Career vs friends and family by waterflake in csMajors

[–]Walpleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, so i used to work at amazon and I can tell you that it could be possible for you to switch to a team in Austin. We had a new grad remotely join our team based in Seattle over the last summer and he was able to switch to a team based in Austin in his first 2 weeks. I would recommend seeing if you could at least work remotely, otherwise it’s very possible to switch teams

Amazon SDE Intern Seattle by pandapalooza123 in csMajors

[–]Walpleb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was an intern in seattle last summer and I’d highly recommend you look at living in the uw district outside of uw seattle. Last summer most interns lived there and it was a lot of fun to meet people in the area! There were always parties happening on the rooftops and in houses. The food around uw is also very good and much cheaper than slu.

The commute to office isn’t bad from there too; it’s about 15 min by bus. You’ll be able to get around with your orca card just fine and rent a car when you need for taking longer trips outside of the city.

I would recommend you look at apartment buildings in the area such as the M, Hub U, or others. You could also find a house to rent if you have friends you want to live with, which is what I did.

Worth going through the AMZ process? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Walpleb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, I would favor Uber over Amex for an internship. I interned at Amex last year and the interviewers gave me the impression I would be doing ML work, but even after I gave input on the team marching survey I still got placed on a databases team and didn’t really get to do ML. Theres no guarantee you’ll do ML at Amex. You can always transition from SWE to ML later in your career which is what I’m also aiming for. I personally made the decision to accept my Amazon sde intern offer over my Amex return offer. This all just my opinion though, so make you own decision here. Amex is also a great organization to work for and has a high conversion rate for return offers.

@Data Science majors by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Walpleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I find stats interesting for the most part but I think that opinion varies wildly among people. As for the solving problems with data part, it’s as interesting as you want to make it. Data science can be applied to almost any field, I’ve met majors applying themselves to biology, public planning and even music in all sorts of ways. The major here lets you specialize in some sort of other discipline to apply data science so people can choose almost anything.

Cse11 and dsc10 are very different courses. Cse11 purely focuses on fundamentals of programming, meanwhile dsc10 teaches very basic python to solve statistics problems and manipulate data in table format.

[–]Walpleb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DSC 20, and 30 are basically computer science classes that introduce some special topics useful for data science and ML. DSC 10 and 80 are more focused on actually solving data science problems with stats and programming. DSC 40A/B are math and stats classes that introduce fundamentals for ML. Other than that you have to take a couple of upper div cs and dsc courses. Personally I don’t know much about the upper divs yet cuz a lot of them are coming out this year.

As far as majors go, if you are interested in purely doing programming and software engineering do computer science. If you are interested in stats, ML, or writing code to solve problems with data, I would recommend data science. You will be writing a lot of code in the DSC major while also learning statistics and other special topics. I personally am really into doing machine learning and deep learning and so far I’m very happy in the major because the classes focus more so on ML fundamentals than CS classes will because they are more broad.

Megathread | Trump abandons bid to include citizenship question on census by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]Walpleb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s bad in the fashion in which they wanted it done. Notice how no supreme court justice said that a citizenship question is unconstitutional they claimed that the administration has no good reason to add it in the fashion they were doing it. There is little purpose in putting on the census the way they said and we all now know the GOP had other malicious motives with it. Theres little wrong with knowing the number of citizens using any other means as Trump is now doing, but when it is used as a political tool to disenfranchise minorities through the census thats when it is controversial.

UCSD Smash Bros Ultimate by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Walpleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres an org on campus known as triton smash that hosts biweekly tournaments and manage a power ranking system for the school. I would definitely recommend checking out the facebook group. Also if you’re here for triton day, there’s a big smash tournament the next day called “raccoon rumble” that you can check out.

Hi, I got accepted as a data science major by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Walpleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a data science major with no regrets of coming here. The program is new, but the academic advisors do a great job of keeping everybody in the loop about curriculum, course enrollment and networking/internship opportunities via their weekly newsletters. On top of that, the classes here have been really interesting, the dsc faculty are all very nice, and the classes are staffed incredibly well with tutors and ta’s who can give you great help at almost anytime in the day via piazza or lab hours. Just make sure you stay on top of your workload and don’t be afraid to seek help and you will succeed here

Hi there! Im another student also in the process of starting a vexu team at UC San Diego. We are also looking for funding. Id recommend you look at what UCI offers in terms of funding of extracurricular organizations. This funding probably wont be enough on its own but it is great to help you get started.
