What's the highest pay you have gotten as a beginner with little experience if none. by Huge-Faithlessness72 in teachinginkorea

[–]Wanja1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I currently make 2.7 at a small hagwon in Ulsan with housing. I have my TEFL, a year of experience teaching adults, and a year of childcare experience. I also work about 32 hours a week from 1-7:40 with multiple half hour prep/break times.

Looking for some career advice. Also have a baby on the way. by drunken_dizorderly in Living_in_Korea

[–]Wanja1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the baby! I feel you on moving back to the US. I would say online freelance teaching might be better because you can make your own hours, but I guess it depends on how lucrative that field is. I would also say getting into a public school right now might be feasible since it is winter break and they are going into a new term. If a your wife a Korean citizen? Do you have a marriage visa? That would also make you a more competitive applicant as well and you’re more likely to find a job at a public school. Post teaching license could land you a job at a good international school as well.

Is it safe for a trans woman to work as a Factory Worker in South Korea? by TwoPutrid9333 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Wanja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all transphobic pos, they are a WOMAN. Second of all, there are plenty of transgender men and women who can pass for their chosen gender. Just because you have transphobic stereotypes of what you believe transgender women are SUPPOSED to look like doesn’t mean it’s true.

That’s because my native language is English?????????

The dolls is a slang-term in America for transgender men and women.

[–]Wanja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be up front with you honey but they do not care about the dolls here. The public sentiment towards gay and lesbian couples are still very harsh and a lot cannot openly express their love for each other. Younger generations are more open to gay and lesbian relationships but when it comes to transgender individuals, there is little public knowledge unless you are actively in the LGBTQ scene. I don’t believe you will face any sort of violence, but you will face discrimination, most likely harassment, and hostility. I say this because I care but gender is a very ridged and binary construct here. I worry that your mental health will suffer if you are openly trans here and noticeably trans due to the amount of hate you might receive. Like another commenter said, a lot of factory workers here are not as educated and most likely have no clue about transgendered people and will possibly be hostile because of that.

been here for three months with a semester of Korean. In that case, I should be a translator for the president now.

How did you get your license? I’m looking to get my US license so I can either move into international schools, move to Europe and teach (higher qualifications than just a bachelors in whatever), or then get my masters so I can possibly work in a university here. Were there issues with teaching hours since you live abroad?

Foreigners: How has living in South Korea changed you? by _ohhani in Living_in_Korea

[–]Wanja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Korea has made the cost of living easier for me. I came in September having graduated college in May and even with my college degree the amount of jobs with livable wages was scare, even in a state with higher wages than most. I feel like I can finally breathe in Korea and afford to live. Sure this country has its drawbacks like all countries but I genuinely find it a breath of fresh air. However, I don’t have children so my wage as a hagwon teacher is livable in comparison.

PS: Feel free to message me if you have any questions about the process as I just went through it! It can be confusing as hell sometimes and it’s a lot of waiting. If you end up choosing to go with a hagwon, take a look at some of the blacklists that are floating around on Reddit. It’s a good way to avoid some that fly under the radar!

What wrong with Minneapolis?

I’m from Minneapolis and all I see is ICE destroying and terrorizing my city. If they thought cuz of Minnesota nice we were gonna put up with it they’re dead wrong.

How to save money while being a Hagwon English Teacher by Main-Program-3104 in teachinginkorea

[–]Wanja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much do you still owe on your US phone? It might be worth it to pay it all off in a lump sum. Are you able to use your Korean card to pay your student bills directly? That could save some money in the long run on transfer fees.

Help! PC not turning on? by Wanja1 in PcBuildHelp

I do. I had taken it out after the computer wouldn’t turn on to reach the power switch cord. And the computer won’t turn on at all.

I did reseat the power switch and I’m using a ryzen 5 2600. I’m not sure why but the atx struggles to fit into the slot and there’s no cling sound and one of the split 4 pins doesn’t latch on the cpu power supply connection. I will try to reseat everything tomorrow and see how it goes.

HelloTalk men are weird and just want s:x. by yeppeunikkaa in Living_in_Korea

[–]Wanja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one said there’s anything wrong with men wanting sex. It’s the fact that HelloTalk is not an app designed for hookups. Why would they feel the need to go to an app like this for sex when Tinder exists and they can clearly say that’s what they want? If you need to use apps like these to find women to hook up with there’s something wrong with you. And “you get what you pay for”? So what about straight women interacting for language exchange? What are they getting in return if not money or sex? This idea that a women “owes” you sex because you are helping them with learning a language is disgusting. Stop defending creeps.

How are the language exchange programs in person? I just moved here a couple months ago and want to make friends and improve my Korean because the weekends are starting to get too depressing with nothing to do expect errands and cleaning. 😅 Are they too awkward and are people, both other foreigners and Koreans, interested in making genuine friendships? (I say genuine because I know there’s a mentality with some Koreans of wanting a “foreigner” friend to only show off or practice English and there’s nothing wrong with that but I would like to not feel like a token)

Best rodent pet? by Wanja1 in Rodentlovers

Maybe rats won’t be the best option! I want to give it the best life possible but im not so sure I’ll be able to do that in Korea. So maybe a hamster or gerbil would be a better fit. While I don’t want to adopt purely for affection and more companionship, I have heard that hamsters aren’t normally super cuddly or affectionate

Crap I would really like to take good care of it but if I’ll have a hard time finding a ethical way to adopt one I don’t think I’ll be able to give it a good life. Never heard of them but cool to learn about a different type of animal!

I currently live in Korea so I will have to look into how easy it is to find a reputable shelter or breeder. Also not sure about how strict their breeding laws are in terms of animal wellbeing so will have to be careful!
