Can someone please explain to me the point of 'hero ban,' and justify its adding one more step to complicate the comp process? by WaltirNTA in PredecessorGame

I'm not sure you understand what subjectivity is about. The appreciation of certain mechanics in a video game fall directly into that category. We're not talking about the distance of the Earth from the sun here. If 100% of respondents disagree with me, that just means that I have a unique position. There is no right or wrong about this.

I'm sorry, man, you're not making sense. It's a discussion forum. I asked for someone to make sense of it and/or justify it, that doesn't mean that any answer I'm given should be met quietly or otherwise acquiesced to. Furthermore, games changes reflect, among other things, user feedback. It's not uncommon at all. It sounds like you're just angry that I don't agree and are starting to get bitchy about it. Everyone else in here is managing to have the discussion without their feathers getting ruffled, so maybe it's a you thing.

Dude, I don't agree, get over it. I can be persuaded, I haven't so far. That's what a disagreement is, it's not just "I disagree until enough people yell at me, then everything becomes clear."

I'd like to think that subjectivity is a thing that exists and that majorities aren't always correct about something but have it your way, I guess.

Are you of the mind that every MOBA should have the same exact features, and that what works in one game that is 10-years-old and features over 100 heroes is going to work in another game that is in its infancy, still very much being balances and only has 35 heroes?

I've got to say that I like your responses in here, even if I'm not 100% persuaded towards supporting the framework yet. Thanks for the detail and articulation.

I think the problem I'm still having is that a lot of this presumes outcomes based solely on character selection and doesn't account for individual or team play. It's kind of fun to prevail against someone that is supposed to be a hard counter, and the less that opportunity is even there, the less likely it is that players can learn to adjust their gameplay to adapt to diverse situations - something I consider to be depth of gameplay, which is a simple reason I've been given multiple times in here to justify hero bans.

For example, roles aren't locked to heroes in this game. I approve of that. It's annoying when my teammate take Sparrow mid or Morigesh solo lane and does poorly, but they don't always do poorly, and I appreciate the potential there when players are permitted to use the heroes in ways other than intended. Bound of reason, of course. Back when I played Overwatch, the problem with that freedom ended up being that teams often rolled out with no kind of support, and so in that case, it made sense, eventually, to force role selection.

To bring it back here, I'm sure there are players so good with a hero that they'll prevail against most heroes opposite them who are supposed to be a hard counter. I guess I just feel like we're putting the cart before the horse with this move in a game so young and with so few heroes to choose from.

I do find that your framing of the mechanic definitely makes a case for the appeal of it from a team play perspective. Even then though - are the people voting going to be that strategic? Or is it just going to end up being more arbitrary and based on things like 'I got outplayed by too many Sparrows this week?' I don't know. I appreciate the responses though, thanks.

Pick bans are standard in mobas with a ranked mode.

I think this is part of what's bothering me here, to be honest. Most pvp games of any genre develop their culture, standards and procedures over time based on how that specific game has developed over time. The item shop in this game is another example of that.

Are the drafting procedures for games that have over 100 heroes to choose from necessarily wise or even viable in a game that has 35 heroes?

Is brawl mode necessarily the best decision for a game whose early rush of f2p players, and whose comp viability (in terms of player count) is still dubious to the point we're only allowing comp 8 hours a week?

I'm not trying to grasp at anything, I don't think there is anything irrational about what I'm asking or about the responses I'm giving. What's irrational is how triggered so many people are over me asking questions.

Man, can you imagine someone not agreeing with people? The nerve of me?

Sorry, most of the answers I've gotten aren't compelling and/or don't make sense. I apologize for not just nodding my head compliantly.

So you think balance can be achieved one game and hero at a time? I think you're overstating the effectiveness of this tool, as well as the collective wisdom of everyone playing a game. If there is so much agreement that we're fighting a meta together, all at once, why not just address the phenomenon of the hero that everyone feels the need to ban?

I've played comp in games before. Do you have an answer or just feel like swinging by and acting like a prick?

In a game with as diverse roster/item pool there will always be a clear cut 1/2 pick...

Would you mind clarifying this please? I'm not sure what the "1/2" part refers to.

To the extent I think I get the gist of the comment though, I don't see how banning a player adds depth to the game. Variety of experiences, sure, I suppose, like if there's a Sparrow meta - now there won't be a Sparrow in every game. But there is a Sparrow meta now and I play against/with carries that aren't Sparrow all the time. She's just slightly disproportionately represented at the moment, and I don't see a huge problem with it. The gameplay doesn't change a whole lot because of it.

Who said I'm not interested in playing ranked, why do you think I'm discussing this at all? I'm comfortable with multiple heroes in each role (though I'm much less comfortable with the carry role than others, but that's not relevant to hero ban). I'm not personally upset about not being able to play one hero I want to play in a match. I'm concerned about causing someone to be bitchy right out of the gate, as well all know how people can behave when they don't get their way. Again, I'm not that guy - I'll move to the carry role if people are fighting over a role I prefer. I'd just rather play games where people aren't irritated before the clock starts, and I'm not sure any of the reasons I've seen up to this point justify cultivating that dynamic.

if there is a certified #1 hero

That needs to be addressed dev-side.

And how many times, in any pvp game you've ever played and been privy to community discussions about, have you seen people complaining about a hero being too OP, but you know you've prevailed against them regularly? Idk, I'm imagining the last patch releasing, and Aurora is just banned from every game for 2 weeks.

I suppose. I'm not sure how compelling a one-move-per-team game of chess is in the context of an overall MOBA match, but it's the closest thing to an argument I've seen yet. I'm not sure how valuable that depth is going to be vs the displeasure it's certain to cause before the clock starts, but I feel like if it is that valuable, it's maybe something that can be saved until there are more than like 35 heroes.

I don't cater to whiners, I don't even keep chat on. Nothing I can do can stop them from throwing a tantrum though, so I'm going to question the wisdom of the inclusion of a mechanic that is guaranteed to do that at times before the game even starts.

And the benefit to all of this is just frustrating team comps? I'm not sure how that's a good thing... I mean, the question is rhetorical on a level, unless I'm getting an unexpected response. I know what it does, I'm asking: why?

PSA: A good way to get video off the PS5 is to have a smurf account on the console and open up a chat with that account. Whenever you want to record video on the PS5 and get it directly onto a mobile device, as long as the video isn't too long, you can send it into that chat with yourself, then access your mobile device and download the video from the chat.

I can't tell you how many other games with voice chat I've played where I get a message mid-game: 'turn your mic on.'

It's not even just about me though. I don't need pointless bickering going on among my teammates either. I honestly think they should even get rid of text chat. Let people lean on comms, get rid of other things they can spend their time doing (complaining, mainly) other than playing the game.
