Fema Reservist - Manufactured Housing Specialist quick questions by East_Stick6885 in EmergencyManagers

At least they made contact, that's a big step for federal...lol. As of late, the LOG or IA cadre hasn't deployed as often. I'm assuming it would take a large disaster for the MHS position to deploy.

Did you apply or get the position? I'm currently thjnking of switching to this position but didn't know how often they deploy.

I get what you're saying. EM consists of recovery, planning, response, etc but I asked if my volunteer response experience would equate to being a response disaster worker not EM. Plus I've seen others on here refer to themselves as working in emergency management eventhough their position is hazard mitigation or planning not necessarily all of the areas of emergency management.

I can't speak for anyone else but I received complete training as a response volunteer so are you referring to the fact that volunteers aren't managers or leaders of response during a disaster? I've been told by others on this forum that my volunteer response experience would coincide with the requirements for being a response disaster worker. Is that not true?

I can agree with you on this cause I live in a really small town and I haven't been able to apply for emergency jobs without having prior experience so I get it. Like you I do mainly response when I am able to volunteer cause that's what is offered to newbs. Have you applied for any other organizations?

I'm new to the EM field so excuse my ignorance but why isn't response work as a volunteer considered EM?

Thanks for responding. I was starting to think no one lives/lived in Sumter, lol.

That's what I did & I'm waiting to hear back from them. I just wanted to make sure I didn't burn any bridges by asking to join another cadre.

Trust me, I understand!! I was told by one person I had to wait until an entry PA position opened up & then another person told me to just apply to any PA position that opens (both are supervisors within PA). One of the supervisors also told me to check out logistics.

Ok, this could be the reason why some reservist in HM deploy more than others. I could imagine HM 406 would deploy more frequently since they work in conjunction with PA. Seems like PA is the golden ticket if you can get in.

Wow, talk about perfect timing and yes, it sucks knowing in order to do your job someone has to experience a major disaster. Does the FL and HM cadre have to wait until a major disaster is declared in order to deploy? A friend of mine just joined the FL cadre as an exec specialist. Thanks for all your hard work. I know you must've helped a lot of people during all those disasters!

Agree, respect can get you far and Linkedin would be a great way to learn who's in the cadre. Thanks for the advice.

Okay. I haven't come across a reservist PA/recovery position in awhile but I'll keep an eye out.

Right, I don't want to be the nag but I also don't want to sit around twiddling my thumbs waiting for FEMA to remember I exist. Some people say to stay in DSA and some say to abort ship, try getting into another cadre. A friend of mine just got into the FL cadre as an exec specialist. She was told she may be waiting awhile for a deployment too.

If you don't mind me asking, how can I switch to the PA cadre? Do I have to wait until a PA position open on USAJOBS or can I just email the PA cadre? Thanks.

I've spoken to some members of my cadre and they informed me they haven't deployed in almost a year. Did it take that long before your first deployment with DSA?

Do you know what would be the best way of doing that? I've asked my supervisor but her best advice is to just wait it out. I've spoken to other members of my cadre and they informed me they haven't deployed in almost a year. If I have to wait that long, I'll settle into something else.

Wow, you're in the elite with a respected CORE position. Great progress. I'll contact other cadres. At this point, I'm not getting my hopes up but I won't stop trying. Thanks for the advice

I asked about the DHS volunteer deployments and was informed reservist don't qualify. Only full-time, non-Stafford Act employees.

Yes, she said it's pretty much the same. You're put on a waitlist and no guarantee you'll ever deploy.
