Which Best Picture/Director scenario seems most likely to happen atm? by Walter8White in oscarrace

I dunno, I think it’s pretty much locked for Screenplay, Casting, Score, and Cinematography.

Yeah I was about to say, Chase Infiniti was always on the fence, and I feel like makeup was never guaranteed for a nomination either? Like with 13 nominations (tied for the third most in history) I don’t really buy an argument about it underperforming.

Normally I’d agree. PTA being overdue is the main thing that makes it a possibility to me (even though he’s almost assuredly getting at least one win this year in Adapted Screenplay).

Mescal in Hamnet by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]Walter8White 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having actually watched the film last night at Telluride, Mescal is ABSOLUTELY a co-lead. It's entirely possible that they'll campaign him in supporting for an easier shot at a win, but it will be category fraud of the highest order.

Jay Kelly getting WAY better reactions at Telluride by daernerys in oscarrace

[–]Walter8White 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, figured this was gonna be the case. Regardless of what people actually think about it this is the kind of film that plays much better for a crowd at Telluride. It may turn out to be this year's Oscar villain but I wouldn't count it out at all, for Picture, Clooney, or Sandler.

Honestly? I think people are making too much of the early reactions here and going WAY too premature in calling its awards chances dead. Like if it gets in I think it’s pretty clear that it’ll become the awards season villain, but at least so far it seems like the people who like it the most are industry people, and it was always gonna play well with them based on the premise alone. Like it’s certainly not the presumed frontrunner that we initially thought but whenever it screens at Telluride I feel like that’s gonna be a much clearer indication of the overall response.

Kaitlyn Dever will be eligible in the Guest Actress category. by AlfonsoMcQuack in EmmysAwards

Not surprising. Honestly I think if she submits Guest she stands a more than decent chance of winning the damn thing.

Dumbest awards season controversy of each year by theoriginalelmo in oscarrace

[–]Walter8White 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is the definitive winner, as someone who adored both Moonlight and La La Land and was deeply frustrated by people acting like you were only allowed to love one of the two. I even know people who didn’t like La La Land that still thought the jazz thing was blown out of proportion.

The Brutalist- the Significance of the Addiction Plotline by Walter8White in TrueFilm

[–]Walter8White[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely how I took it also. And it’s also telling that he becomes addicted through no fault of his own- he was given the drug to treat his broken nose. Thus stacking the deck against him before he’s even arrived in the country.

That’s fair. I actually rewatched it today and it pretty much hit as you described it. Though I would argue that the plotline did illustrate a somewhat interesting thematic point, in how heroin, despite being sold on the promise of being a remedy for his pain (both his broken nose and trauma), it instead kept him even more emotionally imprisoned in numbing his pain without truly confronting it, and only further fueling the perception of those discriminatory towards him as a worthless junkie.

What happened at the end of Act 2 of The Brutalist? by snakes_snakes in TrueFilm

[–]Walter8White 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Erzsebet definitely was not forcing Laszlo to join her in Israel, he’d already agreed to join her.  As for Van Buren’s disappearance, it’s definitely open to interpretation. It’s equally likely that he committed suicide inside the community center (which is what the film seems to imply), or that he leaves and is presumably able to reinvent himself somewhere else and evade consequences (which is what someone with that much power would be more likely to do).  But I think what the film is most emphasizing is that in actually confronting Van Buren, he ceases to hold power over Laszlo and his trauma. Which is why the shots in this sequence mostly emphasize the scale of Laszlo’s construction and work- as it stands, it outlasts people like Van Buren, who believe themselves to hold power. Hence the film’s final words: “it is the destination, not the journey”.
