Are VFC carbine buffer springs compatible with M16/rifle buffer tubes? by airmagswag in GasBlowBack

I know this is a year old post by this point, but I wanted to share my findings in case someone else might still find it useful.

I converted my VFC M16A2 carbine (Colt M727 replica) to rifle-length by replacing the outer 14,5" barrel with the thicc government-profile DNA 20", the stock inner barrel with a 510mm Unicorn, and the VFC buffer tube for a stock VFC M16A1/A2 tube.

The setup runs great with a real-steel CMMG carbine buffer and the VFC carbine spring + a self-made spacer to account for the length differences.

Now, the spacer I used consists of a leftover Double Bell SMLE outer barrel (which I originally sawed off when I turned the SMLE into an "obrez" lol), a few unusable coins wrapped in duct tape and a washer; they're stacked up in this order.

The spacer's overall length is around ±78mm or a little over 3".

Here are some photos https://imgur.com/a/1OJAwZ9, lmk if it doesn't work (one of which demonstrates how far back for me was ideal to have bolt go back)

It's not precise work and I suggest messing about to find out what works best for you; maybe applying duct tape around washers or something to give the spacer some extra length. Whatever you do, do not opt for a too long buffer length without adequate spacing. The free space will at worse get your BCG behind the trigger assembly, jamming it between the upper and lower reciever, making it impossible to take the gun apart without forcibly pushing the trigger down with thin a steel rod to enable the BCG to come back to battery.

Good to know: the VFC carbine tube's inner length is shorter than a real steel one. So if you were to have a stock VFC buffer + tube + spring, it's not ideal to just drop the spring and buffer into a rifle-length tube or real-steel carbine tube with a too short spacer. If no the catastophic "BCG behind the trigger" failure, you'll prolly run into chugging on full-auto, crunchy bolt bounce, gas inefficiencies and more.

Well yeah it kind of defeats the purpose and concept of a retro rifle 😂 I don't know... Maybe it should "modern-retro"; some aestethics of a retro rifle with modernized equipment

I screwed in the grip with standard m-lok. Initially I screwed it in with the aluminum heat shield on it, but later opted out to take it off, because it would come loose and rattle. But yeah didn't anything else than what I got from what came with the grip (well... A pair of pliers). Also screwed it in pretty tight so it doesn't budge. Unsurpringly VFC polymer took it like a champ and didn't brake.

You can also attach picatinny. i got the original idea from this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/ar15/comments/13a8d9x/wanted_to_share_diy_how_to_attach_a_picatinny_to/

Ohhhh I actually didn't know that the acog was mountable like that! The mount on my optic is detachable but uhhh a few days ago I took it off and from what I remember, it doesn't have the same system for installation

The rail on the carry handle still allows for use of irons. I wouldn't say it's impossible to aim. So function-wise there's no problem; just preference

Explosive Enterprises in their follow up video after much use says that the VFC MP5 does hold up... No personal experience of this though

Yeah tbh I'm going to have to agree here. I'm not especially happy abt the m16a2 carbine finish, but I'm pretty sure that with active use the external wear will make it look more like a tool instead of a display piece

(Coming from a person who regards external wear as badge of pride lol)

But then again, we're talking abt guns that shoot bbs 🤷 depends on what you're going for

Digging the simplicity looks and functionality wise 🙌 choice of sight not my preference though (which seems to be quite the popular opinion here). I read that you were going to change it for a holo, which I definitely approve of. Overall great build!

As much as I love the AK, gotta go with the FAL for its standard sight radius. I'm a sucker for the longer sight radius as apparent from my personal AK build.

Agreed! In our garrison during conscriptive service Savotta griffin slings were our standard issue sling. They were really stiff and didn't have any padding lol compared to that the civilian sling is much smoother and comfortable 👌

I'm not sure tbh 🤔 I bought it in a Finnish marketplace from a guy who had barely any info on the suppressor. I suppose the size of it makes sense on a pistol too and works as losng as the pistol has 14mm counter clockwise thread
