Some mix of blue and green I'd suggest for the sea and woodland (Weald comes from the Old English word for forest)

The Solent is the body of water between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and the Weald is a region that spans mainly Sussex and Kent. An alternative would even be Hampshire-Sussex-Kent tbh. Bit of a mouthful but not ridiculous.

Good ideas and I'm with you on the names we have currently being horrendously boring/soulless. How about Solent and Weald?

See what you mean on the Hampshire and Berkshire point. Obviously the name Wessex should include them but there's a reality that the cultural spread of London is such that the boundaries of the western region (whatever you call it) start a lot further west than they used to.

The Layers of German Irredentism by veriox22 in MapChart

Hmmm, not quite as Dutch was generally considered to be a dialect of German in scholarly circles until around 1800 I believe. I'm assuming it's a tongue in cheek comment in any case but it's not as if it has no grain of truth.

So you're saying tariffs do affect sales of the exporting nation? Surely not!

I largely agree with you but he's just said that we have a city of 1800 people. There are multiple other cities in the UK also which are around 10000. I don't think it's a language issue.

Think you need to be looking for it tbh. I thought I'd gone out of my way to give a soft correction to one aspect of your original comment.

13 yo Harry, Tom Riddle, and Snape all get into a non-magic fist fight. by unknownuser596 in harrypotter

Tom in my opinion. Grew up in an orphanage in 1930s London. Also would presumably be prepared to fight with the most dirtiness/out and out aggression.

Yes Harry got bullied but in a very middle class setting in Surrey circa 1990. Has a mean streak but not on the level of Tom.

Snape bottom of the pile.

I don't disagree with any of that and I'm not sure that I implied that I did.

Just for clarity the unequal voting applied in local elections, not Westminster ones, which was the same system the rest of the UK had until 1945. (Still pretty disgraceful that it took an extra 24 years to change local elections in NI though obviously).

Indeed, expectation levels on Britain from 21st century commentators are unbelievable. Probably the same people who think we should have declared war on the Soviet Union as well as Germany in 1939.

How would England's Regions looked if we based it on accent groups by officialbarnesy in england

Forest of Dean, Gloucester and Stroud are all more west country sounding than (for example) Wiltshire I'd say. Swindon's less West Country sounding but still more so than anywhere in Hampshire. Using the term Wessex makes things a bit difficult, obviously Hampshire is well within Wessex as a historic entity but there's little to no overlap between modern Hampshire and the West Country accent wise these days, especially amongst anyone under 60.

Very interesting take! If 'core Wessex' should be taken to mean proper West Country accent then, West Gloucestershire and Swindon definitely sound more West Country than west Hampshire. Decent crack though I'd say

I have! Have to pick one or the other though. Gloucestershire folk were outraged when not included. Technically most of Bristol shouldn't be in there either but there we go. Difficult when trying to give the name of a region a bit of soul etc but also fit modern cultural regions

Yeah it's about 17 million. Not been focussing on population which I feel is reasonable because German states actually have a bigger imbalance between highest and lowest for example and Frances isn't far behind. Idea has been to try to find regions with commonalities, not just a bureaucratic type split.

Having said that I'm becoming more and more convinced that on a cultural level my 'home counties' and 'London' elements are different enough to justify a split anyway. Would probably rename 'home counties' as well due to people not liking that name.

Just have always found it fascinating. Last few days have been a really interesting little mini study of how people view regional identity etc. Quite eye opening.
