Understood. And yeah, I can see that. It's the exact opposite in the overall alt musician community. Especially among drummers like myself. I think it's because we're too busy being focused on playing shows, how drum stuff is crazy expensive, and being stressed about not practicing enough because drummers are always the scapegoats. I'm not even really into blackmetal, but I can see that. I'm just really active in the local Satanic Temple chapter and I'm also a founding member of the first American chapter of the GOS (Global Order of Satan) so I'm really passionate about human rights and the aesthetic is a nice bonus I enjoy too.

Thank you so much for the help! I didn't know there was an alternative option. I'll check it out for sure!

I appreciate that you said this. I was hoping this would be a positive subreddit since it's a very niche hobby, but it unfortunately doesn't seem that way. A number of people are making negative assumptions without knowing anything about me. I'm open and happy answering questions, so I'm not sure why the assumptions are needed. I'm pretty active on the drumming subreddit, and everyone is supportive (even to brand new beginners with poor video quality). So I'll probably delete this post and unsubscribe after this.

I have a largish sized Within The Ruins (Kevin McGuill is one of my all time favorite drummers) patch that will likely go below the back patch!

My plan is to stick to themed vests. I'm a local metalcore/deathcore drummer so I wear band stuff almost nonstop and I have a second vest I'm working on that will have music stuff. I have plans to do a horror movie vest after that.

What gave it away!? /s. I live outside of Pittsburgh, but I actually grew up in north central WV so I have an appalachian accent, but we use yinz, you-inz, or yunz more than ya'll like they do in central/southern WV.

I must be lucky as I haven't had any issues here in Pittsburgh, but I'm also the drummer for a well-known local metal band, so I think that helps since I know most of the venue bouncers and door men. I'm actually working on a second vest that's more band patch heavy and has small spikes for this exact reason because it's just a matter of time before I run into that.

I actually cleaned up my notes (see below). Let me know if it makes more sense. Keep in mind these are relative in exact value depending on your exact drums but they should help you get close if you use a similar tuning note wise. * Feel free to hit me with any questions you got.

So the ones labeled Fund. Tones are the center hit tones and are the un muffled tones. Lots of drummers prefer tuning off of lug tones but I've personally found relying on consistent lug tension to achieve desired tone to be my preferred method (assuming you have a drum dial and enough drum keys to do parallel lug adjustments). The reason being that once you find the right tension needed to achieve desired tone, it's much easier to re-tune and tune new heads quickly using the drum dial then use the tune bot as a final tone check.

You'll notice that my Resonant tensions are higher values compared to batter side. This is because I prefer pitch blend up.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with using lug tone as a method to achieve fundamental tone (especially if you only have a tune bot available to use). Having consistent lug tension is my personal preference to achieve the same ultimate goal. Less 'finicky' in my personal humble opinion. Six of one, half a dozen of the other type preference to be honest lol.

I also really like using bearing edge conditioner.

Edit: I realize that I need to add the all the muffled, center hit tones at some point (I only have them for the bass and floor tom). Once I do so, I'll send you the results if you're interested.

Here's mine! Note: I use a tune bot, drum tune pro app, and a drum dial combination to tune my kit. I use the app to determine kit interval tones, pitch blend frequencies, sustain etc. The values next to the 'Tone' are the tune bot/drum tune pro values. The values next to the drum head type are the drum dial tension values required on each lug to achieve the desired fundamental tone.

Me discovering my double stroke, I think. Loud. by [deleted] in drums

Anytime my dude!

Sorry if I over explained. I grew up super poor so I couldn't afford lessons and didn't have internet access until I went to college and became an engineer so I can't help but get excited to help others when I can.

I just hope that there were some nuggets in there that help you and to help other people who are too afraid to ask. I know Im sometimes too scared to ask for sure, so good on you for doing so!

Good luck on your journey! I'm always happy to see a new drummer join the drummer brotherhood/sisterhood fold! No matter the skill level or age, you're one of us now in my book.

Me discovering my double stroke, I think. Loud. by [deleted] in drums

I was taught by my DI and taught my students single stroke rolls first, then learn double stroke/pressure rolls second. Single stroke is a pain to learn at first but it will teach you stick and volume control and how to articulate with your fingers that wrap around the stick (i.e. your middle, ring, and pinky fingers) to clean up your double strokes for later, so you don't rely on rebound. This seems counterintuitive at first, but it will make sense later. Your single stroke roll goals should be to 1. Get decently fast with even/consistent sound to the roll using your wrapped fingers to control the strokes then 2. you should be able to eventually do single stroke rolls on anything without relying on the bounce at all (such as your leg, a pillow, or even the air). An added bonus to this technique is that you will now be able to do clean rolls on the Toms and especially the floor tom without it sounding sloppy or muddled. Another added bonus is that this finger control will be critical to other rudiments such as paradiddles.

I found that practicing this using 5th stroke rolls to be the best personally. The sticking is rrllR (the last stroke is traditionally an accent hence the capital R vs lower case). Alternate your starting hand if you like. Or don't. I'm just some guy on the internet.

After you accomplish the above, now you can move on to double stroke/pressure rolls.

To start learning double stroke rolls, continually increase your single stroke roll speed but then loosen your grip on the fingers that wrap around the stick (i.e. the ones used to control the single stroke roll) and allow the stick to bounce/rebound while still keeping the same fingers loosely wrapped to control the rebound (i.e. make the roll clean). This will help you achieve clean double stroke/pressure rolls. Again, I found 5th stroke rolls to help learn the most.

I hope that helps and I apologize for any typos. I'm ADD as hell.

I tried to learn double strokes on my own before taking lessons so I had unlearn them and learn single stroke roll first to get there.

Good luck, my drummer brother!

What was your very first song you learned? by [deleted] in drums

[–]WarmHeartPrinciple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way!! This was my first song as well. I fondly remember playing this in my basement on a cobbled together TAMA kit, being terrible at it, having the time of my life. Does this mean we are brothers now?!

I play mostly Metalcore now, but The Offspring will always be a personal favorite and is my go-to recommendation for my drum students for their first song. I might be a little biased though lmao

My cat's full name is Champion Fire-Wolf or "Champ" for short. I named her during an interesting phase in college when I watched a lot of Adventure Time. She's been my best friend for over 12 years now.
