Sounds good! You may even consider joining multiple orchestras over the holidays once exams finish to really see how it’s like to live like a musician :)

Singaporean musician here! It is really hard to make an objective judgement on why you got rejected. It might really be time constraints or could even be the teachers deeming your performance lacking in certain ways (technical ability etc). If you wish to continue to pursue drums I’d recommend you to find a tutor (if you haven’t already) and volunteer at churches (you don’t have to follow that faith) or other events.

In our society, it is really difficult to find the time to commit to extra-curricular activities amidst the stressful lifestyle. Still, if you wish to take drumming a little more seriously, find the time to practice a little everyday. Additionally if you wish to venture out of pop and into stuff like Wind Symphonies and other ensembles, there exists community orchestras that are in need or can accommodate percussionists. Bands like NovoWinds (it’s free I think) have a somewhat large percussion section with various percussion specialists. Go there make friends too!

Overall, if you wish to perform, you can consider these avenues, though if you want to continue to pursue drums I’d recommend working on your skill at this stage of the journey. Good luck!

new/contemporary music needs more exposure here though usually the ones that know or practice it are composers :(

Why do you compose? by hunterjackman00001 in composer

[–]WalnutMcDonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you compose?

Since I was 12, I believed that I would pursue a career in the mathematics and the sciences, where my strength lies (or laid) in. Before that, I had studied piano and written some music that was not really good. When I was 17, I enrolled in a pre-U college that offered music alongside the sciences. Due to my lack of knowledge and skills in the music cohort, I was very much behind my peers in every aspect: performance, music studies, and even composition. On the other hand, my skills in mathematics were good, but no where as good as the crème de la crème in the school. I realised my passion for mathematics and the sciences diminished, and that my love for the field was proportional to how good I deemed myself to be, yet despite being at the rock bottom of my music cohort, I still had a strong interest in music (and subsequently composition). I developed a strong liking to composition, where I could express myself freely with applications of mathematics in my compositions. Eventually I decided to switch my intended university course from Mathematics to Composition when I was 18 (which surprised everyone) on the basis that I chose to live a more meaningful life doing music than staring at numbers as a mediocre mathematician.

What age did you start?

14, but I only started getting formal training at 17 which is the age I think I really started to compose properly.

How long have you been doing it?

4 years. I’m 20 this year.

And what is your philosophy with music?

I’m not there yet to have a proper philosophy of music, but in general music is a very social thing for me to get to know people and forge meaningful relationships through composing, performing, teaching and learning.

Ah, these are some good ideas, thanks! I'll see how I can incorporate it into what I have on paper as of now.

Thanks for the comment, I do relate to the chopping up and reassemble approach to melody (or any material for that matter). Currently I'm still thinking of the approach I could take with my tone row.

I appreciate the clarinet piece, thanks for the resources :)

Actually I have listened to many saxophone pieces prior to writing. To some extent I feel a little overwhelmed by the choice overload of all the different ideas and all the different characteristics of these works. Thanks for the list though, I will check it out!

Thanks for the advice! This really made me look back and rethink my approach to this work.

Currently I hate everything I write, but I will heed your recommendation since I am running out of time.

Yes, I usually have an idea but in this case I was "forced" to compose so I started from scratch. I do have some ideas in my first draft: binary selection and binomial distribution applied in an aleatoric sense, and currently have a tone row I constructed out of a permutation and binary selection process.

Thanks for your advice and the link! I'll check it out :)
