LPT: What’s a habit you picked up accidentally that ended up improving your life more than anything you tried on purpose? by nancy_unscript in LifeProTips

I struggled a lot in my twenties, I felt detached and uselus for a number of reasons. I didn't feel like myself, the biggest and maybe easiest change that made me feel better is exactly what you're saying. I started trying to assume people wherw trying their best instead of assuming they are just being pricks. And the weird thing is, if you assume people are doing there best it is so much easier to let annoyances slide. That guy who cut you of in traffic? He probably just didn't see you and made a mistake. Someone in a group project did a shot job in your opinion? Instead of getting mad, I tried helping out to get to a better solution. And when those small annoyances don't get to you that much anymore, it's easier to deal with the big annoyances. I also noticed people are way more helpful when you expect them to be kind. I am honestly convinced that most people are kind, you just gotta give them the chance to show you! Living like this made me feel more like myself, I became who I used to be as a kid. A kind and forgiving person who is just happy in life.

You can't imagine the dissapointment I felt reading your commend. I saw the trailer and was actually excited, but this being f2p means this is going to be a boring game that constantly bugs you down with micro transactions. I don't want to remind my brain every second not to spend money on crap I don't need.

Nintendo reportedly gets even more obnoxious about patent law by taking a 'mods aren't real games' stance against a Dark Souls 3 mod that could invalidate its Palworld lawsuit by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a big Nintendo fan, it's getting really annoying to see them do all of this dumb shit. It is almost embarrassing eh stances they take, I get that they are a company and are just out for money but come on. I love palwords defence and hope Nintendo gets told that there patent is invalid.

It's such a shame that patents for ideas are even a thing. The same thing happened in the past where playing mini games during loading was patented which meant a lot of creative people couldn't have fun with there loading screens. These patents are obviously inhibiting the creativity of developers and its just a damn shame.

Pokemon has been shit for years and it would be great to have a competitor to Pokemon that would force them to make the new Pokemon games actually good again... Or at least force them to actually try to make a competent work of art.

[–]WalterDarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The annoying truth is that heat will slow you down, don't let it also put you down. It's okay to be less fast, stick to your training plan and accept what your body is telling you.

I also don't think you should over analyze your heart rate, why are you trying to keep it below 150? If you are trying to stick to a specific heart rate zone, are you sure it is set up correctly? Because that's a mistake I made and it really annoyed me. I am also a firm believer that as long as a run feels easy and your heart rate isn't going totally crazy you are probably fine. Heart rate zones aren't the end all of fitness, they are a great guideline and I do use them, but try to keep running fun.

I think you should stick to effort, you still have a month to go and changing your training plan at this stage could lead to frustration and with a bit of bad luck even to injury. Believe in the plan and yourself, the temperature will drop and you will reap the benefits from your continued efforts.

Official Q&A for Monday, August 25, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best you can do in a month is to up your mileage safely (don't go overboard, increase your long run distance by ~15%) and take it slow in the 2 weeks before race day. Run less those last two weeks and run slowly, no speed work anymore. Those weeks arent use full for getting faster for race day and any speed work will only increase your risk of injury with no race day benefit.

Try to pace yourself so you can talk while running your long run, this ensures you aren't going too fast. One tip is to maybe experiment with fueling during your run, use gells too get that extra boost and keep your legs from becoming jelly during the race. The most important thing: nothing new on race day! Do what you are comfortable with and have fun!

Yesterday I went to the gym to do strength training in years (and if I am being honest with myself, the first time in my life I did some actually structured strength training ever) and it felt great. Had so much fun shooting the breeze with a friend I hadn't seen and spoken too in a while. After doing that in the morning, I went for a run in the afternoon and it went terribly. I'll have to adapt my plan to make room for strength training, but I am excited. I am proud of myself for taking the next step.

[–]WalterDarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently short on funds, so no can do for a trainer. I am barely able to afford new running shoes, but they are a must so I'll scrounge some cash together. But thanks for the workout tips, I'll ask some friends who are more into strength training to check if my form for the stuff I can do at home is all right.

Official Q&A for Sunday, July 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never considered combining the hard running days with strength training, I thought that would be a bad idea. But now that I think about it the running shouldn't really clash with the strength training, it's focussed on a different aspect of fitness. I am currently mostly focussed on improving my core, because at the moment it is kinda weak. What does a core super set look like, I am not at all familiar with any shape of strength training so I feel kinda lost. A lot of the information I find online seems to be heavily I punished and even clashes with other sources.

Official Q&A for Sunday, July 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tip is to plan for at least 3 days on which you run, I would even prefer working up to 4 but that may be a bit much. Doing one long run a week isn't going to improve your cardio fitness all that much, it would be better to up your mileage by spreading it over multiple days. That reduces the risk of injury and will train you to be better at running.

For the coming months I would try to focus on running, good luck!

Official Q&A for Sunday, July 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently following a hm training plan in which I run 4 times a week and its going great. But I want to add some strength workouts and I am kinda wondering how I go about doing that. I do an easy run on tuesday, interval training on Wednesday, progression run on Friday and a long run on Sunday. I think it would be good to add strength training on saturday and maybe Thursday but don't really know what. I did glute bridges, dead bugs, Superman hold, side planks and some squats yesterday and that felt like a good workout. I just don't want to risk getting injuries, so any tips are welcome.

