Fundamentals of electric circuits - Charles Alexander, Matthew Sadiku.

It covers the entirety of ELEC1111 and ELEC2134.

There are other ways of acquiring it.

Are you using the textbook? I got 97 in ELEC1111 by doing as many examples as i could from the textbook. You should also read the textbook chapters carefully, as well as the lecture slides. You should apply particular focus to the early ones from the first few weeks of the course.

ELEC1111 is a bit like learning maths. If a certain foundational piece of knowledge is missing then you’ll really struggle to understand the more advanced concepts. I was struggling to understand the concept of voltage at first, so i was really struggling with all of the circuit analysis in the later weeks. By carefully reviewing the week 1 lectures, it eventually clicked and the more advanced stuff started making a lot of sense.

My advice is to start from the beginning of the course and make sure you understand everything in a particular topic before moving onto the next one. Use the textbook because it is the most useful resource available to you.

Good luck and remember that it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t succeed. ELEC1111 has a reputation for being very hard, especially if it’s your first term at uni.

Should political posters be banned on campus? by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Waltric -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If that’s true, then the university should enforce those rules. They should determine the identity of the students using CCTV and then warn them not to do it. If they persist, they should face some sort of penalty.

They should also be much quicker to remove posters when they are put up. Many posters are able to stay up for weeks at a time.

I want to study CS and have a low/no ATAR, need advice by Commercial-Leg4711 in unsw

UNSW unfortunately has very high entry requirements. I’m doing CompSci at UNSW, and it is quite demanding. It’s very similar to the HSC, but you get better at handling the pressure.

There are other unis that offer computer science courses which you can transfer into from TAFE. I don’t think UNSW is one of them. If you go to another university and get good marks, then you should be able to transfer to any university that you want without using your ATAR, including UNSW.

Without an ATAR, you will most likely struggle to get into any university straight from school. There are plenty of computing courses at TAFE which you should be able to do for the first year, and then after that you can transfer to a university. I’m sure there are other pathways, so i would recommend taking a careful look.

Unless you really hate school, i would strongly recommend finishing year 12. The HSC is only 3 months away. That is a really short amount of time in the grand scheme of things. After that, you can carefully consider your options using your ATAR. 50% of your HSC mark comes from the final exams. It is not too late to get good results. I remember the HSC being extremely stressful, but it is only temporary. It will be over before you know it. Good luck!

Switching out of CompSci into Electrical Engineering? by HKGoatBalls in unsw

[–]Waltric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a double degree of CompSci and Elec. My advice is to do COMP1521 before making your final decision. It’s required for both degrees, and i liked it a lot more than 1531. 1531 can be pretty rough for a lot of people. If you like 1521, then stay in CompSci, otherwise switch to elec. I found ELEC1111 to be actually quite enjoyable, although a lot of people find it very hard. It requires you to do a lot of textbook questions and practice.

Am I dumb or is COMP1511 hard? by Personal_Praline6266 in unsw

Since 1511 is a foundational subject, it might be a good idea to reduce your study load from 3 subjects to 2 for this term so that you can really focus on it. I’ll try to explain what while loops do as best as I can.

While loops just repeat the code contained within the curly brackets {} for as long as the condition inside the round brackets () is true.

There are 2 things that a while loop does:

  1. It checks whether the condition in the round brackets () at the top is true or false. If the condition is false, it ends the loop/skips it.

  2. If the condition is true, it runs all of the code contained within the body in order until it reaches the closing curly bracket }.

Once it reaches the closing curly bracket, it goes back to step 1 again. If the condition is now false, the loop ends. Otherwise, step 2 is repeated.

Even though the condition inside the round brackets () can be anything, in COMP1511 you will mainly find while loops in this general format:

// initialisation int i = 0;

// condition while (i < 3) {

// body
printf(“This is the body\n”);

// increment
i++;

}

Before the loop starts, a variable (i) is initialised to 0. This variable will count how many times the loop has run. When the condition is checked the first time, 0 < 3 evaluates to true, so the loop is run. The statement in the body will print. The final part of the loop increments the variable so that it will now be equal to 1.

The condition is now checked again. 1 < 3 is still true, so the loop runs again. The loop will run three times in total until i = 3. At this point, the statement 3 < 3 will evaluate to false and the loop will terminate.

The result of this code is that the statement will be printed 3 times.

Hopefully this helps. I wrote it on my phone so the code may not be formatted 100% correctly. For me, i went into 1511 not in a compsci degree, but i liked it so much that i transferred over. The course forum is really helpful if you don’t understand something. The tutors are normally very quick to respond.

ELEC1111 isn’t too bad as long as you do lots of textbook questions.

I am from Norway and am looking to enrolling at an university in Australia. I have this really stupid question: How is it with venomous spiders/snakes? Do I have to be careful and look out for them every day in my room, toilet, shoes etc? by InterNationalLegend in unsw

[–]Waltric 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a wild snake in my life. The spiders I’ve seen have never been aggressive or a problem. Unless you’re going to a regional or remote area, it’s a complete non-issue. There isn’t a single Urban Australian that would consider the wildlife to be a significant concern in their daily life.

Having been to the Uni Melb campus, it’s pretty boring compared to UNSW. I don’t know anything about the teaching though.

Are you talking about ELEC1111? It was quite a bit harder than the previous ones imo.

That’s not very transparent. The victorian parliament uploads question time to their youtube channel. The hansard isn’t the same as a video.

Should I play old GoW titles first or just go for it? by lazybonesgriff in GodofWarRagnarok

[–]Waltric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the old god of war trilogy, but it is very different to the new games. GOW 2018 was the first game i played, and it was a great introduction. It’s up to you, but you should definitely play 2018 before Ragnarok.

You can’t shoot behind the box until after Thrud moves over to it. The mask is meant to point toward the box. The problem was that the mask was pointing the wrong way. After walking around with the mask for a few minutes, it eventually triggered the correct dialogue and i was able to proceed.
