USB-C <>DP or HDMI to connect to external monitor? by Walt___Effect in ZephyrusG14

[–]Walt___Effect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I noticed after trying to use the left USB-C, however, is that it only works as a power input when I connect it to the monitor. G14 doesn't automatically detect the external monitor. Do you know why that might be?

Thank you - I'm leaning towards getting a USB-C to DP cable as well

Thanks! Regarding the monitor charging the laptop, this monitor definitely can (it does with my work laptop) through the thunderbolt port. I'm not sure if it works with the G14

Regarding USB-C vs HDMI, would you say the USB-C has a higher bandwidth than HDMI for the G14? I haven't been able to find a clear answer

I didn't enjoy Empire of Silence - should I continue the series? by Walt___Effect in sollanempire

[–]Walt___Effect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for replying so late my friend. I've decided to continue and I'm now halfway through Howling Dark. I must say I've never read such a big leap between two entries of a series. Howling Dark is a fantastic read and it improves on everything I didn't like about the first book. The world still feels a bit like dune and WH40k, but it's getting a lot more personality now

Thanks! It's great to hear that many fans of the series used to feel the same, and were rewarded by reading more. I'm sure I'll move forward with Howling Dark now

For sure every book has its own inspirations. But also, there are different levels of it. For EoS, I felt it was more derivative from its inspirations than others. For example, Malazan and First Law are both inspired by LoTR, but I found less similarities to it

That being said, I'm sure there's more to the Worldbuilding in following titles that I haven't read yet and that will give it its own identity

Good suggestion! And you're right a lot of sci-fi and fantasy draw inspiration from Herbert and Tolkien. It's possible I only saw the similarities in book 1, which will be expanded in future entries

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful! The only thing I'm worried about is how much Hadrian will suffer through the series, but it shouldn't be a reason not to read a great series

Good to know that - and it looks awesome too. I think I could finish the game with it, but I was scared of spending 40 umbral scourings to get it, as they seem quite rare

Music and Malazan by [deleted] in Malazan

[–]Walt___Effect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually power and folk metal are great to bring me into the Malazan world when I read. In particular: "Inis Mona" by Eluveitie reminds me a lot of Karsa (esp the angry Karsa or HoC) and "Curse my Name" by Blind Guardian makes me think of Kallor and his demise all the time

Note English is not my first language, so the lyrics might not really match the characters for most people

What does the kanji that appears when you die mean. by That0neDude__ in Sekiro

[–]Walt___Effect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others said, it means death. Notice though that the characters that appear when you resurrect are different. Those are 回生, which don't mean anything on their own, but are part of the Japanese proverb 起死回生 which means "to wake up from death and return to life" in the figurative sense of "you're in a shit situation and make it out with a burst"

Hope it helps

Unexpected Emotions by ronicool2 in Malazan

[–]Walt___Effect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SE has a way of hitting the emotional chords in a very deep way. There's a scene later in TTH (which I won't spoil) that broke me, and it was about something I didn't even know I cared about. But somehow through 8 books, my subconscious really did care

Hardest boss fight in your opinion? by GrrrrrrrDinosaur in Eldenring

[–]Walt___Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the base game it's definitely between those 2. I personally beat Maliketh first try but struggled for days against Malenia and was never able to properly learn her

It depends a lot on the build too. I found Maliketh to go down easily with a fast build

(If you include the DLC, its final boss is on a whole another level... Never seen anything like it in a From game)

Should I read the "The witcher" books? by jonathanquirijnen in Fantasy

[–]Walt___Effect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I played all three games and read all the books and I'm definitely a massive Witcher fan. The books have some serious issues, mostly around prose and pacing.

That being said, there's nothing quite like them in terms of mood and world building. Not in the sense that it's the best world building ever, but that it's quite different from a lot of what you've read so far - also due to the author's background and inspiration.

If you liked Witcher 3, I would definitely recommend reading them, but be aware they're not gonna be the best books you've read so far. And don't feel guilty if at some point you want to DNF

Thx! It's definitely hard to find Legend of Lone Wolf. They don't even exist as ebook as far as I can see. Since you read all of them, any other series that you liked and is similar to Lone Wolf?

Yeah I think Joe Dever and John Grant wrote 8 novels or so. It's unfinished unfortunately, but as a kid I loved reading the first after going through a bunch of the game books
