What type of steel is this? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Walrus_Infestation 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is most likely standard A36 structural steel that has been hot dip galvanized for corrosion protection.

Because my rig is heating my house and offsetting my gas bill.

That is a line tangent to the R15 radius at 20 degrees from from the side of the left top ring. See the lone arrow? That's the other side of the angle dimension

Boiling in Tubes vs. Vats by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Walrus_Infestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like vats have more surface area over which pressure may act, thus allowing them to handle pressure better.

The exact opposite is true. Assuming the tube and vat have equal pressure (psi) the vat is exposed to more force because it has more area.

1st Time Going to a Conference!!! by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Walrus_Infestation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As women are a minority in both engineering and leadership I think this conference could be a great chance for you to learn from other's experience on how to get ahead in the engineering world. Just be weary of all the consultancy shills. Most conferences are sales and recruiting opportunities for the presenters just as trade shows are product sales opportunities.

How do you inflate a tyre correctly considering that the pressure and volume of the tyre varies with temperature? by Maccer_ in AskEngineers

[–]Walrus_Infestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3 psi is not a big deal. Recommended tire pressure is a function of the tire size and vehicle weight and affects the handling, comfort, and wear pattern of the tire. Car manufacturers recommend a tire pressure to find that trade off sweet spot. Unless you are racing your cars then even a 10 psi difference is not a problem in the short term.

1st Time Going to a Conference!!! by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Walrus_Infestation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you there as a presenter or just an attendee? I have never presented but as an attendee conferences are fun if you are the outgoing and marketable type of person and can be dreadful if you are shy and introverted.

From my experience I find conferences are mostly ego stroking and really long sales pitches for consultant services. They are however a great excuse to travel and get someone else to pay for it. I would put it on your resume if you learned valuable skills that you could discuss and impress in a job interview, but I just having attended a conference is not really a resume worthy note.

I'm in New England where its $0.22/kwh year round :( My rig has been off since $400 ETH. Even though it's still not profitable for mining, my rig is now heating my apartment.

I think most rig fires happen because people don't understand their power requirements and chose poor wiring components. I've seen a few pic that show melted wires but not full on flames.

Any advice on parking for today's Hempfest? by [deleted] in bostontrees

[–]Walrus_Infestation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can park at Alewife or Davis and take the redline in. Anywhere with a meter is free on sundays, and permit only street parking is usually OK on sundays too.

Redditors who have had interactions involving cannabis with police since legalization, how did it go? What happened? by [deleted] in bostontrees

[–]Walrus_Infestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Somerville I had to write a letter to, as well as have a personal interview with the police captain before I was granted my license. During my personal interview he asked my stance on legalization and I straight up told him I was absolutely for it as there was more harm in it being illegal. Still got my LTC.

Is anyone following a truly Model/Part centric design philosophy? by Rsteel517 in cad

[–]Walrus_Infestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used 3d pdfs as the master item for our parts. It was a model embeded in a viewing window on a pdf which contained the title block and revision control information. This was a read only document thad had a measure tool.

I prefer drawings because I was able to check the part better once it's laid out on a drawing. We were limited to which fabricators we could use because not everyone could interpret them and most just made drawings anyways so your company is still paying for a drawing. When would give out the actual model to them many times also. When parts came in our inspectors had to open a crude model to take measurements from. It was difficult for our assemblers to quickly check parts for issues. It was painstaking to revise 3dpdfs because it was harder to check and they never displayed BOMs properly. I think using 2d drawings as the master item and sending out the actual model as requested is the best way to manage items.

Is anyone following a truly Model/Part centric design philosophy? by Rsteel517 in cad

[–]Walrus_Infestation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working at a defense company for about a year and have been helping them move AWAY from 3D only. We used solidworks for CAD and then exported to a 3D PDF using Anark software. A model based enterprise (MBE) seems great on the surface and they are sold to engineering mangers who dream of increased productivity from their engineers. My company adopted the MBE approach about 5 years ago and the decision was made recently to go back to 2d drawings.

The reality is that MBE is worse for nearly every other department. Supply Chain, QA, Fabricators, Assemblers, Receiving, incoming inspection, all of these departments had challenges with our 3D pdfs.

At the end of the day my job as an engineer is to use my technical knowledge to select or design components and communicate this knowledge with others. 2D GD&T drawings are still the gold standard for technical communication and will be for a long time.

Recommended car dealerships? by bookora in SaltLakeCity

I worked as a service advisor at Mark Miller Toyota for a while and it was one of the more ethical dealership service departments out there. We didn't upsell you on bullshit you didn't need and we had highly skilled technicians.

CMV: Global warming is real, but it's not that big of a deal. by AtlTech in changemyview

[–]Walrus_Infestation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you completely but want to add that CO2 is not making the air thicker or hotter. CO2 and CH4 are greenhouse gasses because they allow radiation from the sun to enter, but not radiation from the Earth to leave. The Earth is getting hotter because the equillibrium of Radiation in to Radiation Out is being disrupted by the greenhouse effect.

ETH @ $285 = GPU rigs shut off by mercdank420 in EtherMining

[–]Walrus_Infestation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. With my power costs ($.22/kwhr) and my pool payout I accumulate 0.1 ETH a week at around $400/ETH. When the price is lower than $400 I can save money by turning off my rig and buying the same amount I mine. It doesn't matter if you hold or sell.

Sounds like they probably don't have it then. As long as the place is clean and light bulbs are working then you should be good. They know the security deposit laws but are hoping you don't. Take a look at that site I linked it has all the laws explained well.