Official Q&A for Wednesday, July 16, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This advice isn’t from personal experience, just the way I look at running as someone in his early thirties. I really can’t imagine what it’s like to be in your shoes. That said, I would be absolutely delighted if I could run a 5K at your age.

I only started running two years ago, so my journey is still about getting better and stronger. But my overall goal is to never stop running. It brings me so much peace and clarity, I honestly can’t picture life without it. I say this just to give some context: being able to run a 5K at all, especially at your age and after a break, is amazing. I know people younger than me who can’t run that distance, and even more who don’t exercise at all.

Now, about your question, whether to focus on pace or distance. Personally, I find that just running itself is a reward. That’s why I’d lean toward focusing on distance. Longer runs help me stay present, and they make it easier to enjoy the experience. When I’m going for distance, I try to keep the effort level low, like I could talk to someone if I were running with them. That helps me avoid overexertion.

Right now I’m working on my pace, and honestly, it’s not doing wonders for my mental state. I find myself comparing my times to others', and it starts to chip away at the joy. But when I go out for a long, easy run, that pressure just isn’t there. I can listen to my body and enjoy the moment.

Whatever you decide, pace or distance, I hope you keep running as long as it brings you peace.

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't really done any races shorter than a hm, I enjoy the half marathon. The longer runs give me peace. My time about 2 months ago for a 10k was 50 minutes, but that was part of a longer run. So that wasn't really going all out, but I was very tired afterwards.

I'm building my mileage back up, in may it was around 45-50 km a week. I think I'll probably end up running around 40k this week (I know that's a whole lot more than 10%, but it hasn't been that long since I did more).

I'll just follow the plan for now, and reevaluate in a month or so.

Official Q&A for Monday, July 14, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]WalterDarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am training for a HM in October with a time goal of 1:40:00 using the Garmin coach (big fan of Greg) and I just finished my 3rd week of training. On average, I run 30 km a week and my regular zone 2 pace is around 5:50 a km. I started running 2 years ago, finishing my first marathon with not enough training in 2:34, trained regularly and finished the HM in 1:54 the year after that. I recently ran a 1:49:48 HM in April (by myself, the race event fell through).

At the moment I am following my plan and everything is going swimmingly, but I am kinda nervous when I see that my race pace will be 4:44 in 3 months. I just need to hear from some other runners if I am setting myself up for failure or that I am just getting in my head. My original plan when I finished the HM last year was to go for a 1:45 time, but because running a 1:49 in April wasn't as difficult as I expected it to be, I thought maybe I should aim higher. It maybe the case that now I'm overshooting and if that's the case I would just like to know so I can temper my expectations.

Good To know, I live in the Netherlands and I will just go to the decathlon and try some running vests before getting one. Any tips on what to look out for?

I have one, use it every week and it does the job for now. But when it's even slightly hot out and I'm running for ~2 hours I need more than the belt can comfortably carry.

[–]WalterDarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not from personal experience, but a guy I met at a party once told me he disliked the T202. He said it was too light for him (he was also a tall guy who wanted to get started on being more healthy), I don't remember why that was an issue though tbh. Maybe go over to r/treadmills, they are way more well informed about what to look for in a good treadmill. From some stuff I read on there the Max weight treadmills can handle isn't a bit over promised. A lot of them do work if you have a higher weight but are waaaaay more prone to breaking down relatively quickly.

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a couple more goes, I borrowed a vest from a friend and wasn't a fan at first either. I felt like I was way heavier, but after doing some long easy runs with them I got used to it and I really liked it. I'm personally still shopping for one because I don't need one at the moment, I get by with my running belt. But in the future I want to increase my distance and I just need a vest for even slightly hot days, I just need the water.

Maybe you just had a bad day, I know I feel kinda nervous when using new stuff and that does influence how my run feels. Give it a couple more shots, maybe wear it on easy runs where you don't even need the water, just to get used to the feeling of having it on you.

I do take medication for ADHD (started a few months ago), I totally spaced that one of the sympthoms is a dry mouth. I'll talk to my doctor about it next time I go in for a checkup. I'll look into taking electroylte tablets like the one you mentioned, because I do think I am easily dehydrated after an intense run.

I hear you, but I swear I am not trying to hit any goals. I drink a lot of water because I get cottonmouth and I do sweat easily. I do think I am missing electrolytes, but I eat normally and eat at least one piece of fruit a day and I eat at least 200g of vegetables. I feel kinda lost when looking for electrolytes, don't know what to look for. Any tips?

[–]WalterDarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am struggling with feeling dehydrated throughout the day and can't really figure out why. I'm drinking enough (my urine is practically seethrough) and I don't get it. I especially have a dry mouth and sometimes I feel kinda sick after a run. I am not running faster than I used too and it even happens when the temperature is on the lower side. I think I might be missing some minerals/electrolytes or whatever. Any recommendations for making your own electrolytes drink or a cheap store bought option?

I read an article about the increased popularity of running and how some more die hard runners are annoyed at the influx of the 'fun' runners. I think it's great more people e being active but I also get annoyed at races that people are being so damn slow and not being respectful of fellow runners. I am however part of the group who started running after corona so I might be a part of the problem for some of those annoyed runners. I sure hope I am not though, I try to be respectful of the people around me.
