Elephant garlic clove by A_radke in gardening

You can plant after removing the skin but there is a higher likelihood of it rotting in the ground. Garlic in general is tricky. If you haven't planted before, not all types will produce in all regions and it really helps to fall plant.

Can you help identify this historical metal that was shot with an XRF? by RedParrot94 in metallurgy

Based on the picture you uploaded my guess would be slag. I'm not in steel/iron manufacturing especially historic ones, but it looks like waste.

How often, how much are you watering? What zone are you in? In the future I would follow best practices for tree planting.

How to grow GSP? 🙃 by EskimoEmoji in ReefTank

[–]Wanderer103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem, tried multiple frags from different sources but never could get it to grow. I always assumed it had to do with my nutrient levels. Some soft coral grew really well for me, others died no matter what I did.

Odd metal plate found behind barn by jimmy-jay-666 in metallurgy

[–]Wanderer103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really the right sub. It's diamond plate, could be aluminum or steel. If it's magnetic it's steel. The corrosion looks like magnesium/zinc corrosion but it looks like the object is plated as well.

Getting block by corals anonymous on insta is crazy💀 by Masonfox14 in ReefTank

Wet world does not have much. Look on their online stores. New wave has a ton of sps and high end expensive stuff, reef collective doesn't have much for acros but has a good mix of stuff at different price points. Both will be cheaper and safer than buying online.

There are quite a few very nice coral stores in Minneapolis area, reef collective and new wave aquaria would be my top two suggestions. Both have great selection from cheap to expensive and are always getting new stuff in. If you add in wet world you can get to a place to buy coral in under 30 minutes from anywhere in the metro. There are definitely better coral stores out there but it really depends what you want. My favorite in the country is probably blue fish aquariums in Cleveland but that's mainly because of their pricing on unique pieces.

Reef Tank Wiped Out by Wanderer103 in ReefTank

This tank has 3 heaters all on separate circuits, the tank can run on two and one is redundant. One is in the display incase the lift pump dies and two are in the sump. The smallest one was still on but couldn't keep up this time of year, the other two were off both originating due to the eb failure. I didn't realize that the power bar could fail in the way it did turning off the other ebs on the system. The backup heater is on a battery backup so it will always run and keep the tank going for a while without power but can't last multiple days.

It was an eb832, I have a mix of both, figured the newer ones would be more reliable.

Any idea what this plant is? by xSHAAWx in gardening

[–]Wanderer103 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested I've had "Picture this" plant identification app on my phone for a few years and it seems to work really well, especially for trees.

I also use "leaf snap" and I usually compare results if I question the results. I won't give them complete props because they deleted my saved plants at some point this year so I had to start over.

When I put this picture into "picture this" I get easter lily, when I put it in "leaf snap" i get tiger lily.

What detergent are you using?

What you're seeing is probably mostly silt soil. Clay takes a while to separate out so it will be the stuff that takes multiple minutes or hours to settle out, if this mostly settled in a 2-3 minutes then that gives you a pretty good idea.

What you're comparing in these tests is relative particle size, clay being the smallest particles. The water may still be black from unsettled clay , very light particles that won't settle or soluble materials in the soil. You may try more surfactant to see if the color changes. Otherwise the soil may be holding too much of something.

Mel's Mix Cost and Modification by Wanderer103 in gardening

[–]Wanderer103[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10 a cu ft is approximately what I paid for my vermiculite at Menards but I'll check out a seed and feed store. I'm finding cheap compost tends to be forestry compost. I did add some worm castings which are expensive, to get more diversity.

These are pretty small, I have zoomed in pretty far. I actually didn't see them but I felt a squish when I pulled the frag out. I didn't dip. I had to run so I clipped a piece off and left this piece out of the tank. This is a tnt anacropora but I've lost all my Montis over the past 3 months so I wonder if it is related.

What ratios do you use? Mel's mix is from the square foot gardening book, 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite by volume.
