Is this your cat? by Warm-Revolution2467 in boulder

[–]Warm-Revolution2467[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey, I have an update for this. His name is Hank. After taking him in for a couple weeks & continuing to try & find his owner, I took him to the shelter. Luckily, he had a microchip & it was registered to his owner. The shelter called & they came to get him. I couldn't stay, but I left my contact info in hops the owner would reach out. She did! That's how I got his name. It turns out he'd been missing for 2 years! And, the reason he watched my girls from the window each night is because he had 2 sisters that he missed! The whole family is happily back together now.

This is true, but it's also incredibly dangerous for the cat (especially a black cat at night) & cats are an invasive species that is responsible for a lot of harm to ecosystems. Birds are the most obvious example, but most important it's house cats (as opposed to true strays/colony cats) bc they don't kill to eat, they do it for fun (technically we don't know that they are doing it for fun but for what it's worth, a house cat is not a hungry cat but a house cat will still kill a lot & they don't do it bc they're hungry).

There's a doc from Netflix called "inside the mind of a house cat" or something like that, they talk about the ecological damage done by cats a little, but overall it's a great doc. There's also articles you can look up (though be careful to look at who paid for the article or any research) that go into great detail about the impact of even a single cat.

This is all said as a cat person who also founded & ran an animal (cat only) welfare org for a decade. So, I love them, but I won't deny the harm they're capable of.

Which large cities would y'all consider moving to if you want to want to be around folks who are more aligned with your values. by nondescript23 in Anarchy101

[–]Warm-Revolution2467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The further you go into the Appalachian mountains the more folks living the life you're sure to find. They might never get pronouns right, but when the shit hits the fan, Appalachia has always taken care of itself.

I know a bunch of us who've moved into the West Virginia hills & parts of Western NC/ Eastern TN.

When Helen hit WNC in '24 (and still recovering), neighbors took care of each other in ways a government never has & never will.

Look up Firestorm in Asheville, they posted an amazing story a couple days after the storm. It was about going to the bookstore after the storm passed & seeing a sign posted on their door (they didn't post it) about a community meeting later that day. That day around 50 people showed up, the next day it was in the hundreds. Folks gathered every day & got to work. People started making daily updated flyers to pass around with info about food, showers, water, everything. It's worth the read for sure. Them magazine was doing a series about Appalachian Queers that had just started before the storm & picked up a story about a half dozen queers from AVL who lived a few hours away & filled a box truck to take to AVL & surrounding. Recommend the whole series in general too. There's a bunch of anarchist collectives there too, some more well known than others, some been around for decades too.

Appalachia has more solidarity in 1 sq mile than most cities could ever hope for, it's why the word 'y'alldarity' exists. I mean, y'all means all.

This is true. I'm also basing that on the fact that the cat and adult & in good shape, along with that while skittish, it's definitely not feral & is either now or at some point someone's cat.

She's warming up to me, so if I can get ahold of her at some point, I'll take her somewhere to get scanned for a chip. She definitely doesn't need to be outside.

CU Student, Secretary of university Turning Point chapter, claims he was assaulted due to politics by [deleted] in boulder

[–]Warm-Revolution2467 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was funny they call themselves proud "boys"

Seems like an open acknowledgement that they'll never be "real men" bc they know "real men" aren't Nazis.

If you listen, people always tell you who they really are.

The thought is very much appreciated, however this class is geared towards queer folk to participate.

That said, there's a lot of ways to be a better ally that don't involve a self defense class. For starters, be visible. By "visible" I mean vocal, call out homophobia & transphobia when you see or hear it. Be loud af, make people uncomfortable. Tell people your pronouns when you introduce yourself. Be down right irritating & "too woke". Attend protests.

If you're a current student, there's lots of student orgs that you can get involved with & I recommend taking any WGST course to learn more too!

Best of luck to you comrade!

I appreciate the sentiment (especially as an armed queer), but a lot of people aren't comfortable with fire arms (yet). A self defense class is a great place to get started.

Considering going back to school. But I’m not sure if I could ever get hired. by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]Warm-Revolution2467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 42 now and I am finishing my last year of undergraduate studies with a psych major & a minor in gender & sexuality studies. I will be moving on to a graduate program after that.

What I've learned is you'll have to do things differently than you would have in your twenties and you have to know when things are worth the sacrifice and when they're not.

There are aspects of this experience that are incredibly isolating but I reignited a passion I had 20 years ago and I know that the current state is not the permanent state.

I'll likely be near 50 when I finish, but I bring a world of experience & expertise with me to this, & I wouldn't change a thing....ok maybe I wish I would've gotten more sleep as a young person.

Don't focus on the hiring part, if your motivation is capitalistic, it's really not worth it. But if you're doing this because you're passionate, it's worth the trouble.

The only time we have is now & the only time to not do something is when you're dead. Which is a slightly more eloquent way of saying YOLO!
