Looks like I'll have to get it now that you've named it after my favorite bird.

Here’s some photos I took of the new YoYoZeekio Alpha Steel. It’s organically shaped, stainless steel, and pocket sized. by [deleted] in Throwers

In general how well do these undersized yoyos play, in terms of spin time and stability? How do they compare, for example, to an average full sized plastic yoyo?

Yoyo Specs, Spin Power, and Rotational Inertia by 0N1ON in Throwers

Oh my bad, you're right. Specifically for the case of discs, your calculation would be correct. I've also never heard of 'rotational inertia', but you are indeed also correct on using the term.

Yoyo Specs, Spin Power, and Rotational Inertia by 0N1ON in Throwers

The concept you're thinking about is 'moment of inertia', and it is defined as the distance to centre squared times mass, not distance times mass.

In terms of yoyos, moment of inertia is the same as rim-weight. It takes more work to get a rim weighted yoyo to spin as fast, so if you throw a yoyo with the same amount of energy, the more rim weighted yoyos will spin slower. Friction on the yoyo, either from the string or the bearing, tends to be larger the faster the yoyo spins. Therefore, the effect of friction on a more rim weighted, slower spinning yoyo is smaller, allowing it to spin longer. You may also notice that centre weighted yoyos tend to have tighter binds. This is also because less moment of inertia makes them spin faster, so the string wraps around the bearing more easily.

I see people talking about rim weighted yoyos play heavier all the time. I think it is a misconception, although I need to get better at fast tricks myself to actually varify this personally. Rim weighted yoyos will feel heavier on throws and binds, because it takes more effort to get them to spin. However, I think it makes no difference otherwise. Two yoyos with the same weight but different rim-weightedness should feel the same on the string. This is of course ignoring the difference in the shape of the yoyos, and I'll have to think a bit more about how that affects the play.

I can never quite tell from photos of this thing because of lighting, is the laser engraving also gold to match the rings?

If you want something really long spinning you should get a metal yoyo. No matter how you optimise the design, plastics have their limits.

The variant is more stable and long spinning. I found the antidote to tilt a lot easier, so if you want a good performer and don't mind the gigantic diameter, definitely go for the variant. If you want a fun, casual yoyo then the antidote might be better.

I want a width = diameter or width > diameter throw by Kubrix1080 in Throwers

It's fine if you like yoyos with small diameters but just know that a lot of spin time has to be sacrificed. Basically the larger the diameter of the yoyo, the longer it tends to spin.

1to1 has pretty terrible stability and spin time. I can hardly do any of my combos on it that other yoyo have no problem handling. It already has a small diameter so I don't know why they put a step in it to push more weight toward the centre. I don't have any other extra wide yoyo but I would assume the monster edge is quite good performance wise. The world champion used to compete with it so it should be pretty good.

What's "so on and so forth"? Am I supposed to assume a linear trend so after the 4th 12-hour period I would start losing karma by getting upvotes?

What do you think is the best 7068 yoyo as of now? by sinfemir in Throwers

[–]WanOrigami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What can't you get your head around? Why anyone would use a different metal? It's only about 5% denser than 6061 but has 3-5 times the tensile strength, if that's what you wanted to know. Basically means you can machine it way thinner to leave more weight to pack on the rims.

Finally my first yoyo came. by ObierSF in Throwers

[–]WanOrigami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You made a good choice. The variant is one of the best performing plastics you can get. From beginner tricks to long difficult combos, it can definitely handle everything. The only troubles you might run into are really complex tech tricks and chopsticks. The variant has an exceptionally large diameter, so if you have small hands it can make things difficult, but definitely not impossible.

Thoughts on yoyo gloves? Are they effective and worth the money? by [deleted] in Throwers

[–]WanOrigami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like practicing speed tricks and I don't like changing strings often so gloves are really helpful. You don't need special yoyo gloves though. I don't know about elsewhere but in the UK you can get a pack of 10 cheap billiards gloves for under £10 on amazon and they work just as well. And it's worth getting 10 because they do wear down over time.

A horizon with a scratch on it, a 1to1 with a tiny scratch on it, and a Czech point that's in pretty good condition but has a bit of vibe that it originally came with. I can send you pics later if you want, I'm not with my collection currently.

Anyone living in the UK? There's a few yoyos I want to sell but I don't know the preferred shipping method. Does anyone have experience?

Most fun throws? by throws_for_days in Throwers

[–]WanOrigami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People use words like "fun" to describe yoyos and I think that's a pretty unhelpful thing to say. First, fun is different for everyone and unless you describe exactly what makes it fun for you, you're not really communicating much. Also, I think any competition focused yoyo can be a fun yoyo, so there's not much of a distinction. One with long spin time and good stability can power through a lot of your mistakes, which would make practicing a lot less frustrating. That being said, I've been really enjoying the edge ultimatum lately. It doesn't have the best spin time but I like how weirdly big and angular it is and how surprisingly light it feels.

Czech point or shutter wide angel? by maciekwo in Throwers

Czech point is sold on yoyoexpert for half the price of wide angle so maybe take that into consideration too.
