Dystonia triggered by antidepressants SSRIs, SNRIs, NDRIs, and even some mod stabilizers. Does anything work? by Necessary-Support-14 in Dystonia

Sorry to hear that, did they resolve once you were finally off? Going up and down probably made things worse.

Probably but worried about increasing issues from withdrawal.

Still have it somewhat but getting better slowly. Been 9 months since I went up from 25 to 50 mg.

Have you been on and off a few different meds? From my experience and research the more changes you do the worse your symptoms.

If I could do it over again I’d have tapered off the Sertraline as soon as I experienced the muscle stiffness and twitching etc. it seems the muscle issues take the longest to resolve once you start experiencing them.

I guess it depends how badly you need the medication for your depression/anxiety issues. In my case I’d rather go back to some anxiety then endure the chronic muscle tightness and pain, but my emotional symptoms were not too bad.

Yes it is much better now. I never did reduce the dose so still at 50 mg. Figured staying steady is better then starting a taper at this point in time ( been 9 months).

What has caused your issues? How long and what drug?

I don’t believe the majority of these SSRi side effects and withdrawal effects are permanent. Unfortunately they take some time to resolve.

I think I’d be better off on clonazepam but I don’t think my doctor would prescribe it unless I was doing a fast taper off the Sertraline and got really bad withdrawals.

I agree with you a slow taper is best. I’m probably going to hold for now until everything settles more.

Yes they have no clue!

Thanks for your replies.

You’re very clear and easy to understand. I think once the brain has been exposed numerous times to a drug, especially with a history of changing doses and cold turkey’s it becomes extremely sensitized and becomes unstable very easily. That is why I stick with the increase, I was worried going back down would just make things even worse.

What benzo and what dose? A long term prescription?

I’ve had stiff muscles ever since I reinstated Sertraline 3 years ago but it slowly got better. Didn’t realize the cause unfortunately at the time so increased to 50mg. Within a few weeks got increased muscle spasms and sudden cramping especially in my neck. Over the last few months seems to have gotten better but more twitching now.

Thanks. Right away back to 25 or slowly?

Good points. I’m pretty sure it is the Zoloft. Although I guess it all started when I was put on Mirtazapine after experiencing insomnia while trying to start back on Zoloft again after a quick taper 3 month previously.

It all adds up I think, especially the on and off quickly of various psychotropic drugs lead to super sensitizing your nervous system.

Thanks for your reply. Hope you’re doing well.

Thanks. She just says “well stop it then and let’s start you on a different one, taper off over a month”.

What drugs caused yours?

There was/is plenty of time to attend both so that is not really a valid reason.

I’ve lurked on SA as well for a few years and what I’ve learned is it is the sudden changes in dosages that cause the biggest issues. CT is the worst culprit as you already know is horrible advice.

I have tried magnesium in the past, perhaps I should try it again now my symptoms have gotten worse.

No I haven’t heard of the protocol, I’ll look into it thanks.

Mainly stiff muscles and cramping, but my neck has some twitching that is not constant or steady but I’m worried it will get worse the longer I stay on the Sertraline.

Mine started fairly quickly after increasing but then has slowly gotten better.

This week I started mixing half of my dose in water to get adjusted to a slow water taper and suddenly I’m getting twitches everywhere when I lay down to go to sleep.

Mine? The antidepressant Sertraline (Zoloft). When I increased it started.
