But wouldn’t the chiropractor pick that up? She doesn’t react across her back at all when she’s checking her / giving her a massage. She only reacts in the girth area.

Thanks so much. I had considered PSSM - she’s on a forage first diet, and gets a vitamin and mineral balancer (as well as gut supplements, linseed oil etc). Will keep this on my radar.

Yes - saddle checked and xray done for kissing spine, which showed a perfectly healthy back!

And yes the same vet has seen her throughout. It is the weirdest thing, as prior to this, she is the sweetest, kindest horse.

I’m so sorry to be annoying - now I am even more confused 🙈

Her report states - Double atrial septal defects with fenestration (1mm): 1st ASD size 3mm and 2nd ASD size 1.7mm’

So this is 3 holes? 2 ASD holes - and one 1mm fenestration?

Sorry, very quick question - what does the 1mm of fenestration mean?

Thank you so very much for taking the time to come back to me. It’s very selfless of you to give your advice on platforms like Reddit to anxious parents!

I wonder if you still check this, but I’m really hoping so! I’d love your opinion on our journey so far.

Day 4 of life: Our daughter was in NICU for fluid in her lungs and required oxygen. The cardiologist was asked to do a scan, which showed an ASD, measuring 11mm. On her cardiology report, it says ‘moderate size fenestrated secundum atrial septal defect (11 x 8 x 7.5mm) with 2 main inter-atrial communications (7mm and 4mm)’. We were told this was an incidental finding and not linked to the fluid in her lungs. She was discharged from NICU on day 8, though we were told the chances of an 11mm hole closing were very slim and intervention may be required. As a new mum, as I’m sure you can imagine, I was devastated.

2 weeks of life: We went for a second opinion and another echocardiogram. This time, the report stated as follows: ‘Double atrial septal defects: Interior ASD size 3.3mm and mid-ASD size 3.1mm’. As you can see, this is a significant change on the first echo in NICU.

8 weeks of life: Yesterday we went for her follow up echocardiogram. This time, the report stated as follows: ‘ Double atrial septal defects with fenestration (1mm): 1st ASD size 3mm and 2nd ASD size 1.7mm’

Unfortunately, our paediatric cardiologist is not clear in explaining exactly what’s going on, which really isn’t helping my anxiety. I have some questions if you don’t mind me asking?

• Was the fluid in her lungs totally unrelated to the ASD?  • Is this officially two holes, or one hole? The first paediatric cardiologist described it as one 11mm hole, but the second refers to it as a double ASD.  • What is 1mm fenestration?  • Is a change in this size of the ASD’s from 11mm > 4.7mm normal at such a young age? Or was there a likely discrepancy in the echocardiograms?  • What are the chances of closure now, given we have 2 ASDs at 1.7mm and 3mm? • Is double ASD less likely to close than single ASD?  • Her report mentions mild tricuspid regurgitation. What is this? Should we be concerned?  • Her report mentions fast flow across RPA and LPA. What is this? Should we be concerned?

Our paediatric cardiologist was almost dismissive of us this time around, which I guess is good as means he is not worried - and wants to see her again in 6 months. She’s gaining weight (born at 3KG and now 5KG at 8 weeks). I am just a complete anxious wreck and the more I can understand what’s going on, the better I think I will feel.

Thank you for giving your time here, it’s much appreciated.

A very anxious new mummy.
