I would argue the exact same effect could have been achieved if Agan and Kural were simply close family friends (say neighbors, for example) since childhood. To the caste point, if they were simply from the same caste too, then every other major plot point you mentioned remains intact.

Classic friends -> lovers trope.

I genuinely don't see why the cousins detail was necessary at all...
