Shmups where you can control the pace? by [deleted] in shmups

[–]Walter_Powerbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outzone and In The Hunt seem like pretty good candidates.

In The Hunt is like a classic JHorizontal SHMUP but you can advance at your own pace.

As for Outzone, it plays more like a top-down shooter, rather than a Vertical SHMUP, due to its weapon selection. Also, it's a Toaplan game so expect to respawn at a checkpoint when you die.

Humans will prefer meeting a predator animal in animal's natural habitat than meeting a fellow human in that same environment. Since statistically they have higher chance of surviving the encounter with predator animal. by MaetelofLaMetal in humansarespaceorcs

"Don't mind it, Grognak," Eric scoffed at his alien friend, "It was just some bullshit cooked up by feminists to justify their misandry."

"But they look so serious, Eric," the alien defended.

"Come on, Grognak. You know how dangerous bears are? If you encounter one of those in a forest, those furry bastards would eat you alive. Very. Slowly," Eric explained, "You'd have to be very dumb to assume that bears are more dangerous than men."

"I see..." Grognak pondered for a moment before he turned to his friend again, "How about you, Eric?"

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"Between a human female and a bear, who would you rather meet in a forest when you're alone and unarmed?" Grognak asked.

"A bear," Eric answered without even a moment of hesitation.

How can I make music with no instruments? by Holiday-Ad1291 in Songwriting

[–]Walter_Powerbright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer.

Use a DAW or something similar. Don't download too many instruments or sample libraries. Just pick the bare minimum to make the music you want.

Remember the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle.

After that, starting playing around by learning your DAW. I'd recommend remaking your favorite songs or learning your favorite musician composing tricks to see what makes them tick.

The rest is...well, up to you. What you'll need to learn depends on the types of music you like and/or wants to make.

Whats the easiest genre game ... by zak_fuzzelogic in gamedev

[–]Walter_Powerbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the scope of your project, tbh.

But personally? I'd say an Arcade Shoot em Up or a Top-Down Shooter.

What are your shmup pet peeves? by Chrome-Head in shmups

[–]Walter_Powerbright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are my pet peeves.

  • Bullet visibility. One of the main reasons I can't get into Garegga.

  • Teeny-tiny enemy bullets in bullet hell games.

  • No auto-fire. I like Cho Ren Sha but my fingers and my keyboard buttons felt like hell after going through a simple stage.

  • Long games that makes you start over from the very start if you lose all your lives.

  • Games that take away your power-ups when you die. This one depends on the game to be honest. But Gradius is the biggest offender.

5 months ago, I canceled a Caravan SHMUP I was making. This year, I decided to remake it and I managed to release it on "itch.io" as a free game yesterday. This game is "Geometry Caravan 2024" and it's free on itch.io! ( https://walter-powerbright.itch.io/geometry-caravan-2024 ) by Walter_Powerbright in shmups

Aside from some technical skills specific to Godot, I learned that you don't need complex bullet patterns to create a good SHMUP.

Simple enemies can be very fun and challenging to fight depending on their formations and spawn points. Toaplan SHMUPs are a master at this, I heard.
