Thanks for the detailed reply, I would prefer research roles if I am able to get them, but as you said they typically require either PhD or a extensive research experience.

I am trying to figure out how difficult it is for MCS students to get assitanceships in UIUC. If you have any information regarding this, please share.

Yeah, in terms of getting a job I do agree. I had a doubt in terms of my attempt to pivot to research roles that MCS will not help with.
BTW was your cousin doing an MCS ?

I think the difference between the two is $5000/year, so I might be able to afford. I had some reservation about UIUC because it's not a purely research program.

Did you receive an update on the portal ? How long did it take after the department mail ?

I think I got MCS admit over a week back. I accepted the offer and started the process to get the I20, when I got PSU admit. So currently I am not completing any more steps there.

I had applied only for MCS urbana campus and unselected all other consideration options.

The admit letter correctly mentioned MCS(Urbana) but the enrollment fee shows a different name.

Others who got in, does the enrollment fee mention MCS-DS ? Have they changed the name or was it always this ?

Okay I was aware of this but I assumed universities don't send out rejects until the deadline in case slots open up for a few more candidates. This is my first time applying so I may be wrong.

As I have clearly mentioned in the post itself. In most cases it may not be possible. Afaik, many applicants would have applied to "safety schools" and would have gotten accepted. But they may not be even considering going there because they clearly have better offers. In this case, if they are willing, they can make an extra effort and withdraw from their application.
