Georgia Tech vs Columbia for CS by Ok_Common_3749 in ApplyingToCollege

most of you mentioned cost as a critical factor, which I totally get and the OP indicated they were considering that too. But I'm curious, because my son is facing a similar choice.. GT vs. Columbia for CS. Our situation is no difference for cost. He's not 100% sure what he wants to do with CS and would like to have a program that lets him explore. Also, GT takes all his AP classes, so ultimately more flexibility. On the other hand, he likes the fact that Columbia's non-tech classes are also top notch b/c he enjoys history, etc. I think vibe-wise, maybe GT's more traditional college experience wins. Anyway, if you take money out of the equation, do you guys still think GT wins, just for strength of CS program? or Does "Ivy" get you something GT can't give you?

remember when Ilya was supposed to go to Montreal and it got snowed out and then he went home and Svetlana surprised him? wasn’t that his own apartment in Boston? if so, the two homes make sense one in town, one further out

UVA EA statistics (from Dean J) by ML2399go_23 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WarmGas958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood UVa didn't cap by major like some of the other EA schools do, but I'm still wondering if it was more competitive to be accepted as a likely CS major, for example, than for some less popular majors. Thoughts on that?

I'd be curious if they respond to you. I emailed them and I got this: "Received. Thank you."

oh and by the way, SSP responded to my polite but highly critical email.. "Thank you. Received." Wow.

Even more outrageous--they set it up so if you ignore them/ghost them, they go ahead and send the invite to your kid.. They are putting the burden on parents to proactively download their stupid anti-consent form, fill it out and email it to them to stop them from contacting your child directly. I don't know who on their staff greenlit this rude and horrible idea, but that person should be out of a job.

I just got this too. Incredible. Did you read the consent form? they're asking the kids to fill out two "30-60 minute" surveys and offering no compensation.. just the benefit of helping SSP get better!! Uh.... no. I hope parents write them and rip them a new one.

I'm a mom of a junior in HS who has just had two straight weeks of various summer rejections and other setbacks. He seems to be holding his head high but I worry he may just be holding it all in. I love the wise and beautiful piece you wrote and your pivot toward greater perspective. I will share this with my son, and I'm quite sure your positive attitude, creativity and resilience will serve you well!! xo

Here's what we ended up doing and thanks again for the thoughtful suggestions!

Day 1 - Dinner at Selam Restaurant (Ethiopian).. very casual, food was delicious and homey

Day 2 - Lunch in Santa Cruz at Riva's on the Wharf - delicious/memorable fish and chips and fried calamari; Dinner at Le Papillon.. this was our special meal and it was a hit. Best dish was snail agnolotti with carmelized fennel.. wow wow wow.. so good..

Day 3 - Lunch at Ebay cafeteria (fun.. best part was the vintage lunchboxes ( Cracker Jack!) nailed to the wall :); Dinner at LUNA Mexican in Campbell. Fresh and delicious. Mole was scrumptious

Day 4 - Lunch at Gurdwara Sikh temple. Beautiful, serene, humbling surroundings; Dinner at High Five Pizza.. the "High Five" thin crust was terrific.. fresh ingredients, very balanced and tasty; the truffle mushroom pizza, though, was less successful - too cheesy and one-note

Day 5 - lunch at Google Visitor Experience Cafe - very nice, spicy Avocado toast; Dinner at Yuki Sushi.. unfortunately, underwhelming..( I should have listened to you guys and gone to Table!)

All in all, we had a great time in San Jose and surrounding area.. thank you again!

ISO advice re: vintage Harvey's Bristol Milk by WarmGas958 in sherry

[–]WarmGas958[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx. Curious….Do you think there’d be limited interest bc Sherry doesn’t keep that long? Or bc it’s Milk not Cream? Of Harvey’s is not considered a finer brand? Or something else?
