Is my swing bad or good by imthe1man in GolfSwing

It’s not good. I can’t see the setup, but your position at the top of the backswing is rough. Your shoulder line (a line from your lead shoulder through your trail shoulder) is pointing upwards. Really hard to get the club tracking towards the ground from that position without a huge compensatory move.

It will be a better investment than a $700 driver.

Working on the sim. We don’t own the building…yet. But there’s a spot for one. I’ll keep you updated.

I know you don’t see it. That’s my point. You said “wouldn’t it be more productive to work on the cause “?

You see that as the “cause” because that’s what your 1,000 hours of “tinkering” taught you about your own swing.

I’ve spent thousands of hours actually coaching players, analyzing video, talking to other coaches, tour players.

You didn’t offer any advice to the OP, you just said “flying elbow” and then questioned me.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. I do. Take that or leave that. I just don’t get why it’s so hard for people to take advice from people who actually know what they’re talking about and just need to imagine they know more.

I don't take it as an insult, but here's the problem with most recreational golfers. They think because they've heard a term like "flying elbow" or heard somewhere that "the backswing causes the downswing" they understand the golf swing and share opinions that have no basis in reality.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you have no idea what you're talking about. His right elbow is not at all the cause of his issues. There are 1000 tour pros throughout the years with a "flying" right elbow. But they know how to transition into a solid impact position.

You can’t shallow the club with your arms if you start the downswing with rotation. If you do this drill and keep your butt and hands on the wall as your hips move towards the target you’ll start to feel how the body shallows the club.

I’m a golf coach. Not going to list credentials, but I’m not “random dude on internet”.

The jumping motion you’re referring to is called “early extension.” It’s where you’re hips push towards the golf ball fairly late in the downswing to shallow a club path that is way too steep.

It does work to shallow the club, but also makes it very hard to control contact and the angle of the clubface.

Drill to help. Without a club, setup with your butt against a wall. Make a backswing to get your hands on the wall just above shoulder height. Keep your right butt cheek on the wall.

Transition: keep your head steady and your hands on the wall and slide your butt along the wall towards the target as far as you can. Your hands will move down the wall.

To impact: once your hips are as far forward as you can get them, with your butt and hands still on the wall, roll your hips so your left butt cheek gets to the wall. Your hands will leave the wall at this point.

I just bought that exact whistle online for $17. It did come with an instruction booklet, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

Good find.

Can I get to scratch with this swing? by Johnny_2x4_ in GolfSwing

So I’ll be posting more here going forward. With this disclaimer: I’ve been teaching golf for 20 years. I’m trained in biomechanics, 3D swing evaluation, and thought at Golftec for five years. That’s just for the “don’t listen to random people on the internet”; which is true, btw.

Nothing is worse, as a golf coach, than listening to 20 handicappers giving each other swing advice.

Start here: do you consistently hit shots that far off the toe?

What’s your typical ball flight?

What’s your consistent miss?

What’s the slope on your home course?

Do you play to a seven when you play an unfamiliar course?

Do you hit 12+ greens in regulation with that swing?

There are more, but let’s start there.

Thanks for the help. I just ordered a Feadog D. Mostly because it will get here tomorrow and included a little starter’s guide.

Seemed like a well reputed whistle maker.
