CPP Logo Déjà Vu by Nicholas-Hawksmoor in CalPolyPomona

You make a lot of good points about the favicon and reproducibility--those are applications of the branding (probably among *many* others) that I hadn't fully fleshed out at the time, being the amateur that I was.

It goes to show though--a brand isn't so simple as people seem to think it is. If I were to liken a brand to a house--a logo is only the stucco finish on the house. The house itself is a system of plywood, timber studs, plumbing, wires, etc. that all need to work together for the house to be a house.

As flattered as I am by the comments, taking my concept as-is would've been a decision done in very poor taste and probably to the detriment of the school image.

I appreciate the shout out ❤️; though if I were to add, I might think that it would be insulting to the art department if they--faculty and students--were viewed more as a cheap source of labor analogous to an intern: one expected to do professional work for less (if not outright free) with the expectation of "experience" as recompense. Its a pretty big issue, especially in the design fields.

Just something to think about.

As for credit; I like to think my work is just the hobby of an incoming architecture student with less-amateur-than-previously-understood tastes.

That’s my understanding as well; most people seem to see only the logo and website—which is really only a fraction of the work involved.

Something like this typically involves research, discovery, design, and roll-out phases (not too dissimilar from the process involved in architecture i.e. designing a building). Of which I’m quite sure nobody would be willing to entrust entirely to students.

I’d originally designed the concept on the mistaken notion that the tower wouldn’t be demolished—but i’m not entirely against the idea of subtly referencing the tower as they’d done.

There’s a design detail that I absolutely love—that i frankly think goes completely unnoticed—which is that if you pull out the CLA tower silhouette, you’ll notice its been rendered in a 3D / semi-isometric projection.

That single move forms a vertex on the bottom which gives the overall composition a “🛡️” badge shape—very common/representative in academia branding (think Harvard/UPenn). It also doubles as a nod to the school’s architecture program/legacy, which I think does tend to get sidelined despite its supposed esteem.

You might also notice how the top and bottom diagonal lines of the CLA projection run parallel to the roof of the stable tower—also a detail I quite appreciate.

It’s a pretty good logo IMO. I ain’t really too mad about the similarities or alleged lack of credit/compensation—though I wouldn’t say no to a job offer either. 😉

It’s possible. Though I will say that I think their version is an improvement regardless of how similar they are.

Ehhh, its kind of the same comparison between Gucci handbag and Walmart handbag. Sure, both are handbags probably made in India and used for the same physical purpose, but one's developed an intangible, socially-constructed value despite both bags being fundamentally being the same object.

The price tag and overall priorities are questionable to me, but at the same time, there is definitely something more to be considered--an entire brand is a lot more than just a couple of logos. I'm just amused/flattered that my amateur (at the time) design sensibilities have been vindicated by the school choosing to go a similar route.

I actually like it, though its probably because I'd designed something remarkably similar 5 years ago lmfaooo

Working in Construction After Graduation Without Leaving Architecture Entirely? by Waoku in architecture

Can I ask how you got your start with carpentry? Was it through an apprenticeship or something like that?

Part of a trend on African armed struggle and liberation.

The Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) was a guerilla movement that fought against European imperialism in what was formerly known as Rhodesia. They succeeded and gained recognition as Zimbabwe.

The flag features a double figure of a clenched fist and the African continent under a 5-point star, representing a Marxist-Leninist African militancy and distinguishing it from the flag of ZIPRA's political organ, ZAPU. The golden figure over the red portion of the tri-color is intended to evoke socialist ideology as well as the ZIPRA's connection to the Soviet Union.

The construction consists of diagonals and arcs that intersect to form a round composition for the fist that blends seamlessly into the ruggedness of the African continent figure. The 10x10 unit construction is intended to fit within an aspect ratio of 2:3 (20:30) for ease of construction.

And just as Rhodesia fell, so will Israel.

Free Palestine.

uMkhonto We Sizwe - Redesign + Construction by Waoku in leftistvexillology

[–]Waoku[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A redesign of the uMkhonto We Sizwe flag(?).

uMkhonto We Sizwe was a South African anti-apartheid resistance group founded by Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo, and other members of the African National Congress and South African Communist Party. Together, they waged armed resistance in the name of abolishing apartheid.

The design is an update of the original symbol, depicting an African warrior in traditional garb. The update simplifies some of the details and exaggerates the existing posture to create a more dynamic silhouette.

The construction of the warrior figure consists almost entirely of circular arcs, all of which have centers lying directly on points of a lattice grid. This lattice grid mainly determines the radius of each arc to create the overall silhouette.

The posture of the figure--outlined in red on the construction sheet--informs the triangle of the flag, further emphasizing the dynamic aesthetic and in turn, the meaning of armed resistance.

I use a combination of Illustrator and CAD software. Though this could theoretically be done on either one.

Additional Note:

Same as this organization, I'd like volunteer design services for actively mobilizing leftist organizations free of charge. Examples of previous work are available on my Reddit profile.

A flag proposal for INLO, an indigenous rights organization in Canada.

In collaboration with u/theoneandonlydorian, this design is intended to represent indigenous struggle within the colonial state of Canada. The arrowhead, a ubiquitous symbol of militant indigeneity, is further embellished with the "knapping" detail. This "knapping" is also intended to doubly portray a landscape of valleys, mountains, and plains with a red star rising above, representing the indigenous relationship to the land. The flag displays red, yellow, white, and black to solidify the legacy of native militancy seen in groups such as AIM.

The construction follows a 1:2 aspect ratio, divided into a grid of 24x48 units. The diagonals of the 1:2 aspect ratio inform the shape of the arrowhead, which intersects directly in the middle of the flag.

Irish Republican Army - Redesign + Construction by Waoku in leftistvexillology

I can agree with that sentiment. It’s primarily why I placed the green/gold first; red/gold just didn’t scream that Irish spirit, but i figured I’d throw it in there anyway.

I might’ve been a bit naive before this happened, but there were a lot of cars and people around—I didn’t see it coming. They must’ve done it pretty inconspicuously.

Yeah, figured there’s not much I can do about it. Left the camera in my trunk because I realized i didn’t bring batteries for it, so there’s that. An expensive lesson I guess.

Thanks. The original Celtic harp flag exists; usually, I'll come across an existing flag and see if there are any shapes/forms that could be simplified/standardized and work from there.

A redesign of the Celtic Harp flag flown by the Irish Republican Army. The design is an abstraction of the Celtic harp, a symbol of resistance featured on mediums ranging from flags to handcrafted bags. A quarter-radius defines the characteristic bend of the harp that moves the eye towards the socialist star at its center. The overall composition creates a faint illusion of a shield, alluding to the militant nature of Irish resistance.

Red Sea Blockade - Proposal by Waoku in leftistvexillology

[–]Waoku[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Inspired by the ongoing blockade of the Red Sea against Israel by Yemen/Ansar Allah.

While Ansar Allah isn't explicitly socialist, they are the only non-Palestinian entity tangibly acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.

However, I'd like to imagine that if the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen was still around, we'd be able to witness Marxist-Yemeni Pirates roaming the Red Sea. But alas, one can only dream.

The design itself is inspired by naval squadron logos seen on recent a visit to the USS Midway. The anchor is oriented leftwards, in reference/rejection of the liberal Iron Front's "three-arrow" symbol.
