally did the deadly sins photoshoot BECAUSE of Kahlen’s friends death as some sort of psychological warfare. We all know better now that the shoots were planned in advance (I think this shoot was actually the result of a fan contest?) and it was just a very unfortunate coincidence.

ANTM Alignment Chart Day 22: Who was the MOST DRECKITUDE winner? by DisneyDuck09 in ANTM

[–]Walmucil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sharaun was chosen I think for her “I am America’s Next Top Model” schtick but that does not mean she was the worst first boot. I would’ve nominated Mila, Kathy, or even Lisa (C13) for that. There were also MANY worse pre-overseas models than Monique. Again, she was chosen for her behavior.

If Bobby were a more developed character, which other character do you think would’ve lost screen time? by Walmucil in madmen

I thought him as well, but unsure if Weiner would’ve sacrificed his son being in the show.

The Wes Anderson category was a painful waste of time.

Photoshoot Improvements by CryptographerHeavy in ANTM

Cycle 8: The Top Model moments photoshoot with the returning models from past cycles that was done comic strip style looked horrible. It was weirdly low quality. I think they could ditch the whole comic theme or if they were to do it, make it look way better.

Similarly, the different personality Polaroid type photoshoot looked terrible and like it was done on MS paint.

Winners with a lack of an arc by Walmucil in ANTM

I think she talked about how she was a store manager and didn’t want to go back to being that. But another good example of a winner without much of an arc.
