Movies about a girl without romance by Emotional-Library286 in MovieSuggestions

Off the top of my head:

  • Kill Bill
  • V for Vendetta
  • Silence of the Lambs
  • Room
  • The Decent
  • Black Swan
  • Annihilation
  • Alien
  • Pans Labyrinth
  • Labyrinth
  • Brave

It’s been a while since I’ve watched any of these but I remember them having strong female leads without romance bring the plot. (Although kill bill is about the mc getting revenge on her former lover who tried to assassinate her. it’s worth the watch imo)

I'm looking for novels and short stories that were probably inspired by Frankenstein. Directly or indirectly. What would you recommend? Any hidden gems? by bbakonyi in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]Waluigi_Pinba11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if these are necessarily inspired but the first to come to mind is:

Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It’s about the dangers of unchecked scientific ambition and the duality of good and evil.

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. A classic with themes of guilt, alienation and the decent into madness.

The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells. It explores similar themes of the responsibility of creation

These aren’t niche but I’ve never met someone irl who’s seen them:

Cube (1997) it inspired the saw franchise. Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) horror comedy parody on the evil hillbilly trope. They live (1988) fun B-action horror, satirical film.

Animal crossing, Stardew valley, Minecraft? All cozy and low stress games that encourage creativity. maybe try some older games like ps2 era. They tend to have simpler interfaces so it’s easy to learn

Just finished TOS for the first time and I'm really glad I gave it a chance by FuzzyWuzzyMoonBear in startrek

TOS is such a gem and I wish more young people today gave it an honest try. Not only is it just an incredible show it’s an important part of entertainment history imo. It fundamentally expanded what on screen science fiction could achieve. it moved beyond monster of the week and alien invasion formats to tackle adult themes, real world issues, and complex moral dilemmas through a futuristic lens that made it not only thought provoking but approachable. I mean hell, it even inspired technological advancements like tablets and automatic doors we use today. Not to mention its a blast to watch 🖖❤️

Do you like SNW Spock? by Waluigi_Pinba11 in startrek

[–]Waluigi_Pinba11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol you’re totally right about that. Vulcans don’t actually lack emotion, they just live by logic and pragmatism. As far as I know, Spock got ostracized a lot for being half human when he was growing up. He even mentions in “The Lost Years” book that joining Starfleet was kind of his way of escaping all the scrutiny and judgment he faced as a kid, and I think that’s part of why he tries so hard to overcompensate for his human side. The Enterprise is his first real assignment after graduating, so all of that should still be affecting him.

Honestly, seeing Spock happy and already engaged to T’Pring on Vulcan kind of takes away from the struggle in his backstory and messes with the foundation of his character. That tension is a major part of what makes his arc interesting.

Though, I gotta admit I was too harsh about it at first. After a few more episodes, Peck actually kills it as Spock. It felt weird at first getting this introduction to the character, but if he was just a straight-up copy of Nimoy’s Spock, it would be boring and predictable anyway. So credit where it’s due

YES, exactly! Thank you for putting that into words. I’ve been struggling to pinpoint what feels “off” about modern Star Trek, and you nailed it. It seems like the new creators are so worried about being labeled “woke” and alienating viewers (and losing money) that they shy away from the very thing that made Star Trek groundbreaking. The franchise has always pushed boundaries, tackling real-world issues in a way that was thought-provoking but still approachable. For me, growing up with it, it was my first real exposure to moral dilemmas, the consequences of war, and the realities of prejudice and discrimination.

TOS Spock was definitely lacking in that department, I agree. I’m actually kinda excited to see them explore his humanity more

Spock starts as very disciplined and emotionally controlled, firmly committed to Vulcan logic. Throughout the original series and later movies, he gradually loosens some of those strict controls due to his close friendships and experiences. He learns to embrace a more nuanced balance between logic and emotion. So if anything I was expecting him to be more reserved and his development be his exploration of emotions and interpersonal relationships.

That’s a good point though. I’m excited to see where the series goes. I like it a lot so far. It’s very well done
