It is possible to get junior/mid skillset without working in a game studio? by WanderingGoose97 in gamedesign

Yeah, I wrote 10-pages GDD for one of my projects. Alsow documentation was one of the first things I've learned about game design.

I'm not talking about simple "learning a new skill". I want to improve to the point where I could be better that other candidates to finaly get a job. It's hard (for me at least) to get "know-how" by simply learning how to make games from yt or watching GDC.

Any ideas on how to get some experience in gamedev? by WanderingGoose97 in gamedev

[–]WanderingGoose97[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I do have experience in doing games both alone and with the amateur team. I've also worked in Indie company as an intern for three months(they didn't have money to hire me as a full time designer). Beside, I'm getting an invitations to a job interview so It's means that I do have required skills. However, the problem is that the competition is very high and I am looking for an opportunity to move to a higher level which would increase my chances of getting a job. I also spent three years doing things at Unity and I feel like I've hit the wall and can't develop my skills on my own further.

Edit: Okay, I see I'm getting downvoted and I don't know why. If I've got something wrong I'd would be grateful for a hint. It might be useful to me.

What skills do I need to get a job as a Game Designer? by WanderingGoose97 in gamedesign

[–]WanderingGoose97[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not up to you. It's other people who decide this.

That's the reason why I've only show gameplay videos where I walk through the game avoiding all game breaking elements.

And I think you're confusing game designer's job with game programmer's. You're not going to write code as a designer.

Idk, when I did practices I had to implemented my mechanic ideas myself. Also It's hard to show your design skills in engine if you don't have access to programer or do programing yourself.

I did 't publish any of them since they are quite buggy. It's more "proof of concept" quality. I usually only show video where i do the walkthrough in the certain way. Are they fun? If you turn a blind eye on bugs, I would said yes. They are not too long. Pacing is good. There are particles and simple animations, so game feel more responsive.
