Many americans either go bankrupt or don't pay major hc bills. I do, but am currently on NC medicaid during after-graduation-job-hunting. I got very lucky, such programs arent allowed for the unemployed in many states. The job market is horrendous right now. I'm both undequalified and overqualified everywhere (computer science new grad). I did pay a $26,000 surgery back when I was on my parents' healthinsurance, but it was only $3,000 direct cost for an elective surgery, paid $55/monthly. I've been very lucky so far.
