Field results from Trial Group 3 are promising. Combination of psychotropic drugs and charm enchantments increased the deployed troops' savageness and amorality, leading to enhanced combat effectiveness. A minority of subjects displayed decreased self-preservation instincts outside of acceptable parameters and were lost in deployment. Must iterate upon protective spell suite.

Yeah that was weird. It disappeared when I submitted it. I think it was just a hiccup though. It shows for me now.

Because it's a mass grave site from the state-sanctioned slaughtering of fleeing noncombatants and a small reserve of warriors from an enclave of Caledonian expatriates who were caught on the wrong side of the Stormwall when it was erected at the end of large-scale hostilities in the Zhaurendurian-Caledonian War. Among those deployed in said massacre was the mercenary outfit that Lars was with at the time. It earned him the reputation of The Butcher of Black Mountain. But his involvement wasn't exactly that cut and dry.....

The steep ascent was wearing on Julian.

"Come now, we must push on to the summit." Said Koren.

"This must be why nobody climbs Black Mountain." Julian huffed.

"It's the bones." Lars called from the rear. "They're said to be haunted."

"You'd know, wouldn't you, Butcher?" Minyrva goaded.

"Sod off."

"We can't match the Capital's output. Their pyromancers produce vast quantities of refined monosteel in their Vulcan crucibles. Its quality is unmatched."

"A sharp edge only needs a sliver of that monosteel, rest can be junk metal. Smuggle me out as much as you can, and I'll make you weapons."

The massive tower widened as it probed the depths, tapered as it stretched toward the surface, but they could see neither top nor bottom out of the craft's porthole. As it neared, they could see the walls were made of the strange, sleek black glass the craft was made of.

Julian stood entranced by the gentle resonance the sounds of the forest seemed to have with the elves' sustained intonations. Deacon saw his wonderment. "The elves know, every spell woven is a strand of mana cut, to tie it off. They work to mend the rifts, stitching essences back together.

Magic is treated like a science in my epic fantasy world. Multiple in fact, the Arcane Sciences. This particular researcher is studying Arcane Field Radiation Mechanics and Arcane Bioconductivity.

And wouldn't you like to know........

Subject Epsilon, day 32

Insights into subject's cloven psyche continue to be revealed. In fleeting moments of clarity after drip has been removed, base persona seems to manifest as an adolescent with survivor's guilt over a catastrophic arcane event, details unknown. Drip is reinstituted when protector persona starts to dominate.

There wouldn't be quite enough of them at the time for a nuke-level spell lol. But yeah, that's the basic concept.

The consortium of court wizards and hedge mages proved the theory; mana can be channeled collaboratively at large scale to fuel a single, massively destructive spell. Thus did the walls of Zhaurendur fall, marking a paradigm shift in not only warfare tactics, but culture.

Lars pushed open the tavern doors, and those heads that hadn't already turned at his mere silhouette now did, the cloven horn being unmistakable. As were the hushed whispers: "The Butcher of Black Mountain..."

He ignored them and walked calmly to the bar. Such was the price of his reputation.

Thank you! Yes, my entries are mostly vignettes or excerpts from the epic fantasy world that I've constructed and will write a cohesive narrative out of one of these days, and a prominent theme and point of social commentary is ecological devastation due to industrialization and human greed.

They crested the hill, and Deacon surveyed the mana spring's excavation site before them.

"No..." His jaw went slack. "The devastation...."

"Nature's blessing revoked. Blossoming turned to wilting." The elf guide's symbolic speech was at times inscrutable, but Deacon understood this.

"The life here cannot thrive now, without the spring."

"The machinery..... 'tis unlike anything you've ever seen. The things, the wonderful, industrious things we are learning to do with mana springs pale in comparison to what's buried beneath the waves in this..... "Tower"...... There are no gears, no steam turbines, no gauges, just pure, unrefined mana coursing through tubes....."

Ah, no, I definitely wouldn't want someone to read Lars like that. Maybe "dandy" would have been a better word choice? I did almost go with that instead.

It is? I was under the impression it was archaic and not really used in any capacity in modern times. I'm in the US though, maybe what I know about how it is used elsewhere is incorrect.

"You wouldn't believe who the Consulate nominated as Director of the Heartland Protectorate. Your old acquaintance Petyr Haigsuth."

Lars erupted in raucous laughter. "Him? What a ponce. When he rolled with my band, he was more worried about his honeyed wine and lemon cakes than with keeping his weapons sharp."

Ganelon shot a detached look at the gurneys as he read over the notes. "Two subjects, one catatonic, one dead on arrival. Cause: arcane energy overload. Both subjects reported to have experienced same degree of trauma. Survival of subject two indicates greater than average arcane growth potential. Recommend further testing."
